Wednesday scent of the day 9/10

Posted by Robin on 10 September 2014 100 Comments

marshmallows

Do tell us your fragrance of the day!

I was in the mood for a little candy today, so I'm wearing Molinard Tendre Friandise.

Reminder: this Friday, 12 September, wear something green. The following Friday, 19 September, wear something discontinued.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2014, where I'll try to always have the next six or seven weeks mapped out in advance.

SOTD is Hermes Iris Ukiyoe. Continuing with my Iris theme. Didn’t have time this morning to search through my samples, and this one was out and available but it’s working for me. I don’t know why, but it seems powdery to me and I can’t figure out which note it is based on the description! Anyhow, an iris perfume yet again fits the slightly melancholy cool dampness of the summer to fall transition.

My dad used to do that at special extended-family dinners – ice cream in his coffee instead of milk and his usual two tablespoons of sugar. My mom (the black-coffee drinker) only let him get away with it on special occasions.

It’s raining again — what the heck, Denver?! I can still smell a bit of my LADDM from last night, so I’m continuing the smoky amber theme with a bit of Fireside Intense.

No kidding! This isn’t the Denver I signed up for when I moved here years ago. There has been more rain this year than I can ever remember, and I’m told that’s the harbinger of a very snowy winter. Yikes!

A blind grab into the untried samples box yielded Comme de Garcons X Undercover: Holygrapie. My this is a limp little scent, so unlike the CdG I’ve come to know. You can definitely get the grape, but it’s timid, as is the entire scent. When it limps off into perfume eternity, I’ll be putting on something else with a bit more character. I’ve got a Carthusia Mediterraneo sample in my handbag. That might be just the ticket to brighten up a gray day.

An Oregonian is truly a trustworthy source for a scent recommendation for a grey day! I did go ahead and put on the Mediterraneo and this I really like. I’m going to have to give it a full-day try real soon.

Yikes! At least we have a Subaru now — we went through the last snowy winter with a really terrible car for snow (an old Lexus with rear-wheel drive). And even with all this rain, it’s still a lot less rainy than Boston, where I moved from.

Good Morning All! My SOTD is my absolute, favorite perfume; Nectarine Blossom and Honey by Jo Malone. I have always been a perfume-lover, but this is the scent that created the monster in me. Maybe, Robin, this could be a “theme” or “topic” one day: What was the fragrance that created the “monster” in you?

SOTD Putain des Palaces by ELdO, which has been mentioned recently in the comments and prompted me to give it some love.

A little warm (read: hotter than Hades) here right now, so the sweetness is a tad bit cloying.

This wears much better in cooler weather but I’m going to stick with it and see if it suffocates me 😉

I like that one. It’s a lot like Juliet Has a Gun Citizen Queen, to my nose, but I prefer CQ (a little less powder, a little less sweet, a little more leather). Thought: I should do a side-by-side comparison.

I haven’t tried any of the JHAG fragrances but Citizen Queen sounds good! I love leather! Is it predominantly a floral with a little leather in the dry down? Or more leather focused with a bit of floral action on the side?

Predominantly, I say, a musk with floral and leather, and a powdery/suede drydown. Opens up with a very quick hit of aldehydes, so if you don’t like those you might very well prefer Hotel Slut (which is what I like to call Putain des Palaces).

Testing new sample of Andy’s Sotto La Luna Gardenia. It is definitely a Tauer… and reminds me to some degree of Serge’s Une Voix Noire, which I didn’t enjoy as much as this. Should get the UVN decant out and test them side-by-side, as the gourmandish, ripe white floral is similar. What I remember from UVN was a boozy-smoky ash quality that put me right off it, though. I’m finding SLL much easier to wear.

I’ve got a sample and I still need to try it on skin. On paper, the top notes were bizarre – like cherry bubblegum. But the drydown was an interesting soapy white floral. Very curious to see how it acts on skin.

The SLL? Hmm… top notes are well gone now, might have to go back and look for cherry bubble gum.

I’m not getting soap, thank goodness. I kind of hate that. It’s definitely a Tauer, definitely related on some kind of tangent to both Une Rose Vermeille (the gourmandy stuff) and TdP Loretta (the tuberose/ambergris, without the dark fruits and that Caterpillar-hookah hallucinogenic patchouli).

(But seriously, thank you for the comments on SLL. I am always on the hunt for a gorgeous gardenia or jasmine to try, and I love a hit of bubblegum in a floral fragrance.)

Today, I’m testing out my sample of Vol de Nuit parfum in its modern incarnation. This is pleasant and conjures up images of an autumn forest and a gently-lit cabin, but it’s almost certainly NOT “me.” Occasionally after I first put it on, I got inexplicable hints of almond which were overtaken by greenery until eventually all of it but the faintest hints of the [very lovely!] drydown disappeared completely. I’m not too disappointed, though. The bottle itself is beautiful, but much too expensive, so I’m happy not to feel compelled to purchase one. Here’s hoping that I don’t decide in a week that I love it!

Sexy Angelic is very pretty and lasts about 5 minutes, if that. Super light. Lighter than, say, Orange Flower Water or Rose, Water. I’m generally not anosmic to musks, so there could be a musc of some sort that I’m not smelling. I can send you some if you like.

Last night I indulged in L’Air de Rien for bed, and confirmed, once again, that it is one of my desert island, top 5 scents. Some of it lasted until today and I am happily huffing at my wrist some more…

Now I’ve moved on to Daim Blond on my left arm and Nuit de Cellophane on my right. Covering all the bases here today.

Test drove some Chanel 19 vintage parfum last night to see if I could wear it Friday for the green community project. What a GORGEOUS perfume that one is, so layered and rich. It’s spicy, green, smokey, leathery, powdery, a tad floral, it’s got it all. I used to have the original 19 (with the good Galbanum) when I was in college and all of my silver jewelry smelled like it. I’m going to an opening on Friday (one of my paintings is in a show) and wanted to see if it would be the right thing to wear.
Today I have clients so no perfume for boo boo till later. Then I will break out the Jacomo 8!

I love those marshmallows! Great colors! One of my favorite foods, or I should say sweets..

I could not help myself today and decided to do a full day of Aedes de Venustas’ Oeillet Bengale. The temp is dropping a bit and so I thought this was the right day to go for it.
I’ll be moving this from a dabber to a spray as well as I think I need to get a better dose of it so that they scent stays with me better. Overall it’s a beautiful spicy rose/carnation..

    Perfect for a coolish day.

I’m not sure what green fragrance to wear. I’ll be off on Friday (woo hoo) and will be at an all day event with people who may be in the close to filthy rich category (i’m not even close, in case you’re wondering).

    Are these considered green ?

I’m thinking that No. 19 would fit in beautifully with “close to filthy rich.”

Haven’t smelled the Wood Sage, but you could maybe make a case for B’berry and Bay being green. It’s a rustic sort of green, I think, sort of an LL Bean fragrance.

Ha! I thought you were stinkin rich! The really rich people are so rich that you don’t even know it, so I like your idea to wear understated Jo Malone. (or wear some dandelions behind your ears, then everyone will think you’re sooooooo rich).

Not that I want to look or smell rich. I am just “Joe average” or the woman’s equivalent of that expression 🙂

        Where would one find dandelions?

I was *going* to say, On the lawn of one’s summer home in the Hamptons… however, anyone owning a summer home in the Hamptons would certainly have a gardener, or at the least a lawn boy, to take care of those weeds.

Those marshmallows are almost too beautiful to eat! SOTD is AA Herba Fresca. Probably my favorite summer fragrance. I’ve been wearing lots of samples lately so it was nice to get back to an old friend.

I wore Herba Fresca a lot this summer as well – such an easy fragrance to wear. I have a feeling I will use it in the winter as a nice pick-me-up as well!

My SOTD is No. 5 Eau Premiere. It’s one of those that has really grown on me and is now on my FB list. I keep putting it on every time I go to the mall. At first I felt kind of indifferent, but now I feel like it is so nicely constructed and easy-to-wear, all the while making me feel elegant. It’s just like a perfect cashmere sweater. Comforting and sophisticated at the same time.

I had a similar experience with SL Clair de Musc. I received a sample of it with a purchase, tried it, and just felt kind of, “Meh.” But I find myself reaching for it constantly, and even though it is simple it is absolutely stunning. Another go-to cashmere sweater scent. It will probably now be my next FB from Serge Lutens. It’s so funny how that happens, and it actually does, to my nose, share some similarities with Eau Premiere. Maybe I have a type?

I can’t wait for Friday! I’m going to wear my vintage Ivoire. So verdant, with a lovely jasmine dry-down!

Wearing Chanel Coco EDP today. Coco was my SS in the 80s and early 90s, and I still love it!

Your post reminds me of Ananas Fizz, that has a super sparkly pineapple smell. I was given a small decant during one of the swaps and used it up over the summer. Unhappily when I went to get a bottle, found out it was discontinued. I will have to try Angel Innocent.

This evening I’m cheating on my No. 5 and sampling Tobacco Rose from Papillon Artisan Perfumes. I couldn’t resist sniffing when it came in my Luckyscent order and then I couldn’t resist trying a bit. Gorgeous so far. Took a whiff of Anubis in the tube too and will have to wait for much cooler weather for that baby.

Papillon is the first new niche brand to interest me for a very long time! Do report back when you get to try the other(s) 🙂
