Very lazy Friday poll ~ SOTD

Posted by Robin on 22 November 2013 101 Comments

autumn leaves

Jessica is off today, so we're doing a very lazy poll: tell us your scent of the day. If you're so inclined, also tell us why you picked it.

We'll be back tomorrow with our usual lazy weekend poll.

SOTD is Florabotanica. I blind bought a .5 oz bottle for less than $10.00 on eBay, because it is listed as a green floral, which I love. I got it yesterday, so I thought I would try it. I like it so far, but it isn’t anywhere near as good as the Cristalle edp that I wore yesterday. Thank god for the availablility of cheap miniatures at online discounters and eBay.

AC Orange Sanguine. It’s miserably cold over here so I needed a pick-me-up scent (actually lasts several hours on me).

I’m wearing Aftelier Cuir de Gardinia, which I ordered after reading Angela’s review. I got both the liquid and solid samples—wore the liquid yesterday when it arrived and the solid today, and I think I slightly prefer the solid. It seems both subtler and longer lasting, which seems like a contradiction.

SOTD is Eau Duelle, Diptyque. Not too sweet with just that hint of smokiness. I’d normally wear my beloved Mitsouko in this weather, but ever since I’m pregnant it feels overpowering *sigh*.

Hormones really can skew your sense of smell, but it will go back to normal eventually. Eau Duelle is lovely, I slammed through a decant in record time.

That happened to me too when I was pregnant. My sense of smell changed, and I couldn’t take perfume or the smell of cooked meat, etc. Until then I was wearing Magie Noire–sort of like Mitsouko. Don’t worry you will get your sense of smell back. For me, I even didn’t want to wear perfume when I had little babies because I wanted to smell their natural smells and I wanted them to smell my natural smells. Best wishes to you!

Sotd is Les Nereides Imperial Opoponax. I dug out my decant of this yesterday and it smelled so good I put it on again today. Les Nereides has changed the name of this one to just Opoponax; anyone know if the formula has been changed, too? I’m seriously considering a full bottle. Thanks in advance 🙂

Nothing yet today. Yesterday it was BK Musk Oud, because I had just received the sample. I was surprised to find it was basically a rose oud. It smells good; however, I already own BK Rose Oud (an ebay find of a discounted bottle without the box). I put that on later for comparison. I prefer Rose Oud for Calice Becker’s airy, balanced approach to the rose oud theme. Musk Oud (Alberto Morillas) is warmer and spicier, so it will suit other tastes. Yes, very expensive, but I was hoping to really love it and have an excuse to acquire the gold travel atomizer.

Oh, in general how I pick my SOTD is: new samples, enticing reviews or interesting reader comments, whatever catches my eye, or feeling like I need a certain kind of perfume to match the weather or my mood. It is also conditioned by whether or not I’ll be around other people. Sometimes I decide to explore perfumes by a particular nose or brand, or particular notes or themes.

I wore vintage FdB recently and was struck by how deeply unusual it is (or was at the time), and how similar it is to Bois de Violette. Of course, I’d read that it was the basis for many subsequent SLs, but it’s amazing to experience it after trying all the others first.

How do you like it compared with other SLs?

Oh, smart–I am completely in love with Vanille 44, but it disappears heartbreakingly fast from my skin. Do you find that layering gives it more longevity (in addition of course to the added depth/dimension)?

        Hi C.H.

Vanille 44 actually stays all day on me when I wear it alone (4 sprays = ~ 10-12 hours). Try spraying over your head so it covers more surface . When I layer, I use 2 sprays and it absolutely adds depth and dimension as you described!

Oh, thank you for the suggestion! Yes surface area, plus somehow my hair seems to hold scent longer than my skin (maybe a matter of less body heat?)–I’ll def have to try that with Vanille 44.

SOTD is Prada Candy L’Eau. I wanted cosy benzoin, but soft because I was seeing a friend who is seven months pregnant. I didn’t want to burn her nostrils with something huge. It is powdery and pretty. I tend to under apply anyway.

I really blew my choice Tuesday, though. I rebelled and wore MdO’s Oud to the office. A single spray, but it was huge, and got many comments. Mostly positive, but in a world where fragrance is frowned upon it was not my best choice. Eeek!

I bought it for my husband but love it so much myself that I’ll probably use it up before he gets around to trying it (he really isn’t interested in fragrance but will sometimes put some on if I remind him). SOtD: Givenchy Organza Indecence, ’cause that’s the way we roll sometimes lol.

How do I selectit? My GSD, Zena, is my “nose” — that’s ‘German Shepherd Dog’, not ‘Guerlain Spiritueuse Double (Vanille)’. If her ears perk up, she wags her tail and takes a moment to closely sniff my wrist, I have a winner; if she can’t be bother to react, it’s a loser.

She is indifferent to Allure Homme and Boucheron Pour Homme, confused by Kouros but *loves* Organza Indecence.

I either wear it layered with a masculine juice to mute it a little for dancing or by itself at home when I want the house to smell as it would with a woman at home.

Cheers to all from a rainy New Orleans

“Her jeans were from Paris Texas but her perfume was from Paris, France. My poor heart didn’t stand a chance.”

      Or:
I don’t put truffles on my burgers, or perfume myself to be too fancy for my jeans. I’m just a country gal who says what I mean and I got a fancy for you.”

SOTD is J’Adore…mainly because I have a sample. I don’t like it. There’s nothing wrong with it, it does smell good…I just don’t like it. Yesterday was a sample of Tom Ford’s Black Orchid though, and it was really nice. I’m considering getting some. I’m out of nearly everything, I have like…a few drops of Pacifica’s Persian Rose and a teeny bit of two different Smell Bent Frankensmellies. Stupid money problems! But nearly Christmas bonus and then tax (hopefully) refund time, so I guess I might have perfume money again one day soon.

Speaking of, anyone know where I can get a (small) bottle of Cartier De Lune for a halfway decent price? It’s disappeared from the US Cartier website and isn’t at Sephora or Ulta anymore, but isn’t at Strawberrynet yet (and I have no idea what my Fragrantica password is.)

SOTD is Botrytis, as it’s been every day since I bought it. Possible signature scent, but it either doesn’t last long on me or I stop being able to smell it. I do love it, though.

House SOTD are the three scents in the new Diptyque Holiday Coffret – Pomander is going in my kitchen, Opopanax in my entryway, and Feu de Bois here in the family room. My house smells gloriously like the holiday season, even though it’s a balmy 84 in my part of Florida today.

I didn’t wear perfume as I took a trip out to try some Montale perfumes. Unfortunately they didn’t have testers of Black oud, White Oud or Crystal Flowers:( I did however try Greedy Chocolate which I’m not sure I prefer to Amour de Cacoa; perhaps it’s a little richer, which actually would make me prefer the A de C. Also I tried Oud Queen Rose, Deep Rose and Oud Amber Rose. The middle one is pretty but the last somehow too opulent. I also tried a touch of Red Oud on my finger and my nose has been returning to that one all day!

Merlin, were you the one asking a couple of weeks ago about treatments for weak nails? (I am way behind on reading perfume blogs.) If so, have you tried a biotin supplement? I take one 1000 mcg tablet daily, and it seems to do the trick. It’s a B vitamin, recommended by my mother’s doctor.

Hi Laurel, yes it was me. I do have B supplements but never knew they were good for nails too. Now I’ll be more motivated to take them:)

Today I wore L de Lolita Lempika for it’s creamy cinnamon coziness. Perfect for a dreary Friday, like being wrapped in a snuggly blanket.

Me too! Money’s a bit tight, so I think it’ll be my Christmas present. That bottle is delightful, and looks like it has my monogram.

SOTD for me was Ormonde Jayne Woman. We had a 30 degree temperature drop over the last few days and it was rainy and dreary and I picked this because it seemed to suit the weather and be rather cozy.

I did get a carded sample recently of Amouage Fate and have been wearing it almost non-stop since I got it. It’s very individual and striking but I’ve about decided it’s just too sweet overall. Too bad.

Tried Fate yesterday and liked it fine, but it settled into a basic incense after a couple nice hours on me. I wish I got more of the powder folks talk about!

SOTD: Avon Far Away… a nice little powdery number 🙂

SOTD: Cartier Basier Vole. I have a sample of the EdP. I had never tried a lily scent…kind of strong at first but mellowed. I liked how it turned powdery as the day went on.

SOTD: I found a bottle of my mom’s Bellodgia. It smelled so rich and warm on her, decades ago, but this seemed thin and a little artificial. It’s the bubbly glass bottle. I think this was given to her in the 90s but I suspect it’s a reformulation. It was a disappointment. Maybe I should try looking for some vintage. Easy to find?

SOTE: After five straight days of dealing with two lawyers who hate one another, and a syndicate of 5 doctors who want to buy my ranch (for a song) I inherited but can’t afford, I think we have a deal. But painful! Pages and pages of contracts and disclosures. My lawyer barks and has a hairy nose. I have a headache and so will take a bath and put on something outrageously expensive to celebrate tomorrow morning’s initial/final paperwork: Diagilev! Or Beloved. God help me.

Bellodgia must have been the most popular Caron at one time. There is a lot of it on ebay, including the rectangular Baccarat bottles in the thick white boxes. The older stuff really is great!

So sorry about the lawyers, doctors and selling the ranch. This definitely merits Diaghilev or Beloved!

“My lawyer barks and has a hairy nose.”

Oh! You made me laugh with that one! I hope you’ll feel at peace when it’s all over.

SOTD is Dzing! because it’s so gosh darn awesome, even if I don’t know when I put it on whether it will be a “spiced fig and woods” day or “manure, leather, and caramel” one.

I seem to forget about it for months, and then am amazed all over again by how good it is when I do wear it. Nearly every day is potentially a Dzing! day!

SotD is Serge’s Borneo 1834. It’s my first Serge (!), and it’s divine. I love a smooth, peppery patchouli, and I adore dark chocolate, and I really didn’t think Borneo would live up to to my expectations…but it did, and then some. Fascinating, addictive scent. I need a bottle in my life. (Damn Paris exlusives!)

My brother is going to London next month and I’m going to try have this one sent to his hotel. Or is there a branch there that stocks the exclusives? I have Dirty in soap form and it is my favourite of all their soaps! Does the perfume smell exactly like the soap? I am really excited about this one:)

Hi Merliln – the “perfume” smells BETTER than the soap!! It is truly lovely – If your brother is in central London they have a large store on 123 Kings Road – London – which is the Fulham part of London. They would have a good selection of LUSH there. I believe that their exclusive range of fragrance is mostly online – but if I were in London (I live about 200 miles away in the depths of the Welsh countryside) I would def go and check it out. There’s also another branch at 115, Buckingham Palace Rd – really central. Hope he enjoys the trip!!
