Byredo Seven Veils ~ new fragrance

Posted by Robin on 18 October 2011 34 Comments

Byredo Seven Veils

Niche line Byredo has launched Seven Veils:

A spicy oriental composition built around the warmth of the vanilla flower and Indian sandalwood.

It is based on the biblical tale of Salome's dance of the Seven Veils, a story of many layers. Tainted and bejeweled, Salome turns to the art of shameless seduction. Barefooted, sanguine and black eyed, she demands a man's head on a plate in exchange for one single dance...

"On that first morning the moon sinks late and you feel the pull, as if it were night, magnetic in a way the sun could never be. Three memories pervade the air. The way you hold it; the way through fingers you let it slip; and the way the woven silk floats across winds. So now floats a perfect fifth, in a minor chord, from an ancient bow, resonating in our ears louder and louder. And louder still until it grows stronger than even our beating hearts. You rise up, upon your feet, and even higher. With seven veils you dance, swirling, swirling, swirling." (Ben Gorham)

The notes feature carrot, pimento berries, Tahitian vanilla flower, laurier rose, glycine, tiger orchid, sandalwood and vanilla.

Byredo Seven Veils is available now at Madision Perfumery in Romania, 138€ for 100 ml Eau de Parfum.

This sounds very interesting. What is glycine?

I was interested by sandalwood and vanilla, they lost me at carrot…I’ll give it a sniff when it hits the states, tho…

I know. It sounds so interesting save for the carrot note. Maybe it will be really subtle since I’d still like to try this.

Well, I absolutely must try this, for Salome is a family name going back generations which I count myself very lucky to have dodged.

Not wild about the carrot either but love the sound of the vanilla and sandalwood.

Where is the pro-carrot lobby today, LOL…

(j/k, there are plenty of notes I don’t like)

I’m pro-carrot, but anti-wisteria. Bummer – that’s the last time I ask what an obscure note is. 🙁

I like I Love NY’s Les Carrottes. On the other hand, this seems to be a very strange collection of note names. (Tiger Orchid- Does this translate as Tigerlilly, a flower which has no scent?).

No, the tiger orchid is an actual orchid, not particularly tigerish — a bright yellow with brownish blocks across it.

The tiger lily is actually one name for a bunch of very different lilies: three are found in the wild in various parts of the U.S., one of which (I think a hybrid actually) will grow in Canada despite the cold, and there are a couple more in various parts of Asia. The Canadian one is the most tigery in colour, in my opinion, but it has dots instead of stripes.

I’m really looking forward to this one (love the name) – but also hope the carrot note is not too strong. I really like Byredo – I think Gypsy Water, Bal d’Afrique and Palermo are all truly unique AND gorgeous. Unfortunately, they’re a bit out of my price range so I only have decants.
What do niche companies like this one (that claim high quality ingredients, etc.) do for sandalwood these days – anyone know?

I think Bal D’Afrique is quite nice. Sometimes Byredo is a fail in terms of high-quality materials (my opinion); don’t know what they’ll do for sandalwood.

I’ll sample this because I also like vanilla and sandalwood, and although I can’t say that I’m totally in love with any of the Byredo scents, I do like quite a few and think that they are well done–even if they are pricey. However, now they do also come in a smaller size.

Have you seen the smaller size in the US? I have a feeling they’re only in Europe…

I’d sniff this just for the carrot. : ) Fresh and vegetal? Yes. Allspice? YES.

I tried this in Liberty a couple of weeks ago, and liked it very much. I got the vanilla and spices, but I must say I didn’t detect any carrot at all. It’s one for the lovers of sweet perfumes, I’d say (this is me). Don’t know whether Liberty were stocking it, or just had a tester.

Thanks for posting. Do you get sandalwood? That’s my true love and I’ll seek to sniff anything with a strong sandalwood note…

I’ve sampled most of the Byredo scents, and IMO the line swings sweet. Even the ouds are sweetish. The funny thing is, I don’t consider myself a “sweet” scent person, but I bought a bottle of Bal d’Afrique and love it.

As much as I despair over the quantity (and, unfortunately, the quality) of niche releases of late, I have to give props to Byredo for fabulous packaging. Gorham’s design background really shows.

I was at Barney’s in Chicago this past weekend and was offered this fragrance to smell. It struck me as a pretty, not too heavy oriental…light on the carrots. In fact, I didn’t get the carrot note at all. Wish I could sniff it again after having read this so I could focus more on the notes.

OHMYGAWD!!!!!!!!!!! This Sounds SUBLIME! On The MUST BUY List, Love Vanilla ANYTHING, and am the Hugest fan of Wisteria… and BTW Robin, I am Pro-Carrot… Fresh Carrots shredded or ribboned smell so sweet and delicious yet earthy which sounds like it would be the perfect note in this composition! Now if they had Coconut in it i’d be walking across flaming shards of glass for it!

Don’t know if I’d love the scent, but I’d definitely try it as i’m not anti-carrot at all.

    LOVE the name!

I tested this on Sunday and took home a small sample. I think I’m in LOVE. This may be my winter scent this year. To my nose and limited skills, it opens with spicy clove similar to CdG’s Carnation. While the CdG has a more floral heart, Seven Veils sports the hypnotic base of sandalwood and vanilla. While I love sandalwood, I don’t like all of them. There’s something about Santal Blush and the two SL sandalwoods that is slightly repelling. This sandalwood is closer to what I find in PG’s Cadjmere (my favorite scent).

Sorry, Robin, I get no carrot!

I smelled this in Sweden recently and couldn’t detect any carrot either. The SA remarked that the top notes are like sticking your nose into a glass of brandy and she was dead on. After that it was like a sweet and intense version of EL Sensuous.
