Wednesday scent of the day 7/30

Posted by Robin on 30 July 2014 92 Comments

angelica

Congratulations, you've made it to another Wednesday. What fragrance are you wearing to celebrate?

My pick today: Strange Invisible Perfumes Musc Botanique. I'd forgotten how much I liked this one (and until I re-read the review, how much Kevin hated it).

And since it's Wednesday — here's a pop up book for the Tori Amos song Wednesday...

Reminder: this Friday, August 1st, will be Indie Special Friday: wear something from an indie brand. The following Friday, August 1st, wear a favorite citrus fragrance.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2014, where I'll try to always have the next six or seven weeks mapped out in advance.

Jicky extrait today. But just got a new bottle of Vol de Nuit extrait in the post today, so that’ll be for tomorrow!

Is the Jicky a recent bottle? I’ve two Jicky extraits that were wildly different. One from the early nineties that was very sweet, more oriental and one 2000-somrthing that was much closer to EdT. I’d love a new bottle, whatever it smells like.

It’s a new Jicky (less than a year old). It does smell more like the old EDT (minus the civet), just a lot more longevity.

SOTD is MCMC Phoenix (notes: peach, cherry blossom, Tunisian neroli, and vanilla). It is a very pretty skin scent and great for the summer. I smell nothing artificial or harsh. I bought it a while ago, tried it once, and put it away. It has really grabbed me this time around, and I’ll be wearing it all summer. It comes in alcohol and oil-based versions, and I have the perfume oil.

    Jessica reviewed it at https://freebox.it.com/2011/08/21/mcmc-fragrances-love-phoenix-fragrance-review/%3C/a%3E.%3C/p%3E

I was intending to wear Douce Amere because austenfan mentioned it yesterday and I realized I haven’t worn it for a while. But digging toward the back of the cabinet, I came upon Chergui first –also one I haven’t worn for ages and almost forgot I had–so I’m wearing that. I really need to reorganize and put some of these bottles where I will see them more often!

Guerlain’s Champs Elysees (original formula) which I decided to wear after talking about it with Lucas on one of his Guerlain posts. I forgot how nice it is – mimosa with a pink tinge, unlike my other favourite mimosa, L’Artisan’s Mimosa Pour Moi, which is very definitely green. Amazed how long lasting it is too: I still smell good nearly seven hours later.

I get 5ml sprays from New Directions Aromatics. I just had a bad experience online with proudstyle. I hear good things about a couple of ebay sellers…
I live in Canada, probably more options elsewhere but I get one-offs of things at Japanese discounters like Daiso or Yokoyaya…

No….not melancholia, rather nausea. What happened was I overdid it with a large decant of Chanel Coromandel a few years ago during the winter time, and it put me off those rich chocolate/spice patchouli fragrances. I can’t even wear Coromandel anymore! But… I find the Jessica Simpson Fancy Nights some good patch training wheels so I can ease my way back in. Maybe by the time I get home tonight I can put a small spray of Amber on my wrists and get started…… I used to get compliments on the Amber when I’d wear it to work. It is quite nice for a massive patch/benzoin. Maybe I have melancholia for the time when I could wear it, lol.

I love Kiki. It was on my fb list until I got a couple more samples of the voile d’extraits… the Mito one is heavenly (and now in first place) whereas I didn’t love the edp. I haven’t tried the Kiki one, so now I know I’ll have to try ALL of them before I make my mind up.

Well, I am enjoying the Kiki edp, but I some how want MORE, so I am wondering if the extrait would fit the bill. The edp is, to my nose, clean in a soapy way, and a powdery scent–sort of how Timbuktu gets soapy in the dry down. It is NOT a detergent soapy… hard to explain. From earthy, herby to sweet and clean… (I know I sound like a broken record, but when I say clean I mean it in a outdoorsy way, not remotely ozonic or laundry detergent). Like if you rubbed fresh-picked lavender on your hands and then washed it off…. the scent that would linger.

I guess because the formulations are so different for them all (edp’s having passionfruit to jazz them up) you really do have to try all the variations.
I already have A Taste of Heaven and some other lavenders, so that’s the only reason I’m hesitating about Kiki (oh and $ of course)- but I do love the passionfruit in it

I’m trying Timbuktu for the first time today, so now I know exactly what you mean by clean and soapy, but not detergent-y. Not what I was expecting, for some reason.

Wearing Paprika Brazil since I picked up a couple of samples prior to Hermes day. It’s a warmish iris on me and not nearly as interesting as the essential oil blend that I found amongst my possessions that I’ve been randomly using to bring down the infection from my cat’s scratch (essential oils are working fine an half my calf is no longer red, hot, with tight skin and oozing around the wound; now it’s only inflamed around the wound a little bit)

Reminds me of an intense darker version of Borneo 1834. I do not need a FB of this, thank god.

Later on today I’ll be wearing Chandler Burr’s Untitled S02E03, the new one he debuted on Luckyscent last week. I have sniffed the cap and I got a noseful of something aquatic and/or ‘fresh’. Ack!

Penhaligon’s Peoneve, a citrusy floral, totally work appropriate, but it’s always reminded me of something, and I just remembered what. When I was in middle school I had a set of Love’s scents that included a jasmine scent (it was the one in the purple bottle).

So, um, don’t tell my husband that he bought me a super expensive dupe of a drugstore body mist. : P

Pseudo commando at the moment as I’ve dabbed a drop from 3 sample vials for a very first sniff. What am I sniffing? Some Raffy samples: Shimmer (aldehydes + florals), American Gypsy (vanilla), & Tropic Princess (tuberose). All seem to fade very quickly into musk of some sort… not bad, just ordinary. Very straightforward types of scents. I did kinda like Shimmer’s opening notes; I’ve smelled better in scents like Divine L’ame Soeur or Bruno Acampora PrimaT or #5. I think I’ll use these as dryer sheets or maybe room sprays. I have some dried diffuser sticks (the kind that soak up and diffuse liquid) and I’ve been just spraying the sticks with perfume. Seems to last a couple days and scents a room nicely!

Later I plan to wear Crown Bouquet. This smells like a sweet field of wild flowers! It has a nice touch of green grassy freshness.

Wearing PdN Eau d’Ete today. I like this one a lot, but it is gone pretty fast. I just re-read your review and you mention some people find it too musky or clean/soapy – maybe I am anosmic to the musk? And I usually hate soapy stuff and don’t have a problem with it. Maybe I’ll spritz something else after lunch.

The SOTD posts have definitely inspired me to dig around and try things that have not been worn in awhile. I think I’ll wear L’Eau Mixte tomorrow as I love that PdN too and have my Afterlier sample ready for indie Friday!

I’m ashamed to admit it, but today is the first time I’ve tried Mitsouko. If the oakmoss in the post-regulation tester at my local Bloomingdale’s is this good, I can’t even imagine what the original smelled like! Just amazing and rocketed to to the top of my “to buy” list 🙂

The version I tested was the EDT. How do the EDP and parfum compare?

Caron Coup de Fouet. Carnation soliflore. Probably unimprovable.

Agonist Isis from a pray sample. I think I must just have sniffed the bottle when it came and put it away. My first reaction after I sprayed was “uh-oh, I smell like a pineapple milkshake” but it has turned out to be surprisingly wearable for something so sweet.

SOTD = Atelier Cologne Santal Carmin

This is the latest in the Collection Metal series. I have been wearing this for the 3rd straight day and so far so good. On this third wearing, I finally smelled the lime in the top notes but it was very faint. I get woods, saffron (!), vanilla and now in the extreme dry down, perhaps a touch of incense but it is likely a figment of my imagination.

I’m waffling over Indie Friday – Hiram Green Moon Bloom (it will be my first wearing) or DSH Oeillets Rouges (worn once with a broken sprayer so did not het the full effect). Methinks the familiar has an edge.

Happy Hump Day Everyone! Two days down, and one day left to go of administering the Bar Exam. My SOTD is Atelier’s Orange Sanguine again. Its soft and none offensive. I even had a few testers tell me that I smelled nice. Mission accomplished!

SOTD is L’Artisan Timbuktu, the first time I’ve tried it (thanks, Hajusuuri!). For some reason I was not expecting such a clean, soapy scent. I think it’s gone now, although between the gas leak earlier (the oven seems to do it about once a year; we’ve had the gas co. out four times, and they can never detect anything) and the neighbor’s barbecue, my nose may just be tired.

I won some Musc Botanique in a drawing last year, and my experience was quite different from both yours and Kevin’s. The herbal top notes, which I enjoyed, stuck around for hours, but I couldn’t smell the musk at all. I wound up swapping it.
