Having trouble logging in?

Posted by Robin on 7 November 2013 6 Comments

We've had a problem here for quite some time with the interaction between the Now Smell This log in procedures and the browser caching functions. If you log in and get back to the main page and it still says "Login to comment" at the top, don't worry, you are in fact logged in, and when you open an individual article to comment, you shouldn't have any trouble. If you want to see for sure, all you need to do is press CTRL + F5 to refresh the page — then you should see the "Welcome, whomever" notice at the top left.

I am trying to fix it, I'm just not very good at it, obviously! If you're having any other trouble using the blog, do comment here or on the New Look post.

I have trouble ( as I did on the previous version) occasionally with this issue. It’s funny to me that it is not a constant thing!

I’d say 80 percent of the time it’s fine, and it eventually resolves itself.

Sometimes when I leave the site and come back later, I’ll be logged in; sometimes it happens when I go to one of the “back” pages of the site (looking up a perfume house or something) and when I get back to the main page I will be logged in.

A minor detail, and certainly not one for you to lose sleep over, please!

Yes…it will always eventually resolve itself when the cache updates. Rarely takes more than a few minutes. But it’s annoying. I don’t lose sleep over it, I just take another stab at fixing it every so often! Some day maybe I’ll get it working.

no problem logging in, but deeply nested comments on my iPhone 4s can turn into 1 word per line goofiness…

It’s a problem. I can make the font even smaller for small phone sizes, but don’t know if it would then be too hard to read. Are they readable if you rotate the phone to horizontal? That’s what I’ve been doing w/ my Android, & while it’s not a perfect solution, I hate to make the text smaller if I don’t have to. We might need to do a general usability poll!

Also don’t know what phones are still out there that don’t rotate, which would be another wrinkle.

Ah, so that’s what was going on! I thought maybe it was my laptop or something. It all becomes clear now………
Glad that everyone can post, tho!
