Tuesday scent of the day 8/5

Posted by Robin on 5 August 2014 140 Comments

Cartier Marcello

Do tell us your scent of the day!

I'm wearing Eau de Cartier Zeste de Soleil and pretending it doesn't already feel like fall outside.

Reminder: this Friday, August 8, we're doing citrus — wear your favorite citrus fragrance. The following Friday, August 15, wear something by Guerlain.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2014, where I'll try to always have the next six or seven weeks mapped out in advance.

Shown is Cartier's Marcello handbag, $1880.

I finally tried this last week and wowza! breakfast indeed.
Too much for me, but I do love that coffee note…
What’s it like after a few hours?

A little more subtle, but it’s pretty linear to my nose. I get a lot of lavender and maple syrup more than coffee … fun every now and then. 🙂

My SOTD it Stila Creme Bouquet. It’s back in production, so I’d better purchase a back-up. It seemed to have a devoted following, so I don’t understand why they discontinued it before.

It does not smell soapy, but I can imagine a fancy soap having this fragrance. Notes: lilac, lily of the valley, and vanilla. It’s old-fashioed in the best possible way 🙂

Stila was in trouble financially for awhile, right? Are they back on solid ground? (I used to buy lots of their eyeshadows but almost never buy makeup anymore)

I did not know that they had had rough times. That could explain cutting back on production. Well, hopefully this means that they are doing better.

I don’t wear makeup, and I’m allergic to most lotions and potions, so I tend to have a narrow focus when it comes to the offerings of “beauty” companies 🙂

Estee Lauder sold them off in 2006. Then there were reports they were going bankrupt back in 2009, but I think they were sold again after that…they’ve changed hands a number of times.

I like Stila makeup a lot but I didn’t know they ever had a perfume.

FYI Nordstrom Rack is a good place to find discounted Stila palates, eyeliners etc.

I just saw that Frederic Malle makes scented body butter – has anyone tried it? Is it worth the price? My current body butter splurge is the Josie Maran whipped argan oil. It is so smooth and silky and I think that the apricot vanilla scent layers nicely with any leather fragrance (so far I have tried Chanel Cuir de Russie and Cuir de Lancome). I would love to try the Iris Poudre scented body butter, but WOW is it expensive!

2 years ago I bought body butter in Carnal Flower. I use it VERY sparingly (only on my arms) and it’s heavily scented, so when I used the butter, there’s no need for the edp on top. People would keel over from the fumes when I walked in a room if I did that! Oddly, the most consistent compliment I get when I wear CF is along the lines of “Oooh, you smell like soap. Expensive soap.” Strange.

All of the Malle body butters that I’ve tried (Carnal Flower, Portrait of a Lady, Lys Med) have been strongly scented and very rich. Haven’t tried the Iris Poudre, though (I love IP, I think it might be my favorite of the Malles).

Good to know that they are heavily scented and rich. I am normally a heavy slather-er, but knowing that only a bit is needed makes this high price less of a barrier 🙂

Nothing yet but just to say, I really enjoy Zeste de Soleil! Didn’t think I really needed such a scent, but every time I’ve tested it, it’s been a lot of fun…and I’m now seeing how deeply discounted it is! (6.7oz for $48!? I could bathe in it!)

    Hm! 🙂

I know, it’s totally ridiculous. The problem is the Costco-style pricing–100ml for $42…or twice as much for just six bucks more! Neither of those makes any sense! Although, if I bought the big one, then I could send you and 18 more of my closest friends 10mls each! Hahaha. Oy.

Yvresse today and it was perfect for another spring-like day here.
Tonight I was starting to swap my dressing table rotation and sprayed on Vanille Absolument before it went to the motherload in the spare room. It was swapped with Seville a l’aube.

      Hi perthgirl,
In case you remember our conversation from last week on how to spot an original Trussardi by Trussardi, please forget it now. I followed my strategy to get a backup bottle from eBay and that was not good. Apparently, they also heavily (and badly!) reformulated the stuff that has almost identical packaging. I was able to return the bottle, and am now even more impressed by those who have the patience to collect vintage fragrances.

        Hi Morgana
That sounds like a disappointing exercise 🙁 what a shame it’s been so savaged by reformulation. I guess I’ll just let it go, but I do hope you find a vintage at a good price 🙂

      Just curious, Ferre what? 🙂

The company’s naming strategy was pretty repetitive, I think… hard to tell what you’ve got just from the name. I have a bottle of Ferre 20 (aldehydic floral with that berry musk) that I bought on a vacation to Rome, and I like it very much.

      Hope work is going well.

Work is actually fine, thanks! It’s Ferre for Women I believe (2005?), in the rectangular bottle. Yes, they could have done better with the naming…

Mals have you tried this Ferre? It’s also by Pierre Bourdon, and The Guide review says it’s his more polished follow-up to Iris Poudre. As an iris-centric aldehydic floral I thought it’d be right up your alley! 🙂 (and it’s cheap!)
I just realize I sound like a used car salesman but I love this stuff 🙂

I *have* tried it, yes! And it is very nice, and considerably cheaper than Iris Poudre… and yet I did not love it. It was missing that fluffy thing in the drydown that I love all to little bits.

Today is my birthday so I’m wearing a favorite: Fate!

My dog has promised me a bottle of something, but can’t decide what. He’s very indecisive sometimes! I’ve suggested Beloved but it’s a bit pricey, so maybe he’ll have to decide between Rose Cut and Fille de Berlin instead. Has anyone done a side by side comparison of the two? I’ve sampled (and loved) both but which one???

SOTD is nada. My baby is due on Saturday and my sense of smell has gone through the roof again. I thought having the nose of a bloodhound would be fun. Instead I can smell every single nuance in the house magnified to 100. I will be so happy to get my old sniffer back.

I was thinking the same – pretty soon that’s the only smell you care about. My daughter’s head smelled like powdery, nutty iris root for the longest time.

          Did you wash her hair?
I’ve always thought that Johnson Baby Shampoo and Channel No. 5 smell similar.
(Please do not kill me. It is entirely possible that the shampoo people copied Channel).

Gosh, well yes, the baby shampoo does have a lot of aldehydes, and I smell a lot of old fashioned soaps that could be a faded part of the Chanel no 5 line. Actually, I always thought that the “pink” J & J body wash smells like watered down rose/alde combo in Chanel No 22. And yes, I did wash her hair. Just like any of us, the smell of shampoo subsides and then we smell like ourselves. I only washed her hair every once in a while. Babies don’t really need to have their hair washed all the time. There is no killing, lol, we all smell things differently. 🙂

Agreed, baby head smell for the win! Now that my child no longer has baby head smell, I have to make do with friends’ kids. And the occasional tolerant stranger who will let me coo at and sniff their baby.

I’m teaching the annual Harassment Prevention course this afternoon, so I needed a strong ‘don’t mess with me’ scent to stay in theme.

Since I’ve always envisioned JHAG’s Lady Vengeance as a purrrrfect scent for a villainess, and most villainesses are portrayed as strong women, I chose it today.

A chilly and gloomy day here, yep, it feels like fall, reminding me that I have little time left to wear my favorite summer color – coral – and one of my favorite summer ‘fun’ scents – Bvlgari Omnia Coral, so in defiance of my usual synchronicity-with-nature I chose both for today!

Tried another from the Olfactif box – Dame Perfumery Pear, Waterlily & Amber. It packs a big sweet floral 80’s punch but surprisingly, I like it! Now that it is nearly gone, need to decide what next. One of the best things about working from home is fragrance freedom.

Good Afternoon Everyone! SOTD is Chanel’s Cristalle. I have heard from so many people on here that they wear this. I was curious, so this past weekend I went to Neiman Marcus and visited the Chanel section. The SA smiled and said, “Well if it isn’t the Jo Malone lady! ” That’s what the whole store calls me! LOL! She said that she was going to convert me over one way or another. I left with a bag full of samples and a bottle of Cristalle. I am loving it. But, I still bought a bottle of Jo Malone Blackberry and Bay as well. 🙂
It was a good weekend! Hope everyone is having a “Terrific Tuesday”.

Today I’m wearing Ineke Balmy Days & Sundays. My favorite of the (adorable and sweetly packaged) sampler pack I got a few years back, but didn’t love it so much that I was tempted to use the very generous offer of a credit of the sampler price on a full bottle. Maybe I should have! In any case, fresh and lovely in our warm weather today.

After five years of toving the first (Calice Becker, in the octagonal bottle) Ines de la Fressange, I finally got my mitts on the second (Alberto Morillas, leaves bottle) version and am testing today.

I’d heard references to berry-musk with this one, but what I’m getting is a blackcurrant-rose tweak on Coco Mlle. Lots of patchouli (I’m sensitive to it, so that might be why I’m picking it up when hardly anyone else notices it), some nice florals. Very early-2000s, modern-chypre floral thing. I’m finding it pleasant.

I don’t know why CM smells so awful on me. It’s really lovely on my sister – and there’s another band mom that worked at band camp with me last week, and she wears it as well. Also gorgeous. I kept wanting to lean in for another sniff. On me it screeches.

SOTD is Miller Harris Fleurs de Sel, and I’m loving the salty herbal oakmoss vibe. I’m also getting rose and vetiver…just delicious. It’s working well in the heat and humidity we are having here in New England today.

BTW: Has this one been dc? It’s very difficult to find. I had to buy off eBay after I finished my decant.

Pacifica Tahitian Gardenia body butter, just a small smear on my arms. I was planning on spraying actual perfume when this wore off but it is still going strong. Found it at TJMaxx the other day – best buck-fifty I’ve spent in a long time.

Oh, gosh you make me want to run up to TJMaxx first thing tomorrow. The Pacificas have suddenly become hard to find in my area–I could order online, I realize, but of course buck-fifty to have in hand immediately does sound more enticing!

Penhaligon’s Vaara for me today. I love this and it’s definitely related to NVC Mohur and Ormonde Jayne Ta’if. In fact, had also put on a little Ta’if lotion this morning after my shower and they work together really well.

3 SOTDs today. I started with a good douse of Creed’s Fleurissimo from a sample. It’s nice, but doesn’t last long at all. By lunchtime, I found myself at Bendel’s and decided to go in and see if they still had any perfume left from their sale. I found the Union coffret which I’d been coveting for 60% off! Score! I already had a tiny decant of Celtic Fire, which I knew I liked. I sprayed Gothic Bluebell on one arm and Quice Mint & Moss on the other.

In the heat, I found GB a bit too sweet, even cloying, and QMM just too fresh, sporty. But on a long and highly air conditioned train ride, I really liked the GB. Still couldn’t quite handle the QMM. Now many hours later, GB has faded a lot, but QMM is going STRONG and I finally like it. Excited to try Holy Thistle tomorrow.

SOTD is Lolita Lempicka L’Eau au Masculin. This is a sparkling spicy-woody delight. I am blessed to work in a spacious warehouse type environment, which means I can be adventurous and heavy handed when I spray in the morning. But I keep a bottle of CDG Avignon in my desk drawer if I need a spritz of something friendly and comforting in the afternoon. Can anyone recommend something from the cologne family for someone generally phobic of clean-citrus frags?
