Oh good, I’ve been wanting to ask you all this question for awhile:
What is the best way to remove persistent perfume from clothing? For example, I love Coromandel in the winter but it holds onto my clothing even after repeated washings. I’d wear it more often if this weren’t such a problem.
Do you have a favorite detergent or technique to that helps the scent release in the wash? I’m desperate for advice. Thank you!!

A cup of white vinegar and about half a cup of baking soda. Pinterest is full of all kinds of helpful laundry tips 🙂
Ah, and I was just going to say add some vinegar to the rinse cycle. Maybe the baking soda helps too!
I add a small amount (probably a 1/4 cup) to the fabric softener dispenser. I do that anyway now that I have a HE washer, but do find it really helps w/ any lingering perfume.

Yup, vinegar fixes EVERYTHING!
Oh, I love to smell a whiff of scent on clothes after some time has passed, but I can see how some might not be welcome after a while. In any case, I’ve never tried to remove them! The scientist in me thinks baking soda AND vinegar might create some unpleasant bubbling–a la elementary school volcanoes!
Yes, you are absolutely right about the baking soda vinegar combo -combined they bubble up like lava and that is why this recipe is recommended to help clear bunged up plug-holes and drains in an ecologically friendly way! It’s fascinating to watch and to listen to.

I don’t know if they sell Biotex Blue where you are (I’m in the Netherlands). I learned how great it works when it was recommended to me by a cat breeder and a vet on the same day. Two of my (neutered) cats were fighting and they sprayed my living room curtains! If Biotex Blue is used to prewash or mixed with normal amounts of washing powder and then put on a long wash cycle, it removes all unwanted odors. I’m not affiliated. If you can’t get it, I think the suggestion for baking soda is good. Good luck!

In Italy you find mimosas at every street corner (it’s our official flower for International Women’s Day), so this recurrence is linked to the powdery sweet of these yellow blooms.
I decided to skip the obvious reference and chose as SOTD the best perfume (IMO) a woman has ever composed for a woman: Fracas!
It is so wonderful in this dreary weather.

Yup, I will forever associate 8 March with the scent of mimosa thanks to childhood memories of growing up abroad. I’ve never seen it being sold in UK but, thankfully, there is always the gorgeous L’Eau d’Hiver which smells spookily realistic.
Oh, didn’t know l’EDH haid a mimosa note. I’ve a sample somewhere, I guess it’s time to try it!
My favorite mimosa fragrance is Une fleur de Cassie, also by FM. 🙂
To me, UFDC smells like acacia but LEDH is to mimosa (the yellow, fluffy balls variety) what Diorissimo is to lily of the valley. I only have a tiny drop left in my sample so it’ll probably be my next purchase.
I’m trying out Feminite du Bois today. I like it more and more every time I wear it. I’m usually not a huge violet fan and I get a lot of violet from this but I must be coming around to the little flower. I’ve heard the reformulation of this scent is not as good as the original but I’ll probably never get a chance to find out. Ignorance is bliss, I guess.
Ignorance is bliss. 🙂 That’s how I feel about the classic Guerlains, I’m afraid of smelling the vintage versions, ’cause I’m so happy with the current ones… Don’t want them ruined!
SOTD: Aedes de Venustas (L’Artisan Parfumeur). I’ve been on an incense kick lately. Yesterday it was Jubilation XXV, the day before Black Cashmere. Tomorrow it may be Silver Factory, who knows? 🙂
Nice picks! I am burning Papier d’Armenie again today — wish I could find a perfume that smells just like it.
I’m guessing that Guerlain’s Bois d”Armenie doesn’t work for you since I love it. What difference do you find in the perfume and the burning papier?
I am using the “limited edition” Papier d’Armenie that Francis Kurkdjian developed for the “Year of Armenia” in France (I put in quotes because I think France-Armenia year was 2006, and they’re still selling it):

It is very like the original Papier d’Armenie, but creamier & a tad sweeter, so the Guerlain is not quite right. I am addicted to the smell.

Am trying to decide between Loretta and Songes. Any thoughts or preferences? They both read as a lush big floral on me. Love them both, but as a massage therapist they’re too big for work so I’ll probably only get one.
My thoughts are that if you find them similar, Songes is cheaper 😉 On the other hand, while I haven’t tried Loretta, the bottle is GORGEOUS.
And Andy Tauer perfumes have great sillage and longevity, so they are great investiments.

I rarely buy a perfume without trying a sample over at least month. And I never buy a FB without at least sniffing it at the counter. But based on your review of Ann Gerard’s Cuir de Nacre I bought the “coffret” of all three frags in small bottles. A whim, to say the least (was I drunk?) Anyway I found Perle de Mousse and Ciel d’Opale to be a little masculine for my tastes, but I am beyond besotted with Cuir. Being, um, an iris freak, to have that burst out of the leather is a real head trip. Wish it lasted longer on the skin, but…. Thanks, NST!
Cuir de Nacre did nothing for me. And it vanished faster than after an hour.
CdN is lovely. It’s not long lasting but I’m ok with that.
I bought the coffett as well and love all three. I think that spraying instead of dabbing will really help with longevity. Transfer portions to mini decant sprayers 🙂

Today I’m wearing Maison Francisk Kurkdjian Amyris Homme. Not a big fan of it, but I was in a hurry in the morning and it was kind of a random sample grab.
Earlier this week my birthday bottle of Carner Barcelona D600 arrived. It’s beautiful!
And thanks to a Perfumed Fairy I’ll get some Le Labo Aldehyde 44 to try, it’s a last call, isn’t it?
Yes, last call. I liked it but not so much that I’ll miss it.
I only wanted to give it a try before it’s too late.
IIRC (and it’s been a few years), the Aldehyde 44 was very similar on my skin to Piguet Baghari, which is much cheaper and easier to find than the Le Labo.
Oooh, good to know; I already love Baghari, so I won’t have to chase down the Le Labo after all!

Good! It’s not excellent in my opinion but it’s really good. I get a lot of mimosa in the opening, then rooty iris mixed with raspberries.
ehhh….. that raspberry aroma-chemical isn’t my favorite, but still think I’ll give it a try.
There’s a chance I’ll be in London in early May, will definitely stop by Laduree to try a macaroon.
I liked it well enough for a FB at 25% off! It felt impossible, with the iris vacillating between ethereal to earthy/rooty throughout the day.

Congratulations to all who want to make this world a better place, and struggle to see it happen sooner rather than later. This has always been a concern among women, since we need a peaceful world for our children to live (though some great men have joined us on this ride, and that’s why I wanted to include them in my compliments).
SOTD: Montalle Chypre Vanille. (I like it, but don’t think it should cost as much as a Lutens.)
Agree — almost everything that costs more than SL is too expensive.
I am a Montale freak and haven’t tried this one yet. It sounds great!
Anyway, the Montales are such strong fragrances that they tend to last much longer in usage (one tiny spray, even if daily, would make the bottle last a lonnnnnnnnng time). I have no experience with any SL scents yet, so can’t give my opinion about price. To me, everything I’ve bought from Montale so far has been worth it! My absolute favorite is Black Aoud.

I’m just back from the LE 1932 launch thingy where champagne and macaroons were served and a lady from Chanel spent a good couple of hours talking about Chanel, ingredients they use (we all know about the fields of jasmine and rose in Grasse but turns out they also grow their own sandalwood and are in the process of making their own iris), Les Exclusifs and 1932. We got to smell a few raw materials including aldehyde which is a strange beast on its own.
When I mentioned that I was a perfume nut she also spoke a little about the Jasmine awards and Persolaise and Basenotes got a few mentions.
I’ve a sample of 1932 but I haven’t yet given it a proper try. I did get to try Fille de Berlin this week and, as expected, it’s a meh from me.
That Chanel event for 1932 sounds like fun!

Nope, on its own the aldehyde smelled really strange – simultaneously kind of fatty and metallic. Not nice but it was really cool to smell it in isolation and then to smell the No5.
Also, the raw vetiver was fantastic; I can see why Luca Turin said that it was already a complete fragrance by itself.

My sample of 1932 arrived last week, and unfortunately it does nothing for me — I can tell there are good materials in there, but the end result is borderline insipid.
Yes, we smelled iris! It was great and very close to what you get in La Pausa. Sadly, it also disappeared from the paper blotter pretty quickly.
I’m not crazy about 1932 either. It did remind me of 31RC (the slightly peppery iris was instantly obvious to my nose) but the fruit opening is not my thing and, with the addition of jasmine, the whole thing just seems a but confused. I probably wouldn’t go as far as Robin and say that it’s my least favourite in the line but it is a disappointment.
Anyone else tried the Oscar de la Renta Essential Luxuries by Calice Becker? I had heard really varying things, everything from that they sucked to that they’re wonderful. Well I finally got samples of two of them thanks to a nice Fairy Godmother at the Posse and I must say, I’m leaning more towards the “wonderful” end of the spectrum. I want to try the rest now!
I have samples of all of them but I haven’t tried any. I will and report 🙂 While sniffing at the store I really liked two but now I wouldn’t be able to tell which ones.

I’ve been trying to decide if it’s worth buying tiny decants of any of those new (and pricey) “Jul et Mad” fragrances. The sound fairly nice. Anyone fall in love with any of them?
I really-really-really like Amour de Palazzo. I’ve smelled but haven’t tried on skin the other two so I’m thinking myself if I want to spend that amount of money on samples.
I must say, the more I think about AdP the more I think “It was nice, but not so special as to justify the price.” Nothing else in the line really stood out to me at all.

I wish I could show a picture but I cannot so I will tell you that my dresser, which is a full length deal, is totally covered with bottles of FRAGRANCE. TOTALLY! I don’t know where to put my extra seconds that I’ve bought of the old Guerlains. What’s a girl to do? I can madly say ( mad as in crazy ) that I bought 90% of them blindly through reading on this site and research on Luckyscent.
Do you keep them in original boxes or without those?
Go Vertical? Maybe a second tier made from a glass (or clear acrylic) shelf along the length of the back six inches of the vanity surface would do? You can get such shelves from bathroom remodelers or hardware stores, glass and mirror dealers, and support it with something interesting like silver candlesticks or dry flower filled jars.
It would be neat to have your duplicates placed one above the other on such a shelf.

I was a guest at the Monday Mail some time ago and thought I’d give you a quick update. I’ve received and been sampling samples of, among others, OJ Tiare (just lovely, will consider a FB), Delrae Debut (very nice, but not ready to commit to it), Carillon pour un Ange (I will buy a FB probably next month), Jasmin de Nuit (nice, but not entirely sure). I also fell in love with Diorella and discovered I like a mossy note. Best of all: I ordered a bottle of Tea for Two which suddenly resurfaced in First in Fragrance. It hasn’t arrived yet and I’m getting a teeny bit worried.

You’ve just inspired me to make Tea for Two my SOTD. I bought it to add something (very!) different to my collection and it has quickly become a favorite. It’s makes me feel so cozy while I am looking outside at the snow. Spring is almost here and it will soon be time to put the bottle away for awhile so I want to enjoy it once or twice more.
Also, I just bought a FB of Debut blind when Barney’s had it on sale a couple of weeks ago. I like that it’s a grassy floral and it will probably hold up well in the summer heat (as opposed to a white floral that blooms repeatedly around my head in July), but I understand why you wouldn’t want to commit to it. I think I’d have regret if I paid full price, even though it’s clear that good materials were used and it lasts a long time.
Wandering past a Clinique counter last week, I saw that there is an EDT version of Aromatics Elixir, as well as the ‘perfume spray’. I had never noticed AE as an EDT. There was no tester for the EDT, so I could not try it.
Anyone know the differences between the two? Are there any? Is the EDT more wearable?
I could not bear to ask the SA, and be met with the usual blank look. Or worse: ‘The EDT is clean and fresh … !’
It is lighter, possibly more wearable if you want a softer smell that does’nt last for 12hrs-or more. I prefer the EDP for its deeper intense smell- with half a squirt on each wrist.
Thanks Debbie, maybe I will give it the EDT a shot. I keep coming back to AE but every time I try I never seem to be able to tame it. It is just so assertive!

Does anyone know if they have reformulated YSL Opium? I have a bottle from the early 90s, nearly empty, and would like to replace it but I have noticed they changed the bottle. Have they changed the juice too?
debbie, I’m not an Opium fan but just from the general knowledge: there is almost no chance it hasn’t been reformulated in the last 10-15 years. Sorry.
From what I have heard I think it may have been reformulated when it was repackaged. I think I recall discussion about this at the time. I bought my 30 ml bottle in the old packaging, wondering why it was so cheap. A few months later I saw the new packaging and heard rumours of reformulation. I realised then I had picked up even more of a bargain than I’d originally thought. I have never compared old with new though.
I have….and oh, the disappointment. The richness of original Opium is gone, replaced by a harsh chemical dupe. It still SEEMS like Opium, but completely hollowed out in the center. Unsettling.
What a shame. I will have to wear my old bottle for special occasions only!
Debbie, you in Australia I think? I hardly wear my pre-reformulation Opium. If we can devise a way of getting it to you by road transport, you can have it. I might decant 5 mls as a keepsake. I am kittyc on MUA if you would like to get in touch. I would love my Opium to go to a good home.
Hi Annemarie, yes I am in Tassie. Thank you for your lovely idea but I would be worried that a year or two down the track you may suddenly need to wear Opium and then remember you have given it away! Trust me I have done this! Often! Then spent days trying to find my bottle. But thank you.

I’ve been using Carmex Healing Salve on my cuticles (winter at high altitude calls for more than hand cream). The last ingredient listed is vanillin. It smells very strongly of camphor and eucalyptus at first, but dries down to leave a faint vanilla scent.
I am not at a high altitude, but have really dry hands and that Carmex sounds good. I shall definnitely get some. I have a small bottle of Anais Anais edp that I put on occasionally for old times’ sake – it came out just after I got married, and I spent a happy summer that year wearing it.
Good Morning! Today I’ll be testing my new decant of Chanel 1932 which arrived yesterday along with SL La Fille de Berlin. I tried Berlin last night and really (surpisingly) liked it. Since I don’t have many roses in my collection, this one might fit the bill.
I’m hopeful for Chanel 1932 despite lackluster reviews. I actually liked Beige and find that it’s a good office scent, so I think 1932 will fall in that same bucket of being pretty and wearable. Not sure that will earn FB status, but hoping I’ll enjoy my decant well enough.

So my big news, I guess, is I’m no longer seeing the fella I have been these past months. I ended it this week. I will miss him, but I decided it was time to make myself available for a better fit. So, you all are going to have to suffer through more “first date” entries from me–eventually, anyway! Not quite ready to try again. I could use some time to adjust to my own life again.
No scent, yet, but there are hints of spring, so I’m tempted to dig out something light and fresh-feeling (in the good way)!

Sotd sampling Brin de Réglisse by Hermes, I smell salty tomato and licorice! *barfs*! Never again! I dig licorice but that one is for the birds!
Oh, that sounds kinda awful! I like some licorice/anice notes, too, but with salted tomato sounds bad. Then again, I’ve never really understood salting tomatoes. Or salt notes in perfume.
As for the not settling–it’s tough! I don’t want to be alone, and this fella adores me (his word). How do you say no to that?! But, I never stopped thinking about moving on. I never found myself wanting it to continue forever–and that’s what I’m looking for, my forever person. So, I made the difficult choice. I know it was right, but I’m still finding it to be work to move on.

Yes, I feel pretty confident that I made the right choice. Thing is, I told him after the third date that I didn’t think it could be anything more than friendship and company. He asked me to give it a chance to develop into more, and since I liked him well enough, I said yes. But now, several months down the road, I *still* feel that there won’t be more than friendship and company. I will miss his friendship and his company (as I can’t really imagine us finding a way to stay in touch without him holding out hopes I will change my mind). But as I said above, I want to be available for my forever partner. So, back to singledom I go!

That’s good to hear! I worry that my natural tendency to share might feel like TMI a lot of the time! But I agree, I like hearing about other people, and so I don’t mind sharing about myself. And I can *usually* manage to find a perfume-related connection! (I really do try to stay on topic, but sometimes I just can’t help myself!)

Jonette, thank you for the encouraging words! I’m still trying to find that balance between contentedness and seeking happiness. If I could be as successful in finding a partner as I have been with my house, I will be blissful, indeed. I have such gratitude in having purchased my own home this year, and I think in a weird way, it has given me the strength to find that same sense of gratitude for a partner. Carrying the analogy probably too far, my house isn’t perfect, but it suits me so well. I feel comfortable and in my place. I want that in a relationship, too.
Its actually very nice to know more about everyone commenting – I mean I don’t think a full life history is wanted but some personal details gives a lot more dimension to it all. Ultimately we are all more than user names and scent preferences – and if it was all reduced to that I think it would be really dull – and also chronically superficial. I do think the TMI complaint amusing – on one level – but I also think the problem is usually the complainer’s who clearly ‘cannot take very much reality’.

I’ve been working my way through decants of Histoires de Parfums selections lately. So far I’ve become most fond of Mata Hari (1876) and (I hate to admit it on this Women’s Day anniversary) Marquis de Sade (1740), so much so I’ve ordered a FB of the latter, despite my disgust at the man it is named for. If anyone ever asks me what it is I will give only the date name and not his. I am visiting Galveston this weekend and found miniatures of Fracas and Mitsouko in an antique shop. I have no idea how old they are but they smell good and look very cute.
I feel the same way about 1740. Shame they had to use that name.
I’m not generally squeamish about names (hey, I love Sushi Imperiale!) but agree that the very nice 1740 is unfortunate to be associated with such a person. I think 1740 would make a great layering scent, so I plan to experiment with it that way.

I’ve had a wonderful perfume week, wearing some of my new scents (I usually spend three days in a row with a new scent, so more reports next week).
The past few days, I’ve been wearing Habit Rouge edp, which calls to mind/nose the way Shalimar smelled back in the early 50’s. I love it so much, I’m thinking of buying an extra bottle to feel secure, in case they reformulate it.
Today, I’m wearing Kenzo Jungle L’elephant. I became intrigued with reviews on various sites, which were definitely extreme splits between hate and love. The positive reviews made me so curious.
When I was at a favorite perfume boutique recently, I sampled it and my friend immediately said, “Oh, that’s you!” And it is (on some diva days). I have never used a perfume to alter mood, but this is one I will put to use if I’m in need of a lift. It makes me happy, no… it makes me euphoric! It’s powerful (but then, most of my favorites are strong), so one little spritz is all I need for most the day. It makes me think of Scotch whiskey, or cognac and also of Christmas.
Does anyone know an online shop here in Europe (or that will ship to Europe) that still carries Cartier Le Baiser du Dragon pure perfume? (I won’t use ebay).
I managed to get a discounted tester, but still want a fb new in the box.
I wrote to Cartier and they told me that it’s been discontinued, but that it’s been relaunched in the edp version only as an exclusive to Harrod’s department store in London, and can only be purchased there in person.
Or maybe some list member will spot a lonely bottle on a shelf in their local perfume shop?
I would e-mail Harrod’s and verify they have it, and ask if they could find some way to mail it to you; they may be able to bend the rules a bit.

Thanks for your suggestion, but they’ve only got the edp and I would prefer to get the pure perfume. The Cartier boutique here said they could try to special order for me from Harrod’s. I have friends who regularly go to London, so I could have them pick up a fb there, but I’d so much prefer to get the pure perfume.
Online discounters seem to be offering an suspicious number of unboxed testers. I managed to buy one (in a brown “Cartier” box.) It smells good, but even though it claims to be the pure perfume, the little decant I bought from STC smells better.
My search continues!
I wonder if anyone noticed how the villainess on The Bachelor, on more than one occasion, sprayed herself liberally with perfume before going to meet him. I slowed down the film to see what it was and determined that it was Bulgari Omnia. I could not see the colour enough to conclude if it was a flanker or not.

Being very visual, I always thought it was an homage to Chanel No. 5 but i was wrong. I Saw the Figure 5 in Gold (1928) by American watercolorist Charles Demuth is one of eight abstract portraits of the artist’s friends. The U.S. Postal Office Service commemorates 12 important modern artists and their works 100 years after the groundbreaking Armory Show opened in New York in 1913. The original is on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

I used to collect stamps ages ago (I don’t anymore because I now collect other things…like perfumes) and really enjoy seeing and using new issue stamps.
