The Monday Mail ~ help Shermeen find a new perfume

Today we’re helping Shermeen, who is looking for a new everyday fall / winter fragrance. It should be warm and appropriate for the cold Canadian weather, but it shouldn’t scream patchouli or incense or be too dramatic a fragrance. It should also have excellent lasting power and good sillage. She can pay up to $100, and she has easy access to the Bay, Sears and Sephora, although she’s also willing to shop online if she can get a sample. Here is what we know about Shermeen:

She’s in her mid 20s, and is a classically trained singer and law student.

She’s an avid reader (preferring thought-provoking books), a relatively lefty feminist, and she’s almost completely blind and travels with a guide dog.

She likes writing, swimming, and being near water.

She says that although she is very outgoing, talkative and witty, she has few close friends, and needs a lot of “recharging time” if she’s with people too often.

Shermeen likes fresh green florals paired with citrus notes, and white, clean, warm musk scents, as well as aquatic fragrances…

Fornasetti Profumi Incense ~ home fragrance review

Posted by Jessica on 25 September 2011 20 Comments

I’ve occasionally paused in a high-end department store — usually on the way to the fragrance department — to admire the creations of Fornasetti. It would be easy, I think, to become addicted to Fornasetti’s world of ceramics and other home décor items, all embellished with witty designs that draw on a vocabulary of classical architecture, celestial bodies, playing cards, keyholes, and (most famously) the face of opera singer Lina Cavalieri, featured in hundreds of “themes and variations.” It’s a whimsical, almost Surrealist, visual style that filters Victorian imagery through a 1960s sensibility.

Fornasetti licensed the Fornasetti Profumi line just a year ago, and this venture seems like a smart fit for the brand. This collection encompasses various home-fragrance devices: scented candles, incense sticks, room spray, and ingenious three-way ceramic diffusers that can be adjusted to hold incense, perfumed oil, or scented crystals. It also has an impressive pedigree. The actual fragrance, named Otto, was developed by perfumer Olivier Polge. The candles, housed in Italian-crafted ceramic containers, are a wax blend manufactured by Cire Trudon, and the incense (the main subject of this review) is made by Nippon Kodo…

Notes of bergamot, warm milk, and brown butter

Posted by Robin on 25 September 2011 18 Comments

One day last month, Anna Payet wore a new perfume to an outdoor party in the northern Spanish town of Roses. The fragrance was mainly citrus, with notes of bergamot, warm milk, and brown butter. Extending her wrist for a fellow partygoer to sniff, Payet gushed, "Doesn't it smell good enough to eat?"

It should. The perfume in question, Núvol di Llimona (or "Lemon Cloud") was created by her brother-in-law, Jordi Roca, pastry chef at Cellar de Can Roca, one of Spain's most acclaimed restaurants...

— Read more at The New Spanish Scent That's Good Enough to Eat at Time. And you might remember that Jordi Roca liked to sample women's fragrances at Sephora to find inspiration for his desserts.
