Friday scent of the day 9/19

Posted by Robin on 19 September 2014 160 Comments

Fendi Spring 2014 fashion campaign

Welcome to Friday! Our Friday community project this week: wear something discontinued. What did you pick?

As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you aren’t participating in the community project.

I'm wearing Fendi Theorema. My bottle is old, but Theorema has a good shelf life — it seems to smell better every year. Theorema is probably what I should have picked for the signature scent challenge.

Reminder: Next Friday, 26 September, will be Uncle Serge Day...wear something by Serge Lutens.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2014, where I'll try to always have the next six or seven weeks mapped out in advance.

As a heavy rain pours outside, I´m enjoying the spicy warmth of the original Uncle Karl perfume.

I chose Moschino Couture!, mainly because that is about the only discontinued scent I own. I really like it, but it isn’t really appropriate for warm weather, which we are having in East Texas – warm and humid. Luckily, this one is still available in mini sizes from discounters, and in larger sizes from Ebay. It will be perfect this winter.

Update: after a shower I picked Agent Provocateur l’Agent, which I’m pretty sure is recently discontinued — it’s no longer on their website and there seems to be ton at the discounters.

Oh, I’m sad to see this, it’s a favourite of mine. I hope AP isn’t giving up on its more unusual fragrances. I hadn’t picked a scent for today yet, so decided to join you 🙂 And I also decided to put a second backup bottle in my online cart for my next purchase, because it seems like the best plan!

It does seem likely you’re right based on the prices I see online :/ I find it weird that so many companies never acknowledge that they’ve discontinued perfumes. Just come out with it so we can panic accordingly!

I’m not sure, but I’d read it was being discontinued and I don’t see it anymore on L’Artisan’s website…. If it is actually gone then you might have more luck selling or swapping your bottle!

I got mine in a blind swap (meaning I hadn’t tried it–just realized that a “blind swap” sounds like some sort of Secret Santa thing) and was lucky. It seems to be a love-it-or-hate-it perfume. I think there’s a swap meet coming up–maybe you can trade it for something you love.

Old juice. It was my signature scent back in college, went through two large splash bottles before realizing it was discontinued.
I had to pay a ransom for a chipped 40% full bottle online, but sure glad I did.
Hope someday that I can test the new version.

My old favourite, Balenciaga Le Dix. Although it isn’t at its best in this unseasonably humid weather (with thunderstorms) that we are experiencing in southern England – it makes it disappear quickly and the violets don’t get a chance to shine. And I suppose it doesn’t go well with household chores. I am autumn cleaning …..

For my morning walk this morning I wore Caron Violette Precieuse, then for the rest of the day wore Acca Kappa Mimosa. This is the most realistic mimosa fragrance I’ve ever tried, and it’s a shame that it came and went so quietly.

Today’s community project made me remember my small ballshaped bottle of Alexander McQueen Kingdom. I always forget it since it needs to be stored in a box, not on a shelf. I like it a lot, getting lots of cumin, but not at all sweaty but dry and chalky.

Accidentally stepped into Sephora and they had a big scent sale (it is not to long since they established their first shop in Stockholm and they are still figuring out what is sellable) so I stepped out with 50 ml JHAG Miss Charming. To continue the rose scent discussion from yesterday: It is a fresh and slightly candied pink rose, very wearable.

    Have a great holiday everyone!

CSP Vanille Orange, which was either limited-edition or launched properly and then axed shortly thereafter. I can’t imagine why: it fit perfectly into their catalogue at the time and is cleverly constructed so that the orange note lasts for a very, very long time, which is rare indeed. Much less sweet and synthetic than Demeter Orange Cream Pop (i.e. Creamsicle) and very pleasant.

I hope you post the results of your birdwatching – I enjoy reading those so much. Right now we’re getting ready for fall migration, not much going on here, just a few hummingbirds on their way south and a pesky old Blue Jay frequently – and loudly – telling us to refill the peanut feeder, please!

      Hi Laila,

We went birding at Folsom Lake. Highlights include a Parasitic Jaeger (almost unprecedented in these parts; a fellow birder found it a few days ago), two Bald Eagles, and a Red-breasted Nuthatch (White-breasted Nuthatches are much more common around here). We were standing on a point above the lake where we always see tons of Acorn Woodpeckers (ACWO) . There were plenty of them today, but I don’t know how long they will remain at that spot because the only pine tree on the point has been cut down and the ACWOs seem to prefer to cache acorns in pine trees (soft wood). ACWOs have a lot of personality – they live in groups, look like clowns, and have hilarious calls. They had found another place to cache acorns – the hole left by a broken limb of an oak tree. They were making sorties to collect acorns, and when one would return, the others would start yelling and the one that landed with the acorn would hold its wings wide open for a few seconds before caching its acorn. Very entertaining behavior.

A hummingbird established a post in a tree near us from which it was fly-catching – flying out to catch insects mid-air and then returning to about the same spot. It’s so cool when you can see the tiny bill open when it’s chasing insects. The light was so bad (forest fires, sadly) and the bird was silent, so I couldn’t identify it – probably an Anna’s?

Other birds included: White–breasted Nuthatches, a Plain Titmouse, Mourning Doves, a Great Blue Heron, Turkey Vultures, grebes (too far away to identify beyond genus), a Great Egret, Brewer’s Blackbirds, Mallards, and Canada Geese. The only wild mammals we saw were Ground Squirrels – they have a lot of personality, and are fun to observe.

When we got home, there was perfume on my doorstep. Nice. It’s a small bottle of blood orange perfume (by Skeem) that I blind-bought after reading about it on EauMg. It was inexpensive, so if I don’t like it, I won’t feel too bad 🙂

Oh, thank you for the report. I’ll have to look some of those birds up, haven’t heard/seen some of them. And congrats on the new blood orange scent, another one of my favorite notes. I have Pacifica’s Blood Orange, which adds a bit of raspberry for extra juiciness. It’s a nice one and great for layering.

Sometimes with a vanilla or chocolate or another orange scent, sometimes to boost the blood orange note in Tocca Stella, which I love. Others I can’t think of right now; I also love it just on its own.

I don’t own a bottle, but I’m wearing my sample of Dior’s Mitzah on one arm (and L’Ambre des Merveilles on the other), as I heard a rumor that it was discontinued. Loving the warmth of both.

I am going to have to get my hands on a sample of Theorema – I feel like I have heard more people obsess about this one than any other.

    Have a lovely one, y’all.

Theorema is SUBLIME, and its many fans cannot understand how it could have been discontinued. It wasn’t quite like anything else on the market: there’s no substitute.

Maybe it’s best that you not get a sample, because then you will probably want a full bottle and it’s so hard to come by (although perhaps better to have tried it than not, I don’t know).

OTOH, I bought a mini bottle unsniffed back when those were still pretty cheaply available, and although I liked it and thought it was a genius lightweight oriental, I couldn’t get past the chocolate note in the base. Passed my mini on to someone who loved it. So it might be The One That Got Away, and it might not. Worth smelling, anyway.

Hmmm….yeah, I am not a fan of chocolate in fragrances. And combined with orange, that might turn me right off. Heh – I guess I just want to get in on all the fun.

Armani Prive Ambre Soie was also composed by Christine Nagel, after Theorema was discontinued, and it’s a very similar anisic amber. However, at $260 for 3.4 oz, it’s more expensive than some of the Theorema one can still find.

I had originally gotten a decant of Theorema, not knowing that it was discontinued at first. I always seem to promptly fall in love with the discontinued and kind of hoarded that decant. You can get a full bottle of Theorema through Beauty Encounter that is brand spanking new. The prices on eBay are to freaking scary.

I have Theorema and enjoy it very much but for me it’s a cold-weather scent. I bought it a long time ago because everyone was swooning over it on the Internet and I thought I would, too. I like it but I don’t find it swoonworthy despite possessing some of my favorite notes (I love chocolate/cocoa scent notes and orange is my favorite citrus), so don’t feel bad if you miss out on it. As someone who enjoys the ‘whole package’ (the scent, of course, but the bottle, backstory, etc. is important to me) I have to say the presentation box is one of the loveliest in my collection!)

IG is (was?) the only Guerlain I could wear. Most Guerlains turn nasty on my skin, but this one didn’t. I’m so sorry it came and went so quickly, before I could get more than a tiny sample. But I can imagine it wasn’t popular with the regular Guerlain fans for the same reason it WAS popular with me. It doesn’t seem like a Guerlain scent.

Fighting a cold with a teensy spray of Cuir de Lancôme pre-shower. It’s still too warm to wear this (90’s today) and even with my compromised nose it feels too cloying today. I’ll switch to my planned Ruffles (Oscar de la Renta) after my shower. I have a tiny mini parfum of this gem and really need to seek more out.

Eau de Fier is so strange and mesmerizing. It can’t have sold all that well, although I guess it got discontinued because birch-tar was banned as a perfume ingredient. Part of me is sorry I never got a bottle, but mostly I know I’d hardly ever wear it.

It was discontinued for both those reasons, or so I understood in one of the Paris Goutal boutiques a couple of years ago. I got my bottle in Paris in 2009. At that point they were only sold in the Goutal boutique on the Rue Castiglione. I’m very glad I did, even though I don’t wear it that often.

You could until a few years ago. I got my bottle in 2009. When I visited Paris again in 2012 it was no longer to be had. It’s one of my most treasured bottles ( and probably one of my most valuable ones)

I wish I could get Eau de Monsieur – it’s hard to tell from looking around if it’s been totally discontinued or not, or if it’s just available in Europe. It’s been gone from the US for a long time, but I saw a picture that made it look like it was available in the new packaging.

It is the new Eau de Monsieur. I haven’t tried that one yet and haven’t yet seen a review of both. The old one has that characteristic Goutal bitterness, and is wonderful. From this review I think that the new one is quite different.

Found a tiny bottle of Ecusson by Jean D’Albret tucked into an old jewelry box. There is still a small amount of the perfume in the bottle and it smelled good when I sniffend it, so I put a few dabs on. I’m sure the top notes are gone, but I do get a nice soft powdery, woody vanilla, with some light floral notes. Haven’t seen this out there anywhere, so I’m thinking that it was discontinued, and probably quite a while ago.

There’s an extra-toasty (and bad-smelling) place somewhere in the afterworld for people who wantonly discontinue gorgeous perfumes. (Or so I choose to believe!)

You can find 5-ml manufacturer’s minis of Rose Absolue on eBay if you poke around; for anyone who loves rose perfumes, this one is definitely worth hunting down.

Yes, I love the cinnamon note! It took me a few wearings to clue in to it (RA is very well blended), and then I couldn’t believe I’d missed it! And there’s none of the sour/soapy/synthetic vibe that a lot of rose fragrances have; the rose stays tangy and juicy from top to bottom.

Still enjoying it seven hours later!

Went for Guerlain Spiriteuse Double Vanille. So good.

I recently got a sample of the Diptyque Eau Duelle EDP, which is fairy similar at first sniff. Will try them side by side, maybe later tonight.

Vanilla (on the vanilla extract side of the vanilla spectrum, versus the cupcake frosting vanilla) is turning into a top 3 note for me.

Side note: the youngster sitting next to me on the bus broke out a container of what looked and smelled like homemade apple cinnamon oatmeal and proceeded to eat it.
    1. I am a total germophobe, and I have to give him props for not caring that he was eating on public transit.
    2. Now I want some oatmeal 🙂

    SOTD = Guerlain Iris Ganache

I considered L’AP Tea for Two but ultimately decided that since I enjoyed Iris Ganache yesterday, I might as well continue. I bought the second to the last bottle from the SFA flagship store January 2013. It was not on display anymore and I just asked the SA if there were any bottles left. Imagine my shock and delight when she brought out the box. Moral of the story – be bold and ask!

I really couldn’t figure out which of my disc fragrances to wear today. I almost picked Marielle Burani, but it’s very chilly here so that wouldn’t work – it makes me think of the summer. So I picked the original Badgley Mischka edp. Yummers! This is about as sweet and gourmand as I like to get. I don’t wear it very often, but it’s ended up being perfect for today.

I have so many d/c scents (and many of you are wearing them today!) that it was only a matter of mood and weather that determined my choice. It’s a gorgeous, warm and sunny day here for a change, first time opening the windows in a long while. SOTD is Theorema Leggero, a sheer and perhaps a bit more sparkling (more citrus in the top notes?) version of the original (the juice is a paler peach tone but the bottle is the same). the scent still identiable as Theorema. I’m enjoying it (and the day and everyone’s posts) very much.

I’ve had Theorema and Theorema Leggero so long I don’t remember whether I purchased them online or at TJ Maxx/Marshall’s. The Leggero is the edt version of Theorema’s edp and has a strong pepper note in the opening, but once it settles down it has that same luscious creamsicle-with-spice vibe of the mother scent; I don’t get any chocolate note in this. There’s also a summer version of Leggero (blue juice, aquatic, I’ve never smelled) and an Esprit d’Ete version, supposedly another summer version, more linear/fresh, but I’ve also never tried it. Hope that helps!

One of the first minis I found thrifting, which is what started me here in the first place. 60s-futuristic, super-wearable, clean but not “clean.” It will hopefully help me unobtrusively through difficult tasks today, and while not exactly cheerful or comforting, it isn’t as stern as many other scents from the time.

Pepper, agarwood (ahead of its time), florals, incense and musk. It is a powerhouse, and HUGE to my nose. It garnered a spontaneous compliment out in the soggy world, as I took my car into the shop 😀 Be well.

I applied Femme by Rochas ( I believe the company closed so everything is discontinued? I could be wrong ) the newer version with the cumin.
I may go see Maleficent in theatre tomorrow afternoon , perhaps Balmains Jolie Madame ( vintage) would be appropriate? Soft sweet violets( echoing the fields and woods and the purple in her robes) and leather ( dragons, warfare, strength ) and the name of the lead actress.

Well looking at Fragrantica apparently the ’90’s version is what I’m wearing and that’s been DCed for a new 2013 version that is apparently straight up cumin, based on the reviews. As there is a limited edition Eau for 2014 I’m not sure if they are still in business or not..

They still have a website up and a fashion line too,so I guess they are still a thriving business.

I wore Matthew Williamson incense, it was so wonderful… only about 10 mls left and then it will be gone forever.
