Perfume in the magazines, May 2012: Allure, Details, GQ & Saveur

Posted by Robin on 1 May 2012 7 Comments

Allure May 2012Saveur May 2012

Perfume coverage in the May issues of Allure, Details, GQ and Saveur; please comment on any fragrance-related coverage you’ve seen in other fashion & beauty magazines:

Allure

Cover: Heidi Klum

Scent strips: Ralph Lauren Big Pony, Prada Candy, Issey Miyake L'Eau d'Issey Florale & L'Eau d'Issey Pour Homme Sport.

Editorial coverage: Cover Look mentions Heidi Klum's new fragrance, Shine (p. 46). The Beauty Reporter section includes Jason Wu's Orchid Rain Candle in the Editor's Favorites (p. 52), a “Smell This” feature (random passersby comment on a scent) on Swarovski Aura (p. 56) and an explanation of why Guerlain Muguet costs $575 (p. 73). Raw Power by Frédéric Malle talks about synthetic materials (coumarin, aldehydes, hedione, etc). The Descendants is an article about second and third (and so on) generation perfumers (Céline Ellena, Patricia de Nicolaï, etc; p. 252).

Details

Cover: Chris Evans…again

Scent strips: Armani Acqua di Gio; Issey Miyake L’Eau D’Issey Pour Homme  & L’Eau D’Issey Pour Homme Sport.

Editorial coverage:  Warning: Touching this receipt can make you fat; it’s coated in obesogens, chemicals that can program your body to put on weight, no matter how much you exercise or how well you eat. And they lurk in some very surprising places. (pps. 67-68; Perfume can make you gain weight…who knew?)

My Grooming Ritual: Justin Timberlake (p. 64; who cares?)

GQ

Cover: Derrick Rose (who?)

Scent strips: Giorgio Armani Code; Givenchy Play Sport and Play Intense.

Editorial coverage: None.

Saveur

Cover: Baguettes!

Scent strips: possibilities abound (Corsican chestnut flour tart, Russian pumpernickel, Senegalese okra and seafood stew) but sorry, no scent strips.

Editorial coverage: Smoky and Sweet, Thailand’s most fascinating dessert ingredient is incense (pps. 11-12, smoked coconut cheesecake recipe included).

Note: As always, thanks to Kevin — I read Allure, he read all the rest!

May 2012 “More- for Women of Style and Substance”
has a full page, heavier paper ad for J’adore Dior — the top first page is a lovely photo of their Model in a golden dress and the unique long necked bottle (Bloomingdale’s Dior.com noted in the corner) and the flipover side is a full page pic of the bottle, again, and a full page length inch and a half scent strip with tiny print listing the five available J’adore concentrations from 110.00 to 50.00. Very potent scent strip! Delightful. Best ad in the book!
Also an article on Cheap Thrills showing L’eau de Chloe shower gel and a 6 rollerball set from Tokyo Milk called Moonflower, an assortment of florals for mix and match. Also a Cos Bar soap in Orange Citrus, a roller ball of Roberto Cavalli, and a Eau de Trini Hair Perfume to make “dirty strands smell clean.” Somehow that last one doesn’t appeal to me. And I have doubts about the value offered for items that are in such tiny sizes and amounts.
Also an add for Glade room scents. And ads for expensive jewelry!
    Interesting demographic for them.

in may issue of marie claire (zooey deschanel on cover) there are the following scent strips:
    dk cashmere mist
    prada infusion d’iris
    l’eau de chloe
    flower by kenzo
    elie saab

there is a feature of the 2012 prix d’excellence beauty awards and chanel 19 poudre was voted best fragrance. Prada candy was voted best concept and burberry body intense was voted best bottle (really??)
they also mention in 101 ideas that frederic malle is teaming up with pierre hardy travel cases that will be $285 each (but doesn’t say anything about how many mls these will be).

last, but not least, there is an ad of “liquid assets” – ck eternity summer, guerlain aa lys soleia, swarovski aura, acqua di parma colonia assoluta special edition, and fendi it-color – which you can win by going to marieclaire.com/freeforyou

a pretty good issue for us perfumistas!

    New York Times 05-02-12

The “noses” behind celebuscents are getting in on the action and in the limelight with their own niche line of fragrances.

That’s ok, doesn’t hurt to have it here too — not everyone sees the Twitter feed.
