The pre-splitmeet poll, episode 2

Posted by Robin on 13 September 2014 48 Comments

Episode 2 of the splitmeet will be next weekend! Since the splitmeet takes a bit more "arranging" than the swapmeet, we're going to start off with a pre-splitmeet poll. There are three questions:

1. Does anyone object to raising the number of splits you can host from 2 to 3? Or are there any other rules we should revisit? (You can see the rules for episode 1 here.)

2. Are there any fragrances you wish someone else would split (in other words, you'd buy a share if someone else hosted)?

3. Are there any fragrances you'd love to split, but you'd like to find out if anyone is interested? (I would not necessarily be discouraged, by the way, if you don't get enough interest today...I think more people will tune in for the splitmeet itself next weekend).

I have a question: it’s been a long time since I stocked up on split supplies. I used to by from a few different vendors, like Perfumed Court and some frag shop that is now out of business. It’s been about 4 years since I stocked up, believe it or not. Are there any current, really reliable vendors out there for 5, 10 & 15 mls bottles, pipettes, etc? I know you can get price bargains on the bottles, but I want to make sure those bottles don’t leak, etc. Nothing ruins a swap faster than unreliable bottles! Thanks for tips, etc.

Accessories for Fragrances has very good quality decant bottles in various sizes. I have bought from them several times and have had no problems with their products. I do not recall having had one leak in my purse or allowing the perfume to evaporate as it sits in my decant drawer. I dealt with them through their ebay store (they operate under the name seattle_4), but I have now found their own website, where the prices appear to be lower, so I will order that way next time.

That’s where I order from — just got some new stuff from there this week. They ship fast and usually throw in a few extra supplies.

SKS Bottle has very good prices but you have to be willing to buy in higher volume – the 3, 4, 5 and 10 mLs come in packs of 48. I also use Accessories for fragrance. Also, when I am trying to get to a minimum amount to get a larger discount at Surrender to Chance, I would add a pack of pipettes or atomizers.

50 Roses, Elisa, hajusuuri, springpansy – thanks so much for the tips! I am sure that will be enough to get me going again. I’ve had a few of my large decants evaporate (boo, hoo, Shem el Nessim), and nearly a major leakage problem before shipping a few years ago. So I know not all the decanting bottles are created equal. Cheers!!!

One thing you can try to reduce evaporation if you have a bottle with a cap that does not seem to fit tightly enough is to wrap the threads on the bottle with Teflon tape (found in the plumbing supply section of the home improvement stores) before screwing the cap on. Two wraps around the neck of the bottle are enough. I work in a laboratory, and we use Teflon tape all the time when we need a leak-proof connection.

In addition, you can wrap the outside of the atomizer with Parafilm, around the part that screws on. I also use parafilm on my bottles that have stopper tops like the SL bell jars and Chanel parfums. Parafilm is like stretchy plastic; you can get this on eBay. A little bit goes a long way – 10 feet will last a long time.

50 Roses & Hajusuuri – thanks for the additional tips! I always use electricians tape when I ship, but I never thought about using extra films and tapes for storage. 😉

I know it’s been getting a lot of love on NST lately, and if anyone wants to host an Oeillet Bengale split, I’d go in on it.

Anyone interested in splitting a bell jar of Miel de Bois? It’s not a very popular one but I fell in love a year after it disappeared.

(I’m secretly dreaming that someone will feel inspired to buy the 500ml vat, which makes each ounce the price of the 0.33oz travel spray! …but, it’s hard to imagine who would might have both the resources and the inclination!)

I don’t have any objections to increasing the number of splits. The rules for the first splitmeet were reasonable.

I already have 2 splits planned (Atelier Cologne Sous le toit de Paris and Blanche Immortelle) and I a considering one more.

Anyone interested in splitting a Hermessence coffret? If there is more interest than availability (more than 3 interested), I can split 2 sets since I was planning on pruchasing the coffret at the mid-town NYC boutique and buying two sets is not more burdensome.

I would love to host a split but I honestly have no idea how to efficiently decant! I have used those one-way valve Travalo bottles when sharing scents with friends but I don’t think they make them larger than 5 ml. I don’t know how you get the perfume out of a spray bottle that doesn’t unscrew? I have a bottle from Sephora where you spray the scent but that seems like a good way to make a mess!!! Anyone have any tips?

Would two people be interested in splitting the 3 10ml Frederic Malle spray sets with me? I want En Passant but my second choice would be Iris Poudre. I got Carnal Flower in the last splitmeet and the 10 ml size is just perfect.
