RMS Titanic Legacy 1912 Titanic ~ new perfume

Posted by Robin on 27 March 2012 40 Comments

RMS Titanic Legacy 1912 Titanic

RMS Titanic, the "official salvor-in-possession of the Titanic", has launched Legacy 1912 Titanic, a new perfume for women:

Legacy 1912 is based upon the perfume oils developed by German-born chemist Adolphe Saalfeld. He was traveling on the Titanic to New York in hopes of developing a new line of scents. He survived the sinking, but his samples were lost. Found 2-1/2 miles beneath the ocean's surface, many samples amazingly still contained their oils.

...Legacy 1912 eau de parfum surrounds you with the fragrance of delicate lemon and nerolis, alongside blushing rose and warm, sheer amber.

RMS Titanic Legacy 1912 Titanic is available at QVC, in 75 ml Eau de Parfum for $69.

LOL! It is sort of odd how romantic the Titanic has become. All from the movie, I guess?

Just when you think a perfume inspired by plumber’s crack was bad….

Oh dear! Have to say would rather have this. But with THAT juice (I do like the Fat Electrician scent, & hope that’s what we’re talking about)

Yes, it’s the one I was talking about, lol. My only thought is that no one ever died from plumber’s crack, but that is certainly an assumption on my part. Pun intended. 😛

Well, this made me curious to see if this man really was a perfumer or if this was just some sort of marketing ploy for the release of the 3D version of the movie. In case anyone else is curious too, he was real and the proceeds from the sale of the perfume are going to fund a documentary on his life. http://www.encyclopedia-titanica.org/adolphe-saalfeld-post-disaster.html

He was real, but do note that this is not his perfume…as I understand it, all they are claiming is that this perfume uses notes that he was carrying in his case — that’s it.

Maybe this is just the tip of the iceberg and the flankers will continue to give you that sinking feeling while you rearrange your deck chairs. Just be sure not to drown yourself in the stuff.

Masses of Titanic programmes have already been aired here in the UK. The Julian Fellowes’ series, which started on Sunday, is as rubbishy as the second series of Downton Abbey. There was a fairly interesting documentary the other night, but generally I’m as fed up with those as I already am with the Olympics. LOL!

LOL — TV here is so rubbishy that even series 2 of DA was a step up in comparison! I did not know he was doing a Titanic series though.

I’ve looked up Mr. S and found an article from the Manchester Evening News. http://menmedia.co.uk/manchestereveningnews/news/s/86/86913_titanic_survivors_lost_scents_are_finally_uncovered.html

I missed that bit. It is a romantic story, which has obviously inspired people to recreate Mr. S’s creations. Do you know of a fragrance that was inspired by other historical events or discoveries such as the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb? I want someone to create a fragrance inspired by Einstein’s theory of relativity! What would that smell like?

Thanks for that. I’m quite new to all the niche perfume houses and I didn’t know that Scents of Time was formed by David Pybus who created the other Titanic perfume. It is mentioned on the website. http://www.scentsoftime.co.uk/

DSH has some Egyptian recreations, but I’m not sure if they’re inspired by finding anything er…I think it was something in collaboration with a display of antiquities? There’s three or four, if I’m remembering correctly.

But nothing else of the sort really comes to mind. And I’m with the other poster (wasn’t paying much attention, was it Jolie?) upthread who’s already sick to death of the renewed Titanic craze. Actually I’ve been sick of it since the last one, thank you very much, James Cameron.

Pheromone was supposedly based on a formula translated from the hieroglyphics in an Egyptian tomb.

I just find the concept, “creepy”- like everything else Titanic that is being overpromoted. It is all too creepy for me.

People love romanticised creepy. I don’t think it’s creepy. I think of it as creating something positive (perfume that people can enjoy) out of something tragic.

Is this perfume being launched as part of a centennial memorial?
The anniversary is almost here to the date. Creepers, indeed.
I actually went to a Titanic exhibit a couple of years ago in the Discovery Center in Times Square and they had displayed a travel fragrance kit and numerous individual bottles of perfume that did contain residues of scent! In addition there were sealed wine and Champagne bottles that were completely full. It was so interesting to see that and many other artifacts from the Titanic that were just frozen in time. Kind of like Pompeii, it was a tragedy that claimed so many lives with barely a warning.

Oh, I’d give anything to smell those 100-year old scents! They were in perfect preservation conditions (until they started displaying them under lights, of course).

Regretsy does whole posts on “tragicrafting” – the rafts of “tribute” articles that suddenly appear on Etsy as soon as a star dies or around something like 9/11. All WAY less tasteful than this perfume!

The idea of a Titanic-themed perfume IS a bit creepy, but the notes sound nice and the cause seems worthy. I’ll have to ponder this one…

I’ll probably try it. Heritage fragrance always interests me, even if it’s just a vague interpretation of an older blend; I like having an idea of the scent of time and place — the most common and popular blends for scenting things, like soaps and potpurris, during a particular era. I just hope they can hold back from “modernizing” it too much. As it is, this reads like Fendi “Palazzo” without the pine (the bottle’s kind of reminiscent, too).

I was part of a “Titanic” project, years ago, when Dr. Ballard was visiting the wreck and lobbying to have it protected as a memorial ground/resting place, so my interest isn’t necessarily ghoulish. I did many talks on the tragedy, though. Seeing underwater footage, with close-ups of children’s shoes and dolls, really puts it into perspective.

I really dislike that movie, lol. When he drowned, it looked so fake. Why would he fall like a ton of bricks? OK? Like she’s floating on a little driftwood or whatever that was, holding his hand, she let’s go and then he sinks like he weighed a ton. Why would she have kept afloat while holding his hand? Just stuff I think about. That movie sucks, overrated LOL.

As for the perfume..I heard this really sinks, *stinks*..lol.

@dolcesarah..just read that, so sorry, and sorry for your abuse. Prayers going your way girl.

Ehhh. This creeps me out in a way other Titanic memorabilia doesn’t, and I can’t quite figure out why. I always associate perfume with fantasy, good vibes, dressing yourself up and lifting your spirits, showing off a scented facet of your personality to the world. What exactly does wearing a Titanic-inspired perfume say about you, or indeed about anything other than calling to mind the hopes and dreams of thousands of people who died in a tragedy? Normally I don’t get self-righteous about cash grabs – which this is – but I feel like a line is being crossed here. If not exactly offensive, this is hardly in good taste. (IMO.)
