Frederic Malle Eau de Magnolia ~ new fragrance

Posted by Robin on 13 May 2014 11 Comments

Frédéric Malle Eau de Magnolia

French niche line Frédéric Malle will launch Eau de Magnolia next month. The last release from the brand was Dries Van Noten par Frédéric Malle, introduced last year.

Eau de Magnolia was developed by perfumer Carlos Benaïm. It will be the perfumer's first personal fragrance for Malle, although he has already developed several home fragrances for the line, including Jurassic Flower (also based on magnolia) and Rosa Rugosa. The notes for Eau de Magnolia, which is described as transparent, green and fresh, include bergamot, magnolia, grapefruit, vetiver and oak moss.

Frédéric Malle Eau de Magnolia will be available in 50 and 100 ml and in 10 ml travel size trios.

I so appreciate how Mr. Malle invites other perfumers to create under his name.
I look forward to trying this one.

Is magnolia considered a white floral? I think I’ll go look that up now!

Good question…it’s not what I think of when I think of white florals, but not sure how the perfume industry classifies it.

It seems like Magnolia is becoming this year’s absinthe of the high priced niche category. I am curious about this one, though.

That would be ok with me, I love the smell and have never found a perfect one in perfume. Have not tried the Grandifloras yet though.

I love the smell of magnolia and this sounds pretty. That Wanted scent by Rubenstien was based on magnolia Robin I think you reviewed it. Might be the same perfumer? It was
not to bad. Going to have a sniff, if I can find it in my stash lol

The budget for this one is likely to be exponentially higher…so would expect a far better scent. Of course, it’s also going to cost exponentially more 🙂

Now this is one I want to try! It sounds lovely. Not many good magnolia fragrances out there. I love AdP Magnolia Nobile but that is not really true to the magnolia blossom. I don’t like Eau d’Italie Magnolia Romana. That has an aquatic note which makes me queasy. It also has a weird celery-like note (the cypress, basil or hay?) on me. Elizabeth W’s Magnolia is pretty but it is very simplistic.

The Eau d’Italie didn’t work for me either, & agree about the Elizabeth W.

I saw a bottle of this on *bay.fr a week ago (someone selling their press preview) and then specifically asked about it in my local niche perfume boutique that carries FM. They are expecting it to arrive on May 15th, but had a rubber disc with the smell from FM. I GUESS and hope that’s not exactly accurate and maybe only the far drydown…. because what I smelled was star- anise. Nothing else. No vetiver, nothing. Very strange. And I LOVE magnolia. And while I like star-anise, I can buy 100 pks of the spice for the price of the 50ml bottle…

Thanks! We’ll see, I hope it’s magnolia too.

I ordered a decant of Eau de Magnolia, and it is a lovely Spring/Summer fragrance. It smelled more green and citrusy on me, with the floral notes and oakmoss giving it some roundness and depth. My only complaint was that it did not have much staying power.
