And reader Laurels has a question: which is the bigger regret — the perfumes you bought but don't really love, or the perfumes that you love but didn't manage to buy?
I am wearing Dior New Look 1947. I smell pretty fabulous.

Today I wore Lutens Santal de Mysore. I have a few Lutens but realized I don’t wear them all that often because they can be a bit demanding at times. But it was a great choice, and I don’t get the fabled curry note.
Bedtime post-shower scent is Laura Mercier Creme Brûlée body soufflé, from a trio of mini size. I love the texture of these but wish there were non-gourmand options as these are only a bedtime option for me.
About the question: both. As not everyone ships to Aus I have to pounce when I can, and things like Lutens ltd distribution have a very small, if any, window of opportunity. So there are some I’ve missed and would have to cross the world to get. And I have some things I don’t love, but I don’t think any $$$$ regrets, just some anti-climaxes

It does last that long in me either. And you’re right- these are potent body creams- I’ll wake up still smelling like dessert!
Just don’t bite your arm, it’s so delicious! I love to wrap myself up in LM’s creme brulee body cream on cold winter days.
Musc Monoi – received my bottle the the day before a cross country 4th of July roadtrip. The most fragrant 28 hours of driving ever to be recorded. Been wearing it daily since.

SOTD is L’Artisan Verte Violette. I have a sample, and I am not impressed by it. It was green at first, for approximately 10 minutes, and then a subtle violet that is so subtle I can’t even really smell it. Meh. I have a bottle of Tocca Violette that I really like, I may just top that off with something green to get the same affect without fading after 10 minutes!
I don’t regret buying anything, although I haven’t really spent a lot of money on something I didn’t like. I do regret not buying stuff I like that has since been discontinued 🙁
I know VV had lots of fans, but I never loved it…
Today I am wearing CB:IHP I Am a Dandelion. I found a sample while clearing out a box of crud I had swept off my desk a year ago that was buried in the closet. It is wonderfully green for a bit and then there is a green powdery drydown. I know it won’t last but I haven’t decided on my next spritz.
Ah, had almost forgotten that one! Great name, too.
This scent always impresses me, because he has managed to get that sticky sap smell into it. I find this scent surprisingly long lasting.
I’m so disorganized that I managed to leave the house this morning scentless, but I found a sample of Volutes EdP in my desk and I’m wearing that.
I think I have more “bought but don’t really love it” bottles than ones I regret not buying, but then I haven’t been at this long enough that many things I’ve wanted have been discontinued or reformulated, so there are a lot still on my “buy it someday” list that I might end up regretting if they disappear.
I have only a handful that I’m really pissed I didn’t buy, and way more than a handful I regret buying. So we’re about the same.
Today is a Dior day for me too! I’m wearing Dune, and have so missed it! Someone, I think yesterday? mentioned Dune and I went home and hunted for my decant. I hadn’t thought of Dune for the summer heat, but I decided to go for it and I’m glad I did!
I love how well blended this is. Floral, wood, vanilla loveliness. The dry down is to die for.
I agree, I’m a big fan of Dune and the drydown is to die for. Fortunately, it lasts a l-o-o-ng time on me.

I’m wearing a bit of Night Blooming Jasmine oil from the Body Shop on my upper arm, trying Mitzah by Dior on my left wrist, and L’Ambre des Merveilles (inspired by Hajusuuri) on my right. So little of what I wear ever projects that far, and I think my sniffer’s not that good, so testing so many doesn’t overpower me, or anyone else as far as I can tell.
I’ve been interested in perfume for over six years but am only just now letting myself indulge. I’m not exactly sure why, but I guess I was finally just willing to treat myself. Life is short, no? Which is to say that I regret not having started purchasing things earlier. I had my bottles of Feminite du Bois and L’air de Rien, but I could have had so much more fun so much earlier. But oh well – time to make up for lost time!

i’m wearing Eau de Polder (L’Essence de Mastenbroek) today. It smells like wildflowers and hay to me and is nice on a sunny day. It’s an oil, so I was hesitant to try it, but there is no heavy feel to it at all.
Today I am wearing Iskander. There is a heatwave and I had outside meetings today – it was hell, but at least Iskander gave me coolness and comfort.
I regret the perfumes I bought but don’t really love. As an enthusiastic newbie, I bought some bottles I would rather not have splurged on. Eg I do like Tea for Two but if I had realised it’s not that longlasting, I would have bought Chergui instead, and so forth.
I am wearing Cacharel Amor Amor. And TBH… no particular burning perfume regrets either way. Yet!
Lostmarch’s Din Dan is my SOTD. It’s going to be another blazing hot day here and I wanted something citrusy-minty and this fit the bill. I’ve never liked this quite enough to want a full bottle, but I find myself buying a couple samples every summer so I can wear it now and then on a hot day.
I really like Din Dan and have almost bought a bottle several times. I’ve been getting by on a decant and have so much similar stuff, I can’t justify it!
I’m wearing Fils de Dieu du Riz et des Agrumes. I smell pretty fab too. I have never tried any of those Diors except Eau Noire which I loved.
I liked Grand Bal a lot, though I wish they came in more reasonable sizes.
Fils de Dieu is one of my go-to summer smells. I can’t get enough of it. Awesome choice. 🙂
I’ve suddenly remembered my biggest perfume regret: A large bottle of Paris YSL extrait. It was very cheap as well. I just wasn’t as much into buying perfume as now, and let it slip.
I have a different philosophy on perfume regret. We seem to beat ourselves up a lot about buying perfume that we don’t love unconditionally. But I have bought plenty of restaurant meals in my life that I ended up not loving…ditto dresses or shoes…bottles of wine…etc. With a meal, it’s a one-time thing, over and done. With clothes, you eventually clean out your closet and give it away. Kind of a waste, but no need to let it haunt you. I think we hang onto bottles and let them haunt us. If you don’t wear it, swap it or sell it or give it away, and if no one wants it, just throw it away. I’ve done it before, it’s liberating. Or put your unloved bottles in storage in the basement, you might love them in 10 years.
SOTD is Huitieme Art Myrrhiad, which is a really awesome vanilla root beer scent.

I completely agree! Most of us don’t wear clothes until they’re absolutely threadbare or shoes until the soles are worn through, so we shouldn’t feel bad about not using up every last drop of every bottle of perfume.
Also when you have lots of perfume it’s easy to be generous with it. 🙂
You are absolutely right of course. I still have a few bottles that I want to sell, but never seem to get round to. Others I may not wear that much but I like to have them on hand for reference so to speak.
There have been a couple of “regrets” that I got rid of and now I miss them. In general, all my non-love purchases cost under $50, so they seem especially not worth crying over. I’ve spent a lot more on shoes I only wore 3 times!
I love shoes but I’m boringly prudent about buying them, also I can’t walk in heels anymore ( I sort of limp the day after!), so have no regrets in that area. Clothes are a different matter.
Yes, this. I regret things that I’ve gotten rid of more than anything that I’ve bought or not bought.
I’m wearing Guerlain Plus Que Jamais today and I absolutely love it. Delicious summery scent.
As for regrets, the only thing I kind of regret spending money on was a group of JAR samples only because it was expensive and none of them really work on me. But that’s just a minor regret because I’m glad I got the chance to smell them all.
What I *really* regret is not knowing about Guerlain Guet Apens before it was discontinued because I am utterly OBSESSED with that scent and would kill for a full bottle.

Bronze Goddess today. Not something I have ever worn to work before, but since my heart is on vacation, I figured why not.

I’m wearing Jo Malone’s Nectarine Blossom & Honey layered with Orange Blossom. But Nectarine & Honey is so dominant I don’t think I get and of the Orange Blossom. I’ve actually really come around on this scent, which was given to me by a friend. My husband loves it, so I’m trying here…
I like Elisa’s take on perfume regrets, but if I had to choose between which is the bigger regret – buying but not loving, or “losing out,” this cheapskate says buying but not loving! Psychologically, I really have to justify any spending, so if I ever managed to convince myself to buy something and it ended up not working, I would feel tremendous guilt (yes, I am trying to work through this in therapy…)

SOTD is Gucci Guilty Intense.
I tend to slightly regret the bottles/decants I bought that I don’t love, but view them as swap bait for someone else (looking at you, Gucci Guilty Intense)! Insofar as the ones that I didn’t buy, no regrets. There is so much out there to sniff I know I will find others to love if I miss out from time to time.
I actually really like Gucci Guilty Intense, but afraid I already have a bottle.
I think I would far more regret things I have missed out on. Yesterday, managed to score a 1oz bottle of Burberry The Beat at Marshall’s for a great price. It was the same bottle that I had returned the day before in a fit of buyer’s remorse. I just wasn’t sure about it since it can wear heavily and be kind of cloying. But there were aspects I did like about it, and my husband and kids liked it when I had a sample of it awhile back. Anyhoo, I discovered this morning that if I layer it with BBW White Citrus, it lightens it up and gives it the lift it needed. Double bonus is that I wasn’t wearing the White Citrus at all and it was my first successful attempt at layering that didn’t involve Jo Malones and their stock recommendations!
SOTD will be either Theorema or Nasomatto Nuda. For a while, my biggest regret was discovering Theorema a little too late because it was discontinued. Then there was some success and managed to get two bottles on Beauty Encounter last month. I was lucky to just in time find out that Nuda was being discontinued and nabbed a second bottle. I don’t wear Nuda that often because the tuberose in it is pretty dominant and I’m one who finds tuberose suffocating. But the skanky jasmine is the saving grace of Nuda.
I did not know Nuda was being discontinued…shame.
Sometime last year, it did come down that Nuda was being discontinued. Even though I do have 30 odd full bottles, I grabbed a second bottle knowing I would kick myself in a year or two by not getting a second bottle. Haven’t seen it on ebay yet.
Apparently the cost of jasmine oil was too high for ongoing production. Glad I got some before it became a rare unicorn sighting.
Wearing Byredo Green today, which is too strong for school clinic but hopefully it will fade down enough before then.
I’m not a fan of SJP or “Lovely,” but I am of her second scent, Covet, my SOTD. It’s perfect on a cool and sunny day, and its unusual combination of notes smells delicious on me. Years ago I used to grow scented geraniums, and I remember rubbing their crinkly leaves between my fingers to release their delightful scents of lemon, lavender, apple, chocolate, mint and probably some others I don’t remember. I planted them outside my screened porch, along with English lavender outside my back door, so that whenever my dog bounded into the yard he would inadvertently perfume the air by brushing against them. Sadly, both the dog and the plants are long gone but that sweet memory is refreshed whenever I enjoy Covet.
As for perfume regrets, I measure the value of what I have (or don’t have) by what I’ve learned, so I have no regrets in my perfume purchases or lack thereof. My great perfume regret is that prior to the Internet when little info was available about the desirability/value of vintage fragrances, I finally tossed the last of my mom’s scents (the ones not to my taste) after keeping them for many years after her passing. Had I known then what I know now, someone else would’ve given them a good home.
I am also one of the few that liked Covet. Nice scent memory! I may need to go track down my bottle now that you’ve reminded me.
I had a similar experience with tossing out (old) perfume… had I known then what I know now, I would’ve given them away. Of course, I probably have the nose now to appreciate them more now. Back then… not so much.
I like Covet, but I rarely wear it. Maybe I’ll have to put some on tomorrow.

My SOTD is Elie Saab Intense. It may be too much for summer. Probably more of a Fall / Winter fragrance. Regardless, its a nice fragrance.
The scent that I regret buying is Rose Water and Vanilla by Jo Malone. I am a huge Jo Malone fan and love her fragrances, but this particular one was not for me. I was kind of talked into buying it from the SA. I ended up giving it away to my mom. She likes it, so at least it wasn’t money wasted.
The L’Artisan fragrances, particularly Amour Nocturne, is a fragrance that I absolutely love but haven’t purchased. I still can’t get past the price. But, one day I will save my pennies to get it.
I am wearing Grand Amour today. The resinous note seems so strong at the start but as it burns off it is a lovely background for the florals that waft in and out. I don’t regret buying this one at all, but I am only now willing to admit I thought I was buying QUEL Amour!
Ah, I used to have a bottle of Grand Amour and gave it away…I miss it now!

Angel Eau Sucre is fabulous but does not last long ( or plays peek-a-boo over long stretches. Vanille 44 makes just about anything smell even better and/or last longer.
Regrets? It’s not in my vocabulary 🙂

Today I’m wearing Anna Sui La Vie Boheme, which I just purchased last week. It’s been a while since I smelled her original eponymous fragrance, but this strikes me as a lighter version of that. I really like it, but I’m a sucker for all of her perfumes (and the bottles, even the admittedly creepy doll head ones!).
Perhaps it’s the rose and sandalwood in both scents that remind you of the original? I’ve never smelled La Vie Boheme, but I do enjoy the original Anna Sui. On me it’s a woody, powdery rose with a juicy raspberry note. And I love the gorgeous goth purple/black bottle!
I am wearing Atélier Cologne Gold Leather. My regrets are mostly in the bought but don’t love category.
I definitely regret the ones that got away far more than the ones I bought but don’t love. Because of discontinuation and reformulation, it ultimately only becomes more difficult and expensive – or impossible – to find something again if you miss it. I also feel like the percentage of new perfumes that I like is decreasing, which also makes me regret the earlier, better perfumes that I missed. Nonetheless, with the exponential increase in new perfumes and the impossibility of sampling them all, I’m preemptively regretting the perfumes I’ll miss because they’ll disappear before I can even write them down on a to-try list. 🙁
My purchase mistakes are comparatively few, and any annoyance is mitigated by the likelihood that I could eventually sell, swap or gift them away if I really wanted to. I wish I could rely more on decants, but those evil little spray vials are treacherous: many seem to last forever, but others mysteriously and suddenly evaporate. By the time you realize it, it’s usually too late to replace them. I have been buying more commercial samples and minis, instead.
Of course, I do love snaring a well-priced partial or vintage bottle, or rotated stock on the discount sites, and some of the exploration sets are a great value. Most of my expensive brand bottles, such as Amouage, By Kilian, and those L’AP special harvest florals, were not full price. So I do play a bit of a waiting game for as long as possible.
The other thing that mitigates purchase regret is that prices keep escalating, so that when I look at what seemed like an exceptionally expensive perfume at the time, it now seems like a bargain compared with today’s luxury prices.
Whatever my regrets, I do have plenty of great perfume with which to console myself! 🙂

I’m wearing Fate today. Company meeting today first thing in the morning and I didn’t want to go for a powerhouse scent. I was trying to do a week of flankers, but made an exception for this morning. I’ll have to flakerize my SOTE instead. I think maybe Lolita Lempicka Fleur Defender…
I tend to regret those that passed me by rather than those I bought. I can always sell, split, or give away perfume. It’s way harder to search down discontinued or reformulated things. I think back of when Samsara was released and how I liked it, but never got a bottle. Or Lauren in the red bottle – never owned it but always loved it. The threat of discontinuation has forced my spending recently because I just don’t want to miss out on something great.
I am, however, getting better at not buying stuff just because it’s “cheap” – the last bottle I got was Rochas Muse and it’s just fine, but after one or two wearings, I know I won’t wear it much. Do I regret purchasing it because it was only $12? …Yes, probably. Do I regret that bottle of Muguet 2014 I purchased thinking that the formulation may change in the future? Not really.
Today I am wearing Amouage Beloved from my meager decant…. I think I’ve decided that I’m going to eliminate all other purchases and then I can justify buying a discounted bottle for Xmas present to myself. Ah, it is just so put together, so lovely!
I have a few regrets, but most of those I have swapped away or am attempting to sell on ebay. I think the biggest turn around from bottle score to bottle despised was Cacharel’s Eden. I found a bottle at the Parfum House in PDX and was so stoked that I bought it and wore it like crazy for about 2 weeks. I was in all swooney heaven. I don’t know if it was “fragrance goggles” or what, but I didn’t wear it again for a number of months. The next time I put it on, it was like sour milk patchouli poison. I am happy to have swapped it away to a good home. Like a bad affair, I have no idea what I was thinking. I wished I’d spent the money on something much more elusive when I was at that famed shop.
I am with CM and a few others above, that mostly I regret not buying something when it was easy to find and inexpensive: Marielle Burani comes to mind particularly.

I can’t tell you how many times I practically had a bottle in my hands and was like, naw, next time… well, eventually all those next times run out. I have 1/2 a bottle of the edp that I horde.
Humid here in AZ. Monsoons at night and muggy during the day. I love Ubar in this moisture. It really blooms. I have had it in rotation with Bal a Versailles since the storms hit. Heavenly! If my coworkers have issues, they have been keeping it to themselves.
I love BaV but have not worn it in the summer. It’s a very interesting choice!!!
Try Bal EDP in vintage form, it’s stunningly beautiful in hot weather.

Wearing Armani Prive – Myrrhe Imperiale. Not really a myrrh centric fragrance despite the name. I find it comfortable to wear as a lightly spiced, gourmand-ish oriental amber.
My answer to the question is definitely the latter. The torment of “if only…” is too much!
SOTD is VC&A First EDT. Found it at Ross last weekend, after thinking I wasn’t going to buy anything for a while, given how much I spent last quarter. See how long that lasted. 😛 I never liked aldehydes much, but recently I’ve kind of taken a liking to them. Weird.
As for regrets… I haven’t really regretted “one that got away”, at least not yet. There is always more stuff out there, so I’d probably forget about it eventually. I don’t usually regret buying something I don’t love because in many cases I figure I’ll just have swap capital for the next swap meet. I think the ones I kind of regret are the cheaper ones I blind bought and didn’t love because they’re not good swap capital.
Wearing Jasmine White Moss. Last regret was buying Fancy Nights, despite only being $7 – it was vile! My apartment was quite upset. The next day I put in on the bench next to the Starbuck’s waiting for a gleaner.
I’m wearing Eau Premiere today; I haven’t pulled it out in ages.
I’m squarely in the Regretted Purchases category, maybe because they tend to be right under my nose, so not as easily dismissed. If nothing else, they give me perspective when I start wanting something new.

I rarely regret having bought something, but I have regrets about things I didn’t buy. I should have bought Miss Dior on its relaunch in 1990 or so, a really good version (probably not like the 1947 original but still great), and likewise Paco Rabanne La Nuit, if I had recognized their greatness when they were launched instead of years later. I should have bought that full bottle of Theorema. I should have bought an extra bottle of Le Feu d’Issey. Shoulda bought Eau Sauvage Fraicheur Cuir. Kingdom by Alexander McQueen. Knowing extrait. Van Cleef & Arpels Gem extrait. It’s a long list.

I love the question! So, I think the fear of being in category two (not having bought something I should have) constantly puts me in category one (buying things I later regret). There are always things one can do with a bought perfume – give it as a gift, layer it, try to sell or swap it. But there are far more things one could do with the money if one hadn’t already spent it! And sometimes its putting petrol in the car and paying the rent, lol!

Biggest Fragrance Regret… Both Gucci Related… never buying a bottle while I could of Gucci Envy for Men and Gucci For Men (The Tom Ford Era Version) and now they are both HIDEOUSLY Expensive on Ebay and just don’t have that kind of disposable income at the moment to snap them up! SO SAD! 🙁
Thats one of my huge regrets!- buying a big bottle of Gucci Envy for Men for an ex because I loved the smell of it. I’m glad he’s gone but damn I want that bottle back!!
Among the myriad of perfumes I have that cover my entire dresser (and bureau), the most recent regrets I have had are the two by Carven–the new “original”and the spring/summer flanker. I saw the bottles everywhere and the original fragrance (and the flanker) were discussed on several perfume blogs I visit now and then. I loved the look of the bottles–they seemed so “Pariesienne” to me. However, IMMHO the juice in both is bland …not much character, and not anything to swoon over. Nothing to hate about either of them, but not much to love either. On another fragrant note, today I lightly sprayed a few spritzes of Frederic Malle Magnolia this morning before leaving for work at 8:15 a.m. At 5:30 p.m. the main boss (who has been at his beach castle for well over two weeks) made a disparaging remark about my perfume and requested that I not wear it to the office again. He then said that he is not a fan of perfume of any kind, however, most likely he forgot who he was talking to as many years ago when he was early in love with his present wife, I was asked at Christmas time what perfume(s) she wore. I mentioned L’eau d’issay, which she started wearing many years ago when she admired it on me, and he purchased it for her on every occassion and in every form. Of course by the time she started wearing the Myake, I was on to new and more unusual scents. So now I am forbidden to wear the Magnolia to work (I should have worn one of my Lutens scents which would probably have made him climb the walls). It is so amazing to me how so many people (not just my bosses) detest perfume and make no bones about it. I do not get it. However, people have been wearing really smelly perfumes for years and years and back then no one thought much of it. Now it is almost a crime. We will be allowed to smoke marajuana soon (not that I am against that change of law) but I don’t see it in the near future that no one will be harrassed with regard to their SOTD.
Filomena, what an unpleasant experience – very sorry to hear about that. At the same time, I can understand how people may feel in a general sense. I love my own carefully selected perfumes, but the perfume I’ve encountered at the office has usually not been all that pleasant. One colleague doused herself so heavily with Coco Mademoiselle that you could smell it in the hallway outside the room she where her desk was. Another used or plug-in air fresheners (so strong!). Everyone has different tastes. Therefore, when I wear perfume to the office, I try to keep it very close. That said, your boss sounds like a bit of a jerk.
