Thursday scent of the day 7/10

Posted by Robin on 10 July 2014 92 Comments

pink grapefruit

What fragrance are you wearing today?

I'm wearing Dawn Spencer Hurwitz Pamplemousse. I smell more cheerful and awake than I am.

Reminder: tomorrow, July 11, will be Flanker Friday: wear a flanker fragrance, and extra bonus points for wearing a flanker of a flanker! The following week, Friday the 18th, will be Sample Grab Bag: pick a fragrance at random from among your untried samples.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2014, where I'll try to always have the next six or seven weeks mapped out in advance.

SOTD is 1872 for Men (Clive Christian). Haven’t worn it in ages, but remembered to be VERY careful not to overapply – if that happens I can literally taste it. Yuk! A little bit of this goes a very long way. 🙂

Exactly. This seems to be the only fragrance I own that has this characteristic.

Now wondering if I have other frags that contain more than a little galbanum. I suppose it is possible that I just haven’t over-applied them like this one.

I was just thinking of Calypso yesterday! I had a big sample the other year, drained it, and have struggled with whether or not it is FBW….. I recall thinking it was just such a nice warm rose.

Way too hot for me today but perfect for a lovely citrus like your Pamplemousse, so I chose Seville a L’Aube. I’ve even named a new needlework design I’ve just completed after the lovely Seville scent, a lace over tangerine colored threads. I can hear the castenets

SOTD is Aromatics Elixir. My grandma recently found her (very) old stick of the solid perfume. It is just amazing on the skin and lasts all day. It comes in a little tube–almost like a lipstick and is really easy to apply. I wish they would sell that version again. It is fantastic!

My Grandma seems to think she got it in the nineties as some limited edition type deal. I can’t seem to find any sign of its existence online, however. It’s definitely Aromatics, though!

A couple of years ago they did a 40th anniversary solid in a necklace pendant, and a check online shows some solid perfume compacts available, but in the traditional style rather than tubular.

This sounds like what Paco Rabanne used to do in the mid eighties, solid twist-up sticks, like those skinny Softlips lip-balm tubes, as gift-with-purchase giveaways: I had Metal and Calandre. I wish more companies did solids like that — more convenient than the little tins (which are rare enough) — although I suppose easily mistaken for lip balm and horrifyingly smeared on the lips….

SOTD is Chanel Cristalle layered over Tocca Violette, influenced by yesterday’s uninspiring sample of L’Aritsan Vert Violette. I liked the idea, but not the execution, and with the Cristalle/Violette combo I get the green followed by violet that I wanted from Vert Violette. I like this layering pair and will definitely wear again. I’m also happy I can get the idea I wanted using what I have and without having to buy a new bottle of perfume 🙂

Scrambled about in the untested sample box today and came out with Il Profumo Vanille Bourbon. I was hoping for something along the lines of Lubin’s Idole. Instead I smell exactly like a marshmallow toasted over a campfire. :S This might make a nice night-time comfort scent, but it’s a little bit weird at work.

I was going to save Mugler Eau de Star for Flanker Friday but I couldn’t decide if it was a proper flanker so I wore it today instead. It’s flankerish because it’s basically Angel, but Angel with peppermint extract, artificial watermelon flavouring, and Miel de Bois tipped into the vat, and it is just about the weirdest thing I own. There’s no way that freshened Angel should work, and it probably doesn’t, but I like it anyway.

Why not indeed! I think the world would be a better place if we ignored the labels and just asked ourselves, Does this smell good? Does it smell good on me? Does it make me happy? Because that’s all that matters.

SOTD is Chanel No. 5. I have been battling a cold/allergies for a month and my obstetrician wants be to get it checked out to make sure it’s nothing that could be harmful to the baby. Unfortunately, the only internal medicine doc who could get be in has terrible reviews. It seems I am going to have to be extra assertive, hence the No. 5. It has always made me feel powerful in a classy, polite sort of way.

Oh gosh- good luck. When I was pregnant and had troubles with my allergies, the only thing I could take was sudafed, which didn’t entirely work, b/c then I’d want to drink a lot of caffience. I just wanted to put my head under a cold wet towel and sleep for 4 weeks! Good luck!

The more people I talked to, the more I found out that nearly every woman I know developed allergies or had the worst case ever while pregnant. Even my own mother. In 36 years I’ve never known her to see a specialist, although I do know she’s allergic to bananas and ragweed (they are related somehow). She just avoids them and manages fine. Then she told me a story the other day that involved the allergist she had while pregnant with me. Apparently they were really bad general pollen, dust, dander types, then went away after I was born. Go figure!

As for me, I’ve been using a neti-pot and pummeling my eyebrows, cheeks, and jaw with hot water from the shower head massage setting. That’s about all I can do. OB/GYN gave me the okay for Zyrtec. It worked once. When I tried it again two days in a row, not only did it not help the allergies at all, the baby didn’t move for a whole day afterward. Probably a coincidence but not worth the risk…especially when I get more relief from eating a Popsicle.

Hi Lucy, I don’t know where you live, but speaking as am internist myself, if there are other docs you would much rather see, have your OB call one personally and get you in. Things still get done that way, thank goodness. Nothing like a little professional courtesy!

Thank you for the advice. I’ve had the OB set me up with specialists, but thought I could handle this one myself. Turns out I was wrong. The appointment was a bust. I was as assertive as could be without yelling at the guy and all I got was him shrugging his shoulders and telling me he doesn’t know what’s wrong. It would have been a better use of my time to just mail him my $20 copay and stay home.

I will send my OB an email right now and see if he can help. I’m due in a month and do not want to be having this congestion, cough, and scratchy throat while in labor. Thank you.

Eau Premiere for me, too, today. I put it on as a test. I wore it months ago, and the initial notes (maybe the aldehydes) really made my nose hurt. Today I put a bit on and went outside in the warm weather (about 78 F) for an hour to see if the heat would speed up the fragrance’s evolution. It did! and the fragrance wears much better for me that way. I’ll have to save it for warm days spent outside from now on.

Wearing Rien, and it’s the first perfume in my new work rotation that has lasted past the morning. Much more conscious of longevity now that I canNOT respritz. Feeling rather deprived about this all, so this morning I ordered six (mainly Demeter) rollerball perfumes. I am reasonable confident rolling will be much less annoying to the officemate than the spritzing was – but if not I will let everyone here know. And how.

My SOTD is Ramon Monegal’s Cherry Musk. I liked it a few days ago as it was fairly comforting and cheery, but it definitely wasn’t right for my work day today. Today I found it like a cloying, vinegar-ed cotton candy.

To be fair, it may just be my mood – I have a feeling it’s not necessarily the scent itself!

OJ Champaca today (one of my Monday mail suggestions that hit the mark for me!) From a sample vial.
It sort of kind of reminds me of Si by Lolita Lempicka, which turns unappealing on my skin.

But not Champaca! It is airy and lightly fancy. Good office silage (even with my dabs).

Not sure what to wear tomorrow. Think I might stop at Sephora on my way home and get a sample of a flanker something.

Met up with Hajusuuri and Ihadanidea and we did a bit of sniffing and shopping so my SOTE is Sideris and it smells so good on me that both of them are considering getting a bottle too…..

SOTD is Jo Malone Blackberry &Bay. I love it, and it was perfect for a warm day and a dentist appointment. I think it’s all gone now, but I just forgot a pot of quinoa on the stove, so now all I smell is burnt grain. I’ll have to find something nice to put on after the smell subsides.

I tried Gaultier Classique Eau d’Ete yesterday, thinking it might be a candidate for Flanker Friday, but didn’t care for it. There’s allegedly some neroli in it, but it mostly smells like watered-down Classique. At least it only set me back 99 cents.

SOTD is Infusion D’iris EDP. I have loved this scent since it’s launch and splurged and bought a one ounce bottle today. Every time I look at the tiny bottle on my vanity I am filled with joy!

Got a sample of FM Eau de Magnolia and am enjoying it. Trying to figure out what it reminds me of – possibly some kind of lemon candy, or limoncello? Haven’t had that in a long time, so I’m not sure. Interesting.

Wore AG Matin d’Orage this morning, and when it wore off, I put on SL Eau. Several hours later it too has worn off, so I am about to shower and then I’m not sure what I’ll wear for bed.

My flanker of the day is Stella Nude, which I’ve tried layering over l’Eau Ambree for the first time. Works well!
