Wednesday scent of the day 8/20

Posted by Robin on 20 August 2014 74 Comments

Acqua di Parma Iris Nobile collector bottle, 2013

Do tell us your fragrance of the day!

I'm wearing Acqua di Parma Iris Nobile Eau de Toilette. It's sadly been discontinued in favor of the very different Eau de Parfum. I think I'm nearly the only person who liked the Eau de Toilette better.

Reminder: this Friday, August 22, wear something beachy, or anything you think of as "a vacation in a bottle". The following Friday, the 29th, wear the last fragrance you bought.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2014, where I'll try to always have the next six or seven weeks mapped out in advance.

Good morning everyone. SOTD is Timbuktu + Rose Anonyme.

Yesterday I tried Timbuktu and it reminded me pretty strongly of Atelier Cologne’s Rose Anonyme which I tried last month. I didn’t care much for RA at the time. I thought it smelled like syrupy play dough. Timbuktu, however, I loved. I decided to wear both fragrances today with one on each wrist. Normally when I do these side by side tests I find that the two fragrances that I thought would smell nearly identical could not be more different.

Well, in this case I can definitely see how Timbuktu made me think of RA. They both have the same smoky sweetness (benzoin + incense?). However, as usual, the differences turned out to be much more substantial. Yesterday, It almost felt like RA was a closet flanker to Timbuktu (Timbuktu Extreme de Rose perhaps? How about Timbukt’Oud?) but side by side they are clearly very different things. Personally, I find Timbuktu much more wearable. In fact, I don’t think I see myself wearing RA again. Even so, wearing RA next to Timbuktu has somehow raised my opinion of it. If nothing more, I no longer think it smells like syrupy pay dough. As for Timbuktu, I love it and I definitely see a full bottle in my future.

Mito EDP which is one of the samples I acquired when I was at Scent Bar this weekend. My budget cowers at the thought that I might become a Vero Kern fangirl. I bought Rozy EDP and want the Rozy voile d’ extrait. I also sampled the Onda voile when I was in the store and might need that too. I see a sample order coming on….

I didn’t realise the edt had been discontinued..

Today I’m wearing Amouage Memoir woman. I have to be in the mood for it but the drydown is one the best imo. Strange though- I sprayed from my bottle this morning and this evening topped up with a decant sent to me. It’s the first time I’ve used the decant and it seems to not have that initial herbal/spicy weird part- it’s much smoother. I wonder why the difference?

On another note: Robin I had a dream about your poll question the other day! Lol.
We had a poll telling how we all got here, in perfume-blog-land. Was it long lost perfume we were googling? (if so, what?) Or trying to find out more about a new perfume love etc? I’d love to know how we all ended up here!

Yep, gone. They do still make the Iris Nobile Sublime or whatever it was.

A decant is likely to have at least some degradation of the top notes, even if it’s only minor, just by virtue of having been sprayed out of the original bottle.

and that’s so funny! We did a poll like that once, but might have been a long time ago, I’ll check.

Memoir, I do really love it. It was sort of a stealth love, too – I was trying to figure it out and kept wearing it until I started craving it. (Too hot/humid for it here in the summer, though. It would likely kill me.)

Death by Memoir is a very real possibility. Wrong weather, bit of a headache… many ways to die…

Memoir is great! I had a traveler friend mule it back via Dubai duty free. Some great deals there! Like Mals, it’s way too hot and humid for me to wear Memoir at the moment, but maybe later this evening I’ll add a tiny spritz for bedtime.

Rained this morning (again), and now it’s muggy, so wearing my decant of Dior J’Adore L’Absolu, which doesn’t have that steely cast that the current version of j’Adore seems to have now. Pretty flowers.

Still trying to use up decants. I estimate I’ll have that done in about, oh, 2023. Around the time my youngest should finish college… assuming I don’t buy any more. Eep.

SOTD is Floris Jasmine. I am trying to go through my jasmine samples, now that I have found the best jasmine perfumes (for me, they are SL a la Nuit, SL Sarrasins, and Creed Jasmal). No point in hoarding them, but I like most of them enough to wear.

Once this wears off, I will apply a la nuit. I bought a FB of a la Nuit, and have plans to buy a FB of Sarrasins and Jamsal someday. But, Jasmal is discontinued, which makes me sad 🙁

Day 3 of Amouage week brings me to Beloved. I really need to stop hoarding my decant and use the dang thing up…ala Mals! It’ll go on FBW list and eventually I’ll get a bottle I suppose.

How do y’all prioritize your lists? I usually end up spending when I see a discount bottle or a discontinued notice or have a discount code of some sort… even if said bottle isn’t high on the list. Sigh. I should sort and rank the bottles I want and then buy them it that order.

I’ve gotten better at not impulse purchasing discount bottles lately, but far from perfect!

How much do I think about a scent? How fast does it go on my to-buy list after I try it? Can I afford it? Is it so amazing that I’ll save for it? No real priority order since I have dozens on the list, some of which have hung out there for years and I can be easily distracted by something new and amazing

I’m buying less FBs because I enjoy wearing a different scent each day and I like many scents. A decant – even smaller 10-15mls – lasts a long time for me. Plus, there are always new scents to try and those samples need to be used up.

If I see a FB of a scent I REALLY love on sale I might purchase.

Discontinued scents are an issue, but I find many you can still purchase and they’re just fine.

It is possible to use up one’s samples? I have hundreds–I could go at least a year and not repeat, not to mention that I keep acquiring more plus there’s all those full bottles to use….

It’s cold and rainy here, so I’m wearing Paco Rabanne’s La Nuit. Luca Turin apparently described it as ‘Tabu sprayed on a horse”, but to me it smells of wax, roses, civet and honey. Something about the wax-smutty honey combo says sex in church to me. Very ‘like a prayer’. I wear only a tiny dab, it’s very strong.

I’m going to the beach Friday and am going to douse myself in either Kareem Abdul Egyptian Musk Oil (musk this light makes me think of the beach), Jennifer Aniston (I know, I know, but it’s beachy), Bobbi Brown Beach (obvious choice) or Child. Which do I pick?

Tough choice. In the absence of any real direction, I at times opt for the “write options on slips of paper, toss in a hat, then choose one” method. Often, I end up pulling several slips out, because it will reveal my true feelings.

You ARE the only one who likes that EdT better. 😉 Seriously, though, I prefer the EdP, but they are very different scents. The EdP kind of reminds me of the more recent Cartier La Panthère, which I *didn’t* like particularly, not sure why, and I can see how the rather insistent “glow” of either of them could bother someone. Not as cheerful as the EdT…

It Is rather lovely in a delicate way and reminds me of many old memories of the smell of country roses maybe mixed with a cream in my grandparents house. I will try it more and see how it goes but definitely different to a number of rose scents I thought – I often appreciate but don’t actually wear them.

Inspired by relleric’s yesterday wearing, I dug my Mugler B*Men out of its shoebox purgatory this morning and sprayed it on with some abandon. And it’s so so great! Spicy rhubarb, licorice, wood, sweet but not overly so. Its weirdness is perfectly calibrated. I can’t imagine why it was discontinued.

This is sunshine in a bottle. I have the 50 mL bottle which is so cute and just perfect to hold and spray. I find the 100 mL bottles too big for my hands to comfortably spray. I have not thought about what to wear on beachy Friday and this may just fit the bill!

Another very warm and humid day here, but the sun came out, making it one of the last ‘swim’ days. Post pool, I showered and conditioned with various monoi products and finished with a couple of spritzes of YR’s Eau des Vahines, taking me to a tropical paradise instead of yesterday’s Amazonian jungle. Where will I be tomorrow? Hmmm . . . .
