Lazy weekend poll ~ Star Wars!

Posted by Robin on 26 May 2012 193 Comments

Leaf No Man Behind

In honor of the 35th Anniversary of Star Wars, a Star Wars themed poll.

Do what you like with it! Scent a character from the movies, tell us something about Star Wars (your favorite of the movies? why you've never seen any of them? why you've seen all of them 4 times?), or just tell us what fragrance you're wearing today.

p.s. for the true nerds among us, check out An Analysis of Blaster Fire in Star Wars over at Wired.

    Good afternoon fragrant friends!
Here in Poland we celebrate Mother’s Day today, so my mummy get’s treated like a queen during this day. It made me so joyful when I saw how happy she was when she saw she got Prada Candy decant she dreamed about for a while.
This week I’m proud of myself too! Not only I nailed my exam but I accomplished the very first split in my perfume career! It was such a fun time, really. And I got Annick Goutal Nuit Etoilee for my collection.
I’m in Guerlain Cologne du 68 now but am considering changing it for something that would suit night mood better – I’m off to a concert in a few hours.
How are you all doing? Tell me!
    Enjoy the weekend 🙂

Lucas, what a wonderful week! You’ve done wonderful things for others and invested in yourself, as well. What kind of concert are you going to?

It’s our Memorial Day here, so I also have Monday off and am relishing the prospect of a long weekend. It’s going to be hot and humid, which is a good excuse to mostly stay indoors and try some new perfume samples. 🙂

Speaking now I’m sure that there will be more splits with me in the future. It was a concert of band named “Bajm”, they’re very well known polish group, they sing ballads but also some rock music with a kick. They also happen to concert in the US sometimes.

Yes, that’s a wonderful excuse to jump into the sea of samples. I’m planning to order a discovery set from Parfum d’Empire, it has a great value for 13 new perfume to try. Enjoy your sampling time 🙂

Nothing like a late spring concert! The PdE sample set sounds great. Their Cuir Ottoman is one of my winter favs, so I’ve been meaning to try more from that brand. Let me know which ones you like!

I like when the band shows some different music styles at the concert. Cuir Ottoman you say? From Pd’E I tried Iskander and Equistrius so far, both very good – these two encouraged me for testing them again and trying others from the line.

Hey there! Congrats on your exam! I’m trying to relax on a weekend getaway and I’m finding it’s really hard to do that. Have fun at your concert. Right now we are trying to decide where to eat dinner. I feel like all I’m doing is eating. So much for the diet. This morning’s breakfast of Apple Strudel French Toast probably had 2 days worth of calories in it. But boy was it good.

I’m sure you’ll find a good way to rest and laze. Thanks, the concert was great! You seem to like eating out. My family barely eats out, we go to a restaurant on a special occasion like birthday etc. That strudel sounds delicious, can I have a bite?

Actually I like my own cooking but that’s not an option when I’m not at home. Hubby does not cook so when he wants to treat me he takes me out. I’d love to have him cook me a meal sometime but toast and water is not that tempting.

The decanting was the toughest part, I spilled some of the precious juice, luckily not much. Practise makes perfect!

Good evening, Lucas. It sounds like you’re having a great week and well done on your exams! I’m glad you’re mother is happy with Prada Candy. Hope you enoyed the concert. It’s been very hot here in London. Summer has arrived early!

Thanks! I’m very happy that this exam is another thing I can mark as done 🙂 I had no doubts about mummy liking Prada Candy. She fell in love with it with the first try months ago. Since then she really talked a lot about it so it was an ideal present for her.
The concert was great, I had a great time last night! It’s really warm here too, but last week it was really hot – I like the medium warmth better.

Very many congratulations on your exam and your decant, Lucas!

Hope you enjoy your concert and that it’s not as hot in Poland as it is here in the UK. It is amazing – we are breaking temperature records for this time of year, and I am wearing all my old citrussy colognes. Particularly liking PdeN’s Eau d’Ete, which lasts a long time for a fresh “cologne” and suits girls and boys.

I’m very happy with both the exam and my share of Nuit Etoilee. The blue bottle is so beautiful – it looks even better in real than in press materials.

Thanks, that concert was really cool! And yes, we don’t have these high temperatures now, it’s pleasantly warm, not to hot, not to cold either. Those classic citrus colognes are a perfect thing for those hot and sunny days. Have a great Sunday!

Well. I’m not a big fan of the Star Wars series. Perhaps Bvlgari Black for Darth Vader? I’m not entirely familiar with the character, so I’m just going with a fragrance that popped into my head.
OT: Someone I knew years ago after the first Star Wars came out was one of the set and costume designers, and he showed me Darth Vader’s headwear, which was made out of a football helmet.
    My SOTD is OJ Frangipani.

I’m not a massive fan of Star Wars, I’ve seen a few of them but somehow never really got attached to the series.

I went to my local Debenhams in search of Infusuion d’Iris Absolue but they don’t have it here. So I headed to the Guerlain counter, gave myself a generous spritzing of Chant d’Arômes and then spotted a bottle of the new AA Lys Soleia. The top notes didn’t grab me (indistinct fresh florals) so I showed the paper blotter into my bag and swiftly forgot all about until this morning. Gave it another sniff and it actually smells of lilies so I might have to re-visit and do a proper skin/fabric test.

No SOTD yet; I’ve been feeling very indecisive all day. It’s pretty hot here so I might pull out my sample of Philosykos…or Fico di Amalfi, or Osmanthe Yunnan….gah!

    Do I like it????

Uh, I’m sitting here staring at my bookshelf of ~60 or 70 Star Wars novels. I also have a massive Star Wars comics collection.

I’m a former administrator of Wookieepedia (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page). I have a Star Wars Christmas tree. Yeah.

It’s a hard choice, but I’d say my favorite of the movies is The Empire Strikes Back, although I dearly love Return of the Jedi as well.

I posted this on here a while back when Jessica reviewed Andy Tauer’s Pentachord White, but I think that perfume perfectly suits Princess Leia. A white, futuristic, feminine perfume.

I reckon Han Solo might wear Lonestar Memories, actually. Maybe I should do a whole “scenting Star Wars series.”

Toss-up between Comme des Garcons #71 and Lolita Lempicka au Masculine for Darth Vader. Han Solo wears Brut and Chewie wears something by Lush. Obi-Wan Kenobi wears Eau Savage, Luke wears L’Air du Desert Marocain when he’s feeling nostalgic but usually he wears Dior Homme. C3PO can wear Bulgari Black because I still think smells like baby powder. Lando purchased Songe d’un Bois d’Ete unsniffed but it hasn’t arrived yet.

My most memorable Star Wars experience was seeing The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi dubbed into German at a theater in Vienna. I could only actually understand perhaps 1/3 of the dialog, but I had seen each movie 3 or 4 times, so I knew the scripts practically by heart anyway. It was rather surreal, though, to hear completely different voices coming out of the familiar faces.

I saw the original Star Wars the night it opened in the old Roxy Theater in Tacoma, Washington with a bunch of my friends (Yes, I am 109 years old). It was thrilling. Ahh, Harrison Ford in his prime. Sigh. I know it seems odd now, but Star Wars mania had not yet started and the theater was only half full!

Six of us stacked like cordwood across the bed in the back of a ‘custom’ van (you know the kind, shag on the walls and floor), backed into the space with the back doors thrown open so we could watch, lol. Never was a Star Wars fan. On my weekend getaway I was hoping to find a new fragrance but so far no luck. I found a little shop with about 4 L’Artisan fragrances and tried Voleur de Roses. I thought it was okay at first but I have somehow morphed into smelling like a wet, moldy basement. And not in a good way. It has very little sillage but when I sniff my wrist I smell like something that’s been packed away for years. It’s that musty smell that seems to permeate every antique store. Nope, it’s not doing it for me. Must go scrub.

Ha! First of all, anyone who’s *only* seen the Star Wars movies 4 times isn’t a real fan. That’s just a dabbler, my friend. You have to clock in dozens of viewings to even be considered for hard-core fan status. Also, you must be able to repeat the dialogue of Han Solo’s exchange with Greedo in the cantina word for word. Otherwise, get to the back of the line!

As for perfumes, I just wanted to let all of you know that there’s a seller on Etsy who makes Star Wars perfumes. Basically, there is a scent for each of the major characters. I haven’t gotten around to purchasing any of them yet, but the descriptions sound promising

Songes is another beauty in this weather as is Lutens’ Chergui.
It is hot all of a sudden isn’t it. Most people seem to be pleased. Me, I prefer the colder, rainier weather, although I know I am very much in a minority on this one.

Must go to Bijenkorf to try the Chergui!! I saw it and it kept pulling me but I didn’t try it.

Yes, disgustingly hot. Doesn’t help that my building has been built with a protective layer of window outside the windows – the sun shines in and heats the air, so if you open any windows to that, it feels like someone put on a fire 🙁

And yes, you can tell when people are happy with the weather here – they are all practically naked 😛

          Thanks for the tip!

SOTD is Rubj. I think Rubj EDP would suit Leia perfectly in the third film when she’s wearing that gold bikini thing.
I enjoyed the first three SW films, but I’ve avoided seeing the new ones…
Perfume mishap of the day: dropping my vial of Rubj extrait and spilling it all over my bathroom floor. 🙁

Like Aparatchick, I saw Star Wars when it first came out. My friends and I loved it so much that we went back the next day to see it again! Sort of lost touch with it after the second one. Maybe I’ll catch up with the series when I retire someday…

This morning I’m testing Duchaufour’s L’AP Mechant Loup. It’s the earliest perfume that is credited to him. LT said it smelled like wet dog to him; I don’t get that at all. I get an pleasantly minty male cologne effect underlaid with what might be a hint of fur. It smells good as a relatively subtle masculine. I might wear it on the right fall day.

I love Mechant Loup and think women can bring it off too. It’s better, though, in cool weather. I happened to be shopping at Neiman-Marcus with a French professor friend and the SA (typically) told me it was masculine and my friend Pierre said “No no, it’s perfect for you, buy the BIG (“beeeg”) bottle”!) so I did!

I enjoyed watching the original trilogy, but they didn’t really stick all that much, and I can’t remember how many scenes play out even though I rewatched them recently. Maybe it’s because I have no nostalgic connection to them. So my dislike for the prequels can be called disproportionate, but it cant be helped – they really irk me.

SOTD (and yesterday, and the day before that) is Grisens by Phaedon – a skinscent, finally! A bit sweaty perhaps, but no musk I’ve tried has reminded me of skin. Incense and sandalwood seem to do the trick.

The “first” three were bright-eyed and innocent – in space, yet down to earth! Ep I was alright, I suppose, and I liked this one the best when I was a kid. Ep II and III… well. It’s Anakin. He’s not okay. Not okay at all D: Gosh, it’s all coming back to me now.

But I understand why kids would prefer the new ones; fast-paced and visually impressive – they’re certainly products of their time!

Hmm…. I saw the first couple of movies with a young Harrison Ford, but can’t say that I’m a fan. I’m more of a Pride and Prejudice kind of girl.

We used to call the man who owned the first company that I worked for in the Thoroughbred industry, Jabba the Hutt. He looked like him and he was seriously evil. So my lone contribution to scenting the characters would be to put Jabba in Dzing.

SOTD is lavender e.o. on my temples to get rid of a headache. I had meant to test PdE Equistrius – maybe later.

Equistrius – I tried that on Wednesday when I visited my niche perfume boutique to pick up the bottle of Nuit Etoilee. It smelled great! I also smelled Iskander at the same time and it seemed to appeal better to me. Anyway, I have to order a full discovery set from Parfum d’Empire. The description of others sound great, especially Azemour Les Orangers. I’m sure at least one from Pd’E will go onto my must-have list.

SOTD is Sonoma Scent Studio Fig Tree. I was finally able to get the spray top on my 2.5ml sample to work. I love it, but not for the hot, humid, thunderstorm-threatening weather we’re having right now. I will bring this out again in the fall.

As for Star Wars, I have a 12 year old nephew who is absolutely obsessed. He has an extensive collection of Star Wars Lego sets. Whenever he talks about Star Wars, I tune out because it usually ends up sounding like the adults in a Peanuts cartoon.

Put me in the cane waving section. I saw these in the theater, as they came out. Star Wars was. . .so amazing, so different from anything I’d seen.

I grew up with these films. My feelings about the characters grew up, just as I did. In the first film, I loved Luke, thought he was just dreamy. Scent? Hmmm. Something commonly available as he was on a backwater planet, aspirational, he’d want to seem very manly and worldly. Drakkar Noir. Halston Z14. At the time of the first film, I could not stand Han Solo–so brash, so selfish, so rude. I’d put him in whatever he could scrounge from his latest lady’s dressing table (like someone did for Jack Sparrow in a poll!), and then off on the run. Eau de Navigateur, scent of exotic trade routes and pirates, sounds perfect to me.

As I grew up, my feelings about the characters changed, just as my feelings changed about Ashley and Rhett in Gone With the Wind. Luke was a boy, an idealist, and sweet, but Han was a man, a survivor. Amazing archetypes, amazing films. I cannot believe they are 35 years old. Wow, now I do feel old 😀

I think I’ll bust out my DVD series and celebrate. BTW: ‘fumes for other characters? Chewbacca–PG’s L’Ombre Fauve, Obi Wan–Guerlain’s Vetiver, Princess Leia–Mitsouko, Lando Calrissian–Habit Rouge, Emperor Palpatine Xerjoff’s Iriss or Richwood, and Darth Vader? Cannot imagine him choosing a fragrance in that suit, and cannot imagine him bothering with fragrance. Thanks for the fun distraction! This has been fun. Hope you have a great weekend.

Obi Wan is HAWT! Sir Alec Guinness is infinitely watchable, and I’ve loved so many things he’s done. He added quiet elegance to everything he touched. Ewan McGregor had tough shoes to fill in the prequels…but has his own charm as well 😀

I felt exactly the same way! When I saw the first movie, it was Luke I liked and not Han. I didn’t hate him, but he didn’t leave any real impression on me. Then, before “Empire” came out, I was visited by our old friend, Puberty. Suddenly, I started looking at Han (Harrison Ford) with completely new eyes.

I remember so clearly reading a magazine that had promo shots for the upcoming second movie. I was sitting at one of the long wooden tables we had in our school library and my eyes popped from my head. I thought, whoa, was Han always that attractive? I don’t remember him looking that good a couple of years ago!

Yes, Harrison Ford is single-handedly responsible for jump-starting my hormones and thrusting me into adolescence.

Star Wars geekery is very much my husband’s department, so I’ll just say that I’m debating whether to wear Eau de Rochas to a BBQ this afternoon or to perhaps try out Philosykos or Fils de Dieu instead.

After the successes of Manoumalia and Monyette, I’m striking out big time with my latest sample order. Rubj EDT and Timbuktu were full-on scrubbers; PdN Fig Tea smelled like those fruity fluoride-gel treatments I used to get at the dentist’s; Azemour and Mythique were okay, but I think I can live without them. And those were the two that I was sure I’d love. Fils de Dieu, Bijou Romantique, and Drama Nuui are the only ones left to try.

Obi Wan should wear Tam Dao I think and maybe CP3O needs some Penhaligon’s Sartorial!

I saw them when they first came out but never was much of a fan. I’m too much of a Trekkie to fall for this.

Today’s scent: Nez a Nez Immortelle Marilyn. Fabulous. I’ve kept spraying it at the local perfume mecca and ordered a generous-sized decant. It’s fabulous in Houston hot weather and I foresee a FB in my future. Not a bit sweet–unlike the rest of the line.

Haven’t tried Immotelle Marilyn yet, and will have to do so. I live in the same area, and have to choose scents that fare well in the humid heat. I’m trying PdE’s Eau Suave today, mostly indoors, and so far, so good. A rosy chypre, with saffron, but very light and herbaceous. Have you seen that Frederick Malle is in Houston at Sak’s in the Galleria? I was delighted. Have a great weekend.

I’m another one who saw it when it opened, my friends and I loved it! My guy at the time loved my Rive Gauche, so I remember having that on. The girlfriends were in Tatiana, Cabochard and Le de Givenchy. The bf had on Pierre Cardin, and I’m sorry to say I don’t remember what the other guys wore. It was a crowded movie theater and noone looked at us twice, which makes me giggle when I try to picture the reactions that would no doubt happen now! I’ve picked all vintage scents in honor of those times of wearing it boldly and proudly:

Hans – Brut all the way. Affordable, easily accessible, and the chicks all dug it. That it also was handy to emergency blast most of a hard night’s funk away on him, or even Chewy, was a major plus.

Leia – Cristalle Edt. Since she was surrounded by all things male most of the time, it helped get across the point that the girl could cut you and be gone before you even knew you were bleeding out. For ‘special’ evenings it would be Fidgi – green, a bit spicy and quite lush. It’d be transporting and inspiring for her since she didnt exactly get much garden time or island time.

Luke – Canoe guy who’d secretly aspired to Eau Savage. A bit of similar sibling leanings on that one, maybe?

Darth Vader – In the first couple it just had to be Drakkar Noir(released a couple years later than the first movie, but hey it was bespoke first 😉 ), because it could easily obliterate everything in it’s path. Also, like Fidgi, by Guy LaRoche!

Obi Wan – Old Spice. Smooth yet spicy, and somehow comforting in a paternal way to most of the younger set.

Lando – Halston z-14. Because it was just so fine, like him.

Chewy – Hai Karate. Because it irritated Hans, and girl wookies liked to imitate the moves from the commercial with him. Rawr.

Thanks for letting us indulge in some silly, fun-filled nostalgia, Robin!

Whilst true Star Wars geekery is my husband’s department, I really do enjoy the films- with the exception of Hayden Christiensen as Anakin in Eps 2&3. He was so wooden it was awful to watch, especially in scenes with Natalie Portman who is wonderful always.
    In terms of scent:
Luke- some aspirational fragrance, to put hair on his chest maybe Aramis or Halston Z-14
    Leia- Kelly Caleche
    Han- Knize Ten
Lando- He’s so smooth he’s slippery so something like Joop! In doses to stun a rhino.
    Jabba- Kingdom (cumin,cumin,Cumin!)
Darth Vader- as a young man, he wore Lonestar Memories but as an old man he wears Guerlain Vetiver if anything
    Emperor Palpatine- Grey Vetiver

I’v only ever seen one: it was the first of the ones that came out sometime in the last 10 years! It had the whole beginning of Luke as a child, etc. Nathalie Portman was the princess.
I’m intrigued by what Yoda would wear. Something heavy in tradition or something avant-garde? Guerlain or Comme de Garcons, or perhaps an Andy Tauer?

I also had a question: I’m heading off to Greece in 2 weeks. I’ll be spending most of my time in Ithaca, but also two days in Athens. I have visited some sites which have suggested perfume shops in Athens but I was wondering whether there is likely to be anything interesting on the island. Also, does anyone know if Bottega Veneta is available there? (It is not available in S.A.)

Just bought Versace L’Homme for my bf on a blindbuy (our anniversary tomorrow) AND it is simply OMGSEX.

Also, he wanted me to add:

When Han shot first, Greedo smelled like Dior Homme.

    I love my guy <3

ION my SOTD was Amouage Memoir (sample please don't finish!!), and then in the evening a perfume I designed on some site which turned out to not be ME. And now I'm wearing Versace L'Homme *wiggles eyebrows*

Longtime reader delurking!!! I had to add my two cents on his one. Since we are on a Star Wars theme, I just have to say – everybody has to read – or reread, as the case may be, the NST review (and responses) . of Star Wars “Slave Leia” and “Eau Lando” from a while back. It’s as funny now as it was when I first read it. ‘Never gets old! Something like “Fawlty Towers” (…another cast I’d love to see ‘fragranced’, at some point). BTW – I am loving Sartorial for C3P0…and loving Ninfeo Meo for me today. Happy Saturday, all!

I love it when a lurker de-cloaks (not to mix my sci-fi metaphors….). Welcome!

I’m sitting here on the family room sofa and just looked up to see that my husband is watching the original movie – apparently there’s a Star Wars marathon on cable!

Gris Clair, Lourve, Clair de Musc, Borneo, Cellophane, and Roouse, + Chypre Rouge. I’m in love. I am awaiting Costume National’s Scent 21, anybody ever smelled? Also I am getting a classic Balmain. I just love Ambergis

ok ok–that is not all. Lando wears Dirty English and CP30 wears Grey Flannel and R2D2 wears Chrome. I do think Hans would have worn Drakkar Noir and Luke would have worn Polo, but now they are probably more into more sophisticated and more equal fare. I will have to think about it. I think Leia was wearing Matsumi but now she sticks to Boucheron or a flanker. Darth Vader? Oh Jade East all the way.

Hate the new ones, but I loved the original SW series, which I, too, saw in the theater, albeit as a kid (no cane yet, just lots of Advil!). Wonder what happened to my Star Wars trading cards? As far as scent, I can’t beat the fantastic suggestions above, but I think Yoda would exude SL ISM from his mist-laden swamp.

I think now, whenever I am looking at perfumes, I will ask myself, “What would Princess Leia wear?” WWPLW shall be my guide. 😛

So what would she wear? I haven’t smelled the ones that others have mentioned for her, except Mitsouko. I think she could wear Shalimar myself. I keep thinking of orientals for Leia, something rich and maybe a little incensy.

As for Chewie, I think he could pull off MKK or maybe Boadicea the Victorious Complex (ok I haven’t actually smelled either of these, I’m just going by what I’ve read).

I think Han could wear Fahrenheit. Luke I’m not sure.. haven’t thought of one for him.

In other news, I scored a bottle of Bulgari Omnia (the original!) today at a discount perfume shop (on Harwin, for any fellow Houstonians here). I got a sample from ebay a few days ago, and I was really excited to see it in a shop. I thought the price was good, so I had to have it. So that’s what I’m wearing now. I didn’t even get it home before putting it on.. I opened it in the car.

Saw the original in the theater and was dazzled by the special effects – we’d never seen anything like that before! From the minute he came on the screen, it was always Chewy for me. Those other guys looked . . . hairless. So I will fantasize about Chewy in M7, or, alternatively, Smell Bent’s Lumberjack Werewolf.

Han Solo would definitely Lonestar Memories!

And I am wearing Le Labo’s Bergamote today. I’m never sure if I like it, so I always only ever have a sample of it lying around. It’s a little too floral and ambery, I would prefer something sharper and more citrussy. But I always enjoy it when I do wear it, though never want a full bottle.

Does anyone know if a perfume exists using rhodadendron as a note?

I wanted to say something like Chanel 19 or Gardenia, she’s so chilly and take no prisoners, but she DOES spend the entire first movie braless and in that drape. So I’ll take your point. 🙂

This is cleaarly not my category, but I will throw my hat in the ring with a C3P0 suggestion: No. 88 by Czech & Speake.
I was out trolling for scents today. Love Prada d’Iris Absolu and the new Hermes Voyage. A Sunday FB kind of love. And, what might be my Chanel 5 “glass slipper” – a limited edition body mist. I’ve always loved it more than it loved me.
Barneys had AdV. Gorgeous bottle. Lovely hue and heft. The frag? If you can’t say something nice…and I can’t.
