The Fragrance Foundation of Germany has announced the finalists for the 2013 Duftstars awards, the German version of the Fifi awards for best fragrances. The nominees are:

Women's Prestige

Balenciaga Florabotanica
Chanel Coco Noir
Elie Saab Le Parfum (Eau de Toilette)
Gucci Première
Lancôme La Vie Est Belle

Men's Prestige

Chanel Allure Homme Sport Eau Extreme
Christian Dior Eau Sauvage Le Parfum
Giorgio Armani Acqua di Gio Essenza
Issey Miyake L'Eau d'Issey Pour Homme Sport
Prada Luna Rossa

Women's Exclusive

Christian Dior Oud Ispahan
Giorgio Armani Privé Figuier Eden

J.F. Schwarzlose Berlin Treffpunkt 8 Uhr
Ulrich Lang Lightscape

Men's Exclusive

Aramis Calligraphy
Etro Greene Street
J.F. Schwarzlose Berlin Trance
Tom Ford Noir
Viktor & Rolf Spicebomb

The distinction between "Exclusive" and "Prestige", by the way, is determined only by how many stores carry the fragrance.

You can find the nominations for other categories, including Lifestyle and Classic, at the German Fragrance Foundation website.

The awards ceremony will be held on 17 May in Berlin.

There sure are a lot of people on that jury. Not sure these nominees are the most inspiring choices though. It’s funny, a friend was just talking about how you can tell by the movies we watch that Americans are a bunch of grizzled cynics but the Europeans just want to have a good time. (The comment specifically referred to Cesar nominated Rust & Bone.) I don’t know how true that is, but it sort of seemed that way when I lived in Germany for a stretch during my early 20s. Anyway, that idea also seems borne out by the slate of nominees here.

I don’t know…better wait & see. Usually there is much agreement in the finalist lists of the various Fifi countries, except that each country might add an “extra” because it was made there (hence the J.F. Schwarzlose scents above). And usually the winners are not fragrances that perfumistas find inspiring 🙂

All this makes me want to do is hunt down those J.F. Schwarzlose Berlin fragrances, which will probably never happen. I’m surprised by Florabotanica. That was one of the worst perfumes of the year, for me, and several others I know.

Not sure it was any worse than Coco Noir 🙂
