Friday scent of the day 8/22

Posted by Robin on 22 August 2014 126 Comments

beach, Bali Indonesia

TGIF! Today's community project: wear something beachy, or anything you think of as "a vacation in a bottle". What did you pick?

As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you didn’t participate in the community project.

I'm wearing Kai over a very light layer of Estee Lauder Bronze Goddess Whipped Body Creme. It's a perfect antidote to the very crappy, not-beachy weather we're having here today.

Reminder: Next Friday, the 29th, wear the last fragrance you bought.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2014, where I'll try to always have the next six or seven weeks mapped out in advance.

For our community project this Friday I picked Van Cleef & Arpels California Reverie.
It feels very summery and sutable for a beach or sightseeing of the Mediterranean coast.

Good choice. I have to retry this from a sample in a glass vial or atomizer because I smelled something plasticky from my sample which was in a plastic screw top bottle. Excluding that plastic note, it is a very nice perfume.

I almost wore Kai, but it was a little chilly and cloudy this morning so I went with Sweet Redemption instead.

For the “last fragrance you bought” SOTD, are you thinking last full bottle purchase or last any amount (decants/samples)?

With the name Beach, I simply cannot ignore my bottle of Bobbi Brown.
In fact, I actually layered and used the whole series for today starting with the body wash, body scrub, body lotion then finally the fragrance itself! 😛

This is the only real beach-y scent I like, but I’m still trying to make up my mind whether I like it enough to buy a bottle. I’m trying to avoid the equation that since I don’t have a perfume of a certain sort and do come across one I quite like, that I necessarily like it enough to buy…

I think I need to try a little of the lotion with the perfume over.

I am cheating, I forgot about the community project this morning when I was choosing my SOTD. I’m wearing Onda EDP, but it *does* remind me of a vacation we took a couple of years ago on the river Kolpa in Slovenia (where I live). It smells like the river bank’s vegetation, driftwood and earth and even a couple of sheep in the distance.

I was planning to wear CSP Aqua Motu, which smells like the rocky Atlantic seaweed-and-shale beaches of my childhood in Newfoundland, but it seemed too bleak for such a nice day, so I switched to Guerlain Terracotta Voile d’Ete, which is the closest thing I have to a sunny sandy beach smell. Carnations and vanilla and ylang: perfect.

Manoumalia is a great choice, lush and heady. I took my tiny sample with me on a trip to Hawaii once, and it was one of the scents that seemed most at home there. I always associate it with Maui now.

I’m wearing the wonderful but sadly discontinued Artisan Vanilia. It doesn’t suit the weather at all, as it is gray, cool and rainy in Holland. I love how uplifting this perfume is. It also has one of the funniest reviews in The Guide.

I love love love Vanilia, but it never struck me as vulgar (now Gucci Rush, another Turin darling — that’s got vulgarity enough for two). I always thought of it as the most well-rounded vanilla in my collection: like the whole life cycle of vanilla, the bean itself plus the orchid whence it sprang.

      • austenfan says:

I don’t find it vulgar either, but I still love that review.
It’s probably my favourite vanilla and I own a few.
I haven’t smelled Rush in a long time, so I can’t comment on it’s vulgarity. I find the Comptoir Sud Pacifique vanillas very loud and vulgar, but enjoyable every now and again.

    Miller Harris Fleurs de Sel

All week I had planned to wear Bronze Goddess today, but when it came time for fragrance this morning, I really felt like wearing Fleurs de Sel instead. FdS is beachy, to my nose, but clearly not the tropical beach of Bronze Goddess.

Me too! FdS is beach maybe on the Atlantic coast on a cool day, wearing a sweater. It’s pretty similar to VCA Evening in Paris; one is heard to find and not cheap and the other is discontinued.

FdS is fascinating. I put it on last night as a test run for today’s challenge. I agree that I reads more coastal than beachy to me. Windswept coast. This morning my skin just smelled faintly salty. Neat trick, Mr. Perfumer! You both smell great.

this is a summer on the Mediterranean coast (not a tropical sandy beach)
    unusual and very evocative

I’m not a fan of coconut but this one is nice paired with lime. Whenever I pass by a Creed counter, this is the one I ask to smell again, and again, especially at Saks where the SAs are typically unhelpful and stingy and when I’m in the mood, I make them work.

Day 5 of Amouage week and I’m wearing Journey (w). It was challenging to find something in the line that reads “beachy” to me. With it’s apricot opening and notes of jasmine green tea, this one is really easy going and relaxed compared to most in the line and the name invokes vacations and travels. It’s a nice scent and I’ll be sad when my decant runs out.

Sure wish they made 20/30 ml bottles in the Amouage line – that would be the perfect size!

Had a toss-up between Neela Vermeire Ashoka and Elie Saab L’eau couture (in the green bottle). The Elie Saab won out, mostly because I am trying to get a feel for whether I want to get a bottle of it. I mostly get green almond out of it, a little bitter at first. Soft and subtle after that.

Had a brief sampling at Neiman Marcus. The SA was a Bvlgari rep, relentlessly plugging the line. They didn’t have Rosa Nobile. Took carded samples of the newest Bvlgaris (meh), the new Maison FK (not for me, based on paper), and I spritzed Creed Iris Tubereuse, which I like! Have never liked a Creed before. And hey, tuberose definitely exudes beachy.

I have Bobbi Brown Beach on one arm, and EL Sensuous Nude on the other. I’ve been craving something beachy lately, possibly because our summer has been rather cool. I wish Bronze Goddess were still sitting around in the stores; I would like to give it another go. It somehow didn’t suit when I tried it earlier this year, but it seems like my preferences swing in new directions all the time.

I’m wearing Phylosikos which reminds me of muy grandfather’s house garden In Mar del Plata (seaside beach resort town here in Argentina)
I spent almost all the summers of my youth there. The green aspect of this frag reminds me of lazy afternoons in the grass under some tree 🙂

I didn’t do today’s assignment, but I’m wearing Chamade — not one I reach for or think of often, but it’s smelling really great today.

When I think of vacation in a bottle, one of my favorites used to be CSP Aqua Motu.

For along time it was all about the salty scents, but now all I crave is coconut and fruit, so I’m wearing Olivine Atelier Amongst the Waves and a bit of Yosh Zuma. I think it’s because the summer feels like it’s almost over here in the NYC area. It was an unusually cooler August- not that I’m complaining!

I picked Tokyo Milk’s Sea and Sky. It’s not a suntan beachy scent, more of a walked out of the ocean and can still smell it on the skin kind of scent

I chose PdN’s Musc Monoi today, and it smells perfectly of suntan oil, tropical flowers and sun warmed skin. It reminds me of Diptyque’s Voile Satin oil’s scent, and makes me want to pull that out and compare the two. Hmmm, where is that little vial? ;D Their number is legion!

My ultimiae vacation in a bottle is Un Jardin en Mediterranee by Hermes
But today I was wearing Dzing! – bought it unsniffed – I mean I tested it a whilw back on paper and I liked it, but since this fragrance became unavailable where I live I just ordered it on-line without ever testing it on skin.
I have mixed feelings about it – it’s oroginal and nice but I’m not sure that this one is quite me… When it comes to leather nothing beets Chanel Cuir de Russi for me.

I’m fond of Dzing! and appreciate that it’s a bit lighter than all my other leathers. I can easily wear it most of the year, when the others would be too heavy.

I like Cuir de Russie, too, of course.

I went with probably the most literally beachy thing I have, Tokyo Milk Marine Sel. And then I added a drop of Lush Sikkim Girls to make it a little more tropical.

Azuree Soleil – tiare/gardenia, coconut and an amber/wood base.
    Nice, very ‘beachy’.
Looking at the packaging I had to laugh that TOM FORD negotiated (I assume) that his name is in a bolder, thicker font than Estee Lauder. I’m not a TF hater, but OH! the EGO on that man!!! 😉 LOL

I’m sipping a margarita on a beach somewhere in the Mexican Riviera – perhaps Puerta Vallarta? The salty taste of the rim of the glass dipped in lime juice is a delightful prelude to the crisp, dry, thirst-quenching deliciousness of the drink itself. The cool, clear water chills my toes and washes away the grains of sand I so blissfully squished a few moments ago. The gentle lap, lap, lap of the water as it reaches the sandy shore soothes my spirit and gentles my soul. My SOTD combo – Tommy Bahama Set Sail St. Bart (tequila, lime, floral notes, white sand, musk and guaiacwood) layered over BBW’s Coconut Lime Verbena body lotion – take me to this blissful place!

My favorite beachy, vacation-in-a-bottle scent is EL’s Azuree Soleil Skinscent Eau Fraiche, but it’s been so wet and sodden and overwhelmingly humid here the last few days I didn’t want anything warm and creamy and suntan-lotionny. I wanted cool, crisp, dry, refreshing, and salty, and that’s what I found today in SSSB/CLV.

Very fond of Kai – great choice!

I was planning to wear AG Eau du Sud, which is usually perfect for late August and which I assume relates to vacations in Provence. However, it has been heinously humid here and I’m not yet in an Eau du Sud frame of mind and sort of forgot about the poll. Instead I randomly picked up Miller Harris La Fumée. It smells nice but has very little longevity, which was OK since I was going to a museum and didn’t really want sillage anyway.

On the way home, I passed a L’Occitane shop and spritzed on some Roses et Reines Eau de Toilette. It’s a simple rose scent that smelled good for a couple hours but has since faded.

I might wear Guerlain Idylle Eau Sublime to bed. It’s my favorite dewy rose scent. Maybe not particularly beach or vacation choices, but certainly untaxing summer scents.

It was very humid and warm today with the promise (yet no delivery) of rain, so I wanted something soft and romantic this morning. I picked Sonoma Scent Studio Lieu de Reves. While a sunrise beach picnic isn’t in my immediate future, I could smell my wrist and daydream about one. Later in the afternoon after a lovely and refreshing shower, I put on some vintage CSP Tiare. It is pretty and not too overwhelming. Rather like a lighter Montale Intense Tiare. It will probably carry me through to bedtime and maybe even until another projected hot morning.

I really love these scent of the day posts, especially the community ones, and have fun throughout the week planning and trying to decide what I’ll wear. Nope. No OCD here. 😉

I was planning to wear Sage Onyx (coconut and not-too-sweet vanilla, and I even got a compliment on it recently), but at the last minute I went with Carthusia Ligea ‘La Sirena’ instead. Something about it reminds me of childhood vacations, riding in the car with my aunt or uncle with the windows down, wearing bright colors and big sunglasses.

I ended up wearing Lanvin Orange Ambre . It’s citrusy, and pleasant and that’s necessary when the A/C s air compressor isn’t working at my workplace. And the local schools temp reading on the sign said 102 degrees F . Plus Humidity . Ugh!
The BBW Coconut Lime Verbena sounds nice for today. May root out the lotion and see if layering it helps longevity issues. Though if I mist my hair it’ll stick around until shampooed again.

As an enthusiast of ocean and beachy scents, I just had to chime in. The most fabulous, evocative scent that sticks in my mind is Summer Vacation by Yankee Candle. Wish they would bottle it! Still miss Ocean Dream by Giorgio of Beverly Hills.
