Truest to a rose

Posted by Robin on 26 July 2011 10 Comments

Oh my goodness! This reminds me of the Damask family of rose. The truest rose scent known comes from this rose, which is native to Syria. This is truest to a rose. But I can still smell the difference between a real rose, with its truer, more present rose scent, and a reproduced scent.

Good afternoon Robin! Thanks for the post. I read the article and then read your take on Prada Infusion D’Rose. I didn’t care for it either….and I’m looking for a rose perfume. I don’t like Stella ( too sweet on) I like jasmine, I like amber and the drydown in Guerlain ( vanilla and Tonka bean?). I don’t like powdery, or sweet- sweet. I don’t know where to start……I hate the berry -ade stuff I’m finding at the malls. Any suggestions?………..

Have you tried Annick Goutal Ce Soir Ou Jamais?

I’d suggest Ce Soir ou Jamais in EDP, which has more lush rose and tempers the other 1000+ notes in it. The edt is thinner and has a tad more skank, if you even pick it up at all.

missyl, I have about 27 different predominantly rose scents or soliflore (and a whole smattering of others with roses in serious play), and I’m still always looking for the “perfect one”. I love them all. If you can spend the $$, Montale’s Highness Rose is pretty amazing. It is very hard to find ones that aren’t too fruity or gourmand/sweet.

You might try 2 of the Frederic Malle roses: Portrait of a Lady & Une Rose.

Second on the Portrait of a Lady. I haven’t smelled Une Rose yet. How does it compare to POL?

It’s earthier — smells a lot like warm dirt.

If you like Guerlain, try Nahema EdP sometime. It’s amazing! I also love the two Kilian roses, Rose Oud and Liaisons Dangereuses.

Wow, now I want to smell Shakespeare in Love! But good grief – another rose line, and I haven’t finished trying the 20+ Parfums de Rosine samples yet! A perfumista’s work is never done! 🙂

Too bad they didn’t introduce him to Parfums de Rosine – that would have kept him busy. And I’d love to hear what he thinks of Nahema, which LT says is a recreation of rose with no actual rose at all.

Yes…was interesting to hear his reactions, but it wasn’t the group of scents I’d have picked!
