Etat Libre d’Orange Fils de Dieu & Bijou Romantique ~ new fragrances

Posted by Robin on 6 February 2012 15 Comments

Etat Libre d'Orange Fils de Dieu

French niche line Etat Libre d'Orange has launched two new fragrances, Fils de Dieu and Bijou Romantique.

Fils de Dieu du riz et des agrumes (shown; formerly announced as Philippine Houseboy) ~ "He brings the sun. Here, find an innocent wisdom that points to dreams and liberation. This is the golden eye that reflects beauty and conflict, rapture and pain. Philippine Houseboy is an emotional fragrance, a scent that requires a sympathetic connection between the server and the served, the giver and the taker, and the willingness to exchange roles." Developed by perfumer Ralf Schwieger, with notes of ginger, coriander leaves, lime, shiso, coconut, rice, cardamom, jasmine, cinnamon, may rose, tonka bean, vetiver, musk, amber, leather and castoreum.

Bijou Romantique ~ "This is the portrait of a lady. She can be seen in the feminine cameo, in the soft, delicate profile, in the dreamy image of an incandescent beauty. What once was shell has been carved in relief by a devoted artisan, to emerge as an idealized woman. Jewels, too..." Developed by perfumer Mathilde Bijaoui, with notes of bergamot, lemon, pink pepper, ylang-ylang, sage, iris, coconut, vetiver, benzoin and vanilla.

Etat Libre d'Orange Fils de Dieu and Bijou Romantique are available now at the Etat Libre d'Orange webshop, in 50 ml Eau de Parfum.

Fils de Dieu… would be nice, but I don’t like neither coconut nor rice in fragrances. I prefere to eat it than smell like it. And what is shiso?

Sorry, lucasai buddy, but shiso is edible too-I think it’s the green leaf with your sashimi. My objections to Like This were also about edibility. But please call it Fils de Dieu and not Philippine Houseboy. There’s gotta be a line between edgy and condescending.

Thanks for the explanation. I still say it’s better to eat all this than smell like it. I don’t like edible fragrances, or at least those with too much edible notes. Sorry. Didn’t I call it Fils de Dieu? Phillipine Houseboy doesn’t sound like perfume at all.

Sorry again, I meant to criticize the idea of calling it Philippine Houseboy. I did not mean to criticize you.

The original Phillipine Houseboy name, under the text, refers to some fantasy involving a teenage and tawny servant ministering to his master (or mistresses needs). To my mind, the problem with that fantasy is not calling the teenager a boy, but the implied right of sexual harassment.
And yeah, I find, even by the standards of ELO naming(which includes “Fat Electrician”) to cross the line between clever and stupid.
Come to think of it, maybe ELO can make a deal to develop a fragrance called “Smell the Glove.” (And if you can’t figure out what I am talking about, you have seen the movie Spinal Tap, way too few times).

I’ve been looking for perfume with shiso, but coconut might present a problem for me. I wonder if Fils de Dieu can be a unisex fragrance? I love the scent of shiso (perilla).

DSH makes a great scent called Wasabi Shiso:

The last thing I expected was to read a politically correct comment on an article about Etat Libre D’Orange.

It’s not political correctness; it’s calling out basic rude racism/ethnic bigotry.

Their descriptions make me feel like Beavis and Butthead when they’re attempting to read: “Words…words…more words…”

ah…doesn’t ‘Fils dieu’ translate as ‘son of god’? Philippine Houseboy?? i fail to see the connection. And I agree with sergelutencio. Politically correct or otherwise from ELDO? I do like some of their fragrances, but sometimes they come across as teenage wiseguys. ‘Oh aren’t we cute’

And aren’t coriander leaves really cilantro? Sound like something I want to put an adobo to. Might be tasty.
