Lazy Thursday poll ~ four questions

Posted by Robin on 26 May 2011 421 Comments

France Villandry

First a quick bit of business: Now Smell This will be taking a short Memorial Day weekend rest on Friday and Monday. There will be posts on Saturday, and possibly Sunday, and then Angela's regularly scheduled post will appear on Tuesday. Now, the poll:

1. What fragrance are you wearing today?

2. How did you pick it (does it match your clothes? your mood? was it just the first one you saw?)

3. What's the next fragrance you'd like to test?

4. Share something wonderful with us! It can be anything — a great movie you saw, something delicious you ate, the perfect mascara you just discovered last week, any fabulous news you recently received — really, anything.

Answer as many or as few as you like.

    1. SOTD is Musk perfume oil from Malin + Goetz.
    2. This is usually what i dab on when I I just want something cozy, warm and without too much of a trail.
    3. Going to the Hermes store over the weekend to have a mini-sniffathon. Should be good times!

I can’t say that I’ve been following their releases that closely…but I think they’ve been busy in the last few years. At the top of my list is the Pampelmousse Rose and ok…at the very least, I’ll sniff the Iris too!

Yes I’ve been waiting for a lazy poll!

    1. L’Air du Desert Marocain

    2. I’m at home with the family this weekend so my choices are limited (but I feel completely happy with this as an option!)

    3. I’m going to combine 3 and 4. I’m going to Paris next week to stay with a friend and am incredibly excited to try out some bell jars (ISM!) I would like to ask if anyone has any advice for perfume shopping in Paris. Would anyone be able to tell me which perfumes are available only in Paris (or at least cannot be shipped to the US), are the cheapest In Paris, or have only certain concentrations in Paris? I live in LA so I have good access to perfume already available here. Thanks in advance!

I would go for those Bell Jars…..Rose de Nuit, Sarrasins, Rahat Loukoum, Boxeuses…..is your suitcase too heavy yet? On to Guerlain!

Lucky you!! I was in Paris recently and before going I printed out Denyse’s (from Graindumusc.com) guide of perfume shopping on the left and right bank. It was invaluable. She gives you step by step instructions (literally) of how to get from each perfume store.

I second the use of GraindeMusc’s itinerary for a perfume visit in Paris.
If you like Parfums de Nicolaï they are included in the tour and the line now has 4 shops in Paris. Their fragrances tend to be much cheaper in France than in the USA.
There are 2 Goutal scents that are only available in Paris. Eau du Fier and Eau de Monsieur. They can be bought in their Rue de Castigione shop.

If the IUNX store is still open (it’s store is next to the main entrance of Hotel Costes on Rue Saint-Honoré) you should check it out. It sells a handful of fragrances by Olivia Giacobetti in gorgeous bottles. They only have the one store and they don’t ship.

    1. Bois 1920 Sutra Ylang

    2. I got it as an extra in a swap and have been trying to test samplesa at least once before they get put in the sample box, never to be seen again. Doesn’t really go with the weather and I must say I am not a fan. Lots of powder – where are the spices and sandalwood I hear about in reviews? Ah well, into the swap pile it goes!

You may want to try another sample just to make sure that one isn’t bad. This is such a beautiful scent (that or my skin just brings out the spices).

I think it’s just not to my tastes, which is a good thing – one less thing to buy! I don’t care for powdery scents and I tend to notice it even if it’s just a tiny bit. It is much better now that at first spray, but nothing I need!

    1) and 2) I am wearing Comme des Garçons’ Odeur 71, because I am writing about it, and it’s sort of horrible, and I’d scrub it off but as usual it will not scrub.

    3) and 4) I am going to be in New York in just over a week and I am going to try Jeux de Peau and I am probably going to buy it, too, unless it’s no good. But I doubt I will leave the city without a bottle of something.

4 redux) I got a Kindle two weeks ago and it is completely awe-inspiring. I’m reading more than I have in years, and it has built-in free wireless and 3G (like a phone line if there’s no wireless available) so I can check my e-mail just about anywhere in the world and oh, it’s just so perfect.

1&2. so sorry it won’t scrub off….it’s a cosmic law….maybe if you keep repeating “this is the best stuff in the world!” it will fade in 15 minutes…also a cosmic law.

3&4. mmmm I love Jeux de Peau !! mmmm warm buttery, apricot jam…so yummy and comforting! I hope you love it too!

also 4. isn’t the Kindle fabulous??? I take mine everywhere with me! did you get the lighted cover for it?–great for at night when “some” people can go right to sleep, your eyeballs refuse to close and a cat has decided to lay on your head and purr loudly…. Not that that’s how my night was last night….

iPads are very cool and do *everything*, but I just want to read, and the fact that the Kindle isn’t back-lit, and therefore easier on the old eyes, is what decided me.

53 and 71 are sort of similar, but to my nose, 53 is unapologetically synthetic (in an intriguing way) from the get-go, while 71 starts as a cologne and gradually turns more and more mechanical and synthetic in an aggressive way that I find really unpleasant. Your mileage may vary, obviously. I don’t LOVE either 53 or 71 or any of the Synthetic series (which is a close relative of the earlier scents), but 53 is the best of the lot, with Soda a close second.

I really prefer physical books, but I have to admit that I’m running out of shelf space and the Kindle is great for travel and out-of-print Victorian novels. I don’t know how else I would get to read “Tom Brown at Oxford”.

Understand. I love paper books to. Have stacks and stacks in my walk-in closet! But you can beat a Kindle or a Nook for immediate gratification: see the book online….click click …and you’ve got it to read! Plus you can have 100’s of books with you on a vacation or even just sitting and waiting (waiting waiting) at the doctor’s office. And….as you hit 40 and beyond…it’s nice to be able to change the font size 😉

I love physical books, too, and I have a great many of them. But the Kindle is so portable; you can read anything anywhere, and if you get tired of reading a history of Egypt, zoom you switch over to a David Sedaris collection or a mystery or the story of Henrietta Lacks (incredible book, by the way), because you can carry literally thousands of books in the same small space, so what could be better for a plane trip or a commute or waiting in line? You can also turn documents on your computer into PDFs and read them on the go. and there’s the browser, and the MP3 player just in case, and the text-to-speech, and and and….

I honestly thought I didn’t need one. How wrong I was.

Since I already have a couple of clip-on reading lights, I didn’t get the case with the built-in book light, nice though it was: I bought a really attractive navy-blue leather case that was meant for the Kobo, which also happens to fit the Kindle perfectly. I thought I could do without a case until the first time I chucked it into my knapsack and had visions of the screen cracking. A case is a necessity.

if they can make a Kindle that has that new book or old book smell, that’s when I will crack and purchase a “full bottle”. *winks*

            1. SOTD = Bvlgari Pour Femme layered over Bvlgari’s Eau Parfumée au Thé Vert.

            2. How did you pick it (does it match your clothes? your mood? was it just the first one you saw?) Matches my mood and my clothes and the weather. i.e. mild & muggy, just want to feel pretty, yet casual. (Casual Friday at the office is the dress code today).

            3. What’s the next fragrance you’d like to test?
Oscar de La Renta Esprit d’Oscar. Thank you Angela for the enticement.

            4. I just may finally get around to planting some annuals in the garden as we have actually had 3 whole days with sun in them and counting! Yes, the sun does still shine in New England! We haven’t had 2 full consecutive days of sunshine since last October is how I feel…looking forward to smelling like spring earth later…Hope everyone has a lovely weekend.

    1. Mugler Cologne.
    2. It’s the perfect summer fragrance, refreshing and a bit earthy, and I find it incredibly sexy.
    3. Having recently got a bottle of L’Eau Mixte, I would love to explore the rest of the PdN line. Ditto Annick Goutal.
    4. Film-wise, hardly anything wows me these days, but I did love Bright Star, Rabbit Hole and the superb (althouth bleak) Fish Tank.

1 and 2. Ormonde Jayne Champaca, because it feels like a spring scent to me and I’ve been wearing it a lot over the last few weeks.
    3. I would like to finally test Chamade, because I’ve been hearing so many wonderful things about it.
4a. Last weekend we were in Las Vegas and I got to do lots of sniffing. I bought a bottle of Tonka Imperiale at the Guerlain boutique in the Palazzo (and managed to sniff just about everything except Chamade, unfortunately, while I was there).
4b. Book: “Charles Jessold, Considered as a Murderer.” Not exactly a traditional murder mystery, but fun.

No! I only got my MacBook Pro a couple of years ago. No time for all these toys, and put off by the thought that whatever I buy will be obsolete next year. Or next month, LOL! Might as well wait for the fabled final screen – the single device that does everything well. Which some say is the iPad, but I’m not sure.

I’m not sure either. I love our Macs (laptop and desktop), and I’m tempted by the iPad and Kindle and iPhone, but I don’t want a bunch of devices! Maybe if there was an iPad with a regular keyboard (built in, not separate)!

Mariclaire – I’ve done yoga off and on the past 20 years. I’m not very flexible, but I find that it makes me feel better in general and I sleep better too. Try the Yoga for Longevity by Rod Stryker, or Kathy Smith New Yoga Basics for Beginners, or Yoga Conditioning for Weight Loss with Suzanne Deason. They really emphasize technique, especially for those of us not flexible, and have beginner poses. My husband likes Rodney Yee, but I think I would die if I did his b/c he is very flexible and strong too.

    1. I’m hoping my SOTD will be Aimez Moi, because I think my bottle will arrive today (knock on wood).
    2. I haven’t worn it in years, and then all of a sudden I couldn’t get it out of my mind last week. It’s cheap enough from discounters that I decided to splurge. Can’t wait to see if it’s as good as I remember!
    3. The new Mon Numero line from L’Artisan. I really hope they offer a sample pack.

    1 + 2
I am wearing Lolita’s Si Lolita, which I chose to match my preppy, rose cardigan outfit (Si Lolita’s pepperiness smells ‘preppy’ and ‘upbeat’ to me). Now that I was left the house and trudged to work, however, I wish I was wearing more, both in terms of clothing and perfume. It’s like the weather has travelled two months back in time and it is rainy, blustery, and cold out, and I am finding that neither my cardigan or Si Lolita’s sheer sillage can stand up to this weather. Wish I was wearing an oriental.

1- SOTH Brasil Dreams for him.
2- I needed something seasonal but with a bit of spice as today is wet and cool.
3- Hermes Eau de Gentiane Blanche, Pamplemousse Rose and Ambre Narguilé.
4- The only wonderful thing I can think of is the fact that I was able to escape to the cottage last week for 4 days of gardening, BBQ, and falling asleep to the sounds of frogs singing in the nearby marsh.

Sadly, Pamplemousse Rose has terrible lasting power. I have a nearly untouched FB & purse spray because it simply doesn’t last. I can douse myself in it, spray it all over my clothes, in my hair … 15 minutes later, nothing. It’s a shame b/c I paid full price for it at Neiman Marcus — a mistake on my part since discounters carry it — and it’s a really lovely fragrance for summer if only it lasted long enough for me to enjoy it.

1 & 2: SotD of L’Heure Bleue. I’m wearing because I’m dressed in a blue animal print skirt — it’s classier than it sounds, I swear & somehow this is logical in my mind — and also the fact that I had misplaced my bottle of it in a small suitcase I’d forgotten to unpack over a month ago.

3: As for the next fragrance I’d like to test, probably one of the new L’Artisans. A few of them have me intrigued but I tend to flake out on fragrances I’ve been vying after & impulse buy something instead.

4: And I’m quite thrilled that today is my ‘Friday’ as I’m taking an extra long weekend off for Memorial Day. It’s the simple things.

Hope everyone has a lovely holiday.

I snickered at your animal print skirt comment only because one of my favourite skirts is pink animal print 😀 It’s surprisingly versatile and, yes, than it sounds. Because the background is pink but the print is black & white it works well with a plain white tee and simple sandals in the summer and a black sweater, black opaque tights and ankle boots in the colder months.

I was mentally picture ‘blue animal print skirt’ in the minds of others & was seeing this mini 80’s-tastic lycra nightmare paired w/ leg warmers. It’s actually a high waisted silk pencil skirt with very large almost watercolour spots on a blue field. I’ve got it paired w/ a navy crepe poet blouse & black wide belt & suede spectators. Animal print can be a lot of fun as long as it’s the ‘right’ type of animal print and I’m quite happy that it’s back in style.

Your pink skirt sounds simply fabulous.

Weirdly, I didn’t picture 80’s tackiness at all when I read “blue animal print skirt”; I instead imagined something along the lines of a pale, watery blue Monet painting. Anyway, your description of the skirt sounds lovely. Here’s to wearing clothes we love and feel good in!

I’ve been to Crete a lot and have unfortunately never seen a good perfume shop in the south-west parts at least. Hania airport has the regular tax-free selection and in the pharmacies you can buy Korres products and scents.
In gift shops you can also find cheap solid perfumes in decorated bottles.
However, you can smell jasmin blossom in the evenings and sometimes you’ll walk past a fig tree that smells better than any perfume can capture it! Hawaian tropic is another scented delight during my holidays…

It is prim and proper but not stuffy (if that makes any sense). More graceful and cultured. Maybe more modern what with the whole backwards to go forwards thing.

I’m so bad about describing perfumes and picking out notes but I think this is rather pretty.

Love the Eau de Camille, just what I was missing from my scent wardrobe. It is definitely green, but not bitter, with enough honeysuckle to gentle it without being sweet. I own Balmain Ivoire and find this much fresher and lighter but it still feels, for lack of a better word, chic.

Our son was similarly nonverbal. Spent hours that turned into months that turned into two plus years taking him to specialists and speech therapy (and even a child psychologist) trying to find out why he wasn’t talking. Tried so much; prayed so much more. He’s now 24, graduated from college, married, and, of all things–is a successful salesperson! He talks for a living! Who’d have guessed!?

and my exciting news? today is my last day of college (apart from going in for exams). so now to find a job (I don’t want to go to University). hopefully I can find an accountancy apprentiship.

I’m wearing the Chanel Cristalle EDP today — woody citrus. I realized on the drive into work that I hadn’t applied anything, and I have what I call my little “dime bag” of samples, so I dabbed at a red light. (much safer than texting?)

I want to test more Ormonde Jayne… Love their fragrances. I need a night of multi-sampling all over my arms & wrists. Maybe tonight, if my meeting gets canceled; wishful thinking.

The wonderful thing is that my Zephirine Drouhin rose bush is blooming right now. The rose in my avatar is from this bush. Such a heavenly fragrance!!

I love Cristalle edp. If this heat and humidity keeps up, it will be next on the list. I was wearing No 19 a lot the past week, and it seems like a natural transition.

1&2: AG Petite Cherie, because a) it’s hot and humid and I don’t like cologne and b) I’m currently taking a break from mowing the grass.
3: Up next for testing will be… the two variations on Laurie’s new summer scent for Sonoma Scent Studio.
4: New dishwasher should be installed today, replacing the POJ that doesn’t get the dishes clean!

    1. What fragrance are you wearing today? Amaranthine

    2. How did you pick it (does it match your clothes? your mood? was it just the first one you saw?) Started with Bluebell today but I like a bit of spice and dressed up a bit more than usual…so added a spritz of Amaranthine…

    3. What’s the next fragrance you’d like to test?
I’d love to try some SweetAnthems…a local spa carries this etsy line!

    4. Share something wonderful with us!
The musicals coming to town this year…Next To Normal (love loved this in NYC! won tonz of Tony’s!) and MEMPHIS! Saw this at the limited engagement movie of the Broadway show…very good! Can’t wait to see it in the fall here! (can you tell i’m a theater nut!)

    4. Most fabulous thing to share with y’all: Portland, Maine! Yes, I moved here about 7 years ago. Portland is a foodie town. We have some of the most amazing restaurants and chefs. Many come up from NYC to take advantage of the lower rents and abundant local products. We’re spoiled!!! It’s a town of 35,000, but we have a symphony, opera, art school, great nightlife, beaches, fun shops, and LOBSTER! Ha. Anyway, best decision I ever made. Love it. Come visit sometime. 🙂

Hi bookgirl! There are a few of them – Longfellow Books, and a great foodie book shop called Rabelais. There’s also one down the street from me here in South Portland called Nonesuch, and a few used book shops. But yes, Borders is also in town, and it gets a lot of business. Sad to see the independents die out. I admit I’m an Amazon fan, and also have a Kindle…so, I’m not helping much!

    1. Lonestar Memories on one arm, L’Air du desert marocain on the other.

    2. I’ve been meaning to test them side by side. I think I might prefer the latter as it seems to me to be the more subtle, yet complex of the two; however, the former has a wonderful leather saddle/cowboy quality to it that I find so hypnotic.

    3. I have so many on my list, but lately I’ve been in sort of a spicy, dirty rose mood.

    4. I’ve started taking these exercise classes called The Bar Method, which is a mix of ballet, pilates, and yoga. It’s so freaking difficult, but I’m already feeling so much stronger than before and much more toned. Also, I’m currently watching the 4th season of Mad Men on Netflix, and I’d say the series overall is pretty wonderful. Jon Hamm is particularly wonderful to look at. 🙂

Arrested Development is one of the greatest shows EVER! My husband and I are total addicts, and we discovered it at the perfect time a few years ago – right after our baby was born. Long nights, loss of sleep, arch family humor – it was perfect. We still watch it all the time. I want to be Lucille Bluth when I grow up, lol. But every character is perfect.

I’ll have to try JdP again when I get home, as it is also pouring rain and cold here, and hopefully I will finally get past the scary top notes to the coziness you speak of!

Sanitaire, the Eureka commercial line, is good for dog and cat hair. Casey the Lab mix, Patches the 85-pound mutt with Corgi ears and markings, Nikki the tabby-point Siamese mix, Korrigan the black-and-orange Halloween kitty, and Mitsouko the Maine Coon all hate the noise, but they don’t realize that it makes living with them easier. (They shed so that I can stuff pillows, of course!)

Maine Coons are large, long-haired cats with normal cat faces, not the Persian short nose. They’re a natural American breed. The “Coon” is because the tabbies (most common color, though they come in any normal cat color) have tails like raccoons.

Daisy – You’re not the only one who gets excited about vacuum cleaners. The CEO is a cleaning connoisseur and just yesterday as we drove down the local highway, he noticed a store named after a vacuum cleaner (with a German manufacturer’s name) and began waxing poetic about the machine. Apparently that would be his “ultimate” vacuum cleaner, so guess I’d better go find out more about it for a Father’s Day gift or something….

Maybe because I’m lazy (or because it’s HEAVY) but I don’t want to move my furniture every few days to vacuum up the latest batch of dog hair! So I love the “ball” feature of this Dyson….it really does maneuver around things perfectly!

    1. SOTD is a tester of one of Laurie’s new summer scents – the non-floral one. It’s all I can say about it until she divulges more on her blog.
    2. The decision to wear was simple – she sent it to me, and the last 2 days turned out to be the perfect weather for wearing this type of fragrance.

    4. Both yesterday and today I wore it alongside 3 other scents based on this same note for comparison. Laurie told me about this project sometime last year and I went and ordered a bunch of different samples to familiarize myself with this new territory. It turned out to be a very good and now I have a little library of this new scent family in my ssamples collection!

    3. Next Fragrance? Whenever Daisy’s package arrives, I’ll be testing out either AG Rose Splendide or WGP!

SOTD is Mon Jasmin Noir. I have a small decant, and wanted to wear something besides the lighter floral and colognes I’ve been wearing on this cool and pleasant day. I’m looking forward to testing White Gardenia petals and have samples on the way! And life, in general is pretty darn wonderful. I cold complain, but knowing people who are worse off humbles me and makes me grateful for all I have – including great scents and people to share them with!

    1) and 2) Azugary is what I’m wearing today. I choose it because it came in yesterday’s mail, I spritzed and fell in in love! Have even decided it’s going to be the perfume I wear to a wedding this weekend.

    3) Can’t wait to try White Gardenia Petals! Mail is too slow!

    4) I discovered this week I can put 1/4 cup of popcorn kernels in a brown paper lunch bag, folder over the top twice, and pop them in the microwave oven. Takes about 3 minutes but I turn off the microwave when popping slows (similar to how you do it if you buy microwave popcorn at a store). It comes out fluffy, isn’t greasy and tastes great. Tiny sprinkle of salt and we have a great (and cheap) snack. In sharing this with friends, I seem to be about 10 years behind the rest of the them as they already knew this!

    2. How did you pick it (does it match your clothes? your mood? was it just the first one you saw?) Honestly on a whim, because I felt like Earl Grey – it was my breakfast tea this morning as well.

    3. What’s the next fragrance you’d like to test? Mitsouko has been on my list for a while…

    4. Share something wonderful with us! It can be anything — a great movie you saw, something delicious you ate, the perfect mascara you just discovered last week, any fabulous news you recently received — really, anything. Something wonderful, eh? Well I guess I may have found a new foundation so that must count for something haha. NARS Sheer Matte – my HG was Shu Uemura’s Face Architect.

    1. Nothing today, SSS Wood Violet yesterday.

    2. I was in a hurry to get out to the DMV before going to work today. Yesterday I thought Wood Violet went with rain and a violet sweater.

    3. I’m not getting any new samples at the moment so that I won’t be tempted to buy a full bottle.

    4. While looking for a dramatic monologue, I rediscovered “The Midnight Court” by Brian Merriman. 18th-century Irish and hilarious. I’m memorizing an abridged version of the young woman’s complaint, in the Frank O’Connor translation, which is better poetry and somewhat less explicit, but less literal and idiomatic than this one (and not online). http://www.showhouse.com/prologue.html

(Yes, I can read the original, but I don’t think my audience wants to hear it.)

    1. I am wearing Herméssence Brin de Réglisse.
    2. I chose it because I tried it yesterday and liked it a lot. A quick spritz — I won’t like it anyway — what is that??? I loooooove it!! I was anxious to try it again today, couldn’t wait!
    3. I will test next another Herméssence I haven’t tried before — Poivre Samarcande.
    4. Hopefully, I will go to Seattle in June and will get to Hermés store in person!

Warum: I’ll be in Seattle in August and a visit to the Hermes store is also on my “want to do” list! Talking my husband in carving out time to do that is another story! He’s an anti-scent kinda guy so while supportive of my wearing/buying, shopping along with me is pushing the issue!

    Hi all!
    1. I’m wearing Bal a Versailles, wore it in H.S. and am falling in love with it again. I wanted something soft musky with a touch of skank.
    2. I chose it because I wanted something soft and comforting. It’s been a bear of a year, I need some comfort! 🙂
    3. The next fragrance I’d like to test is the Perfumer’s Reserve Aromatics Elixir, or the Fendi that was released last summer, I haven’t found it anywhere, don’t know if it was released statesside or not??
    4. My something wonderful is my mom was released from the hospital this week (she has lung cancer) and she is back at home with her kitties.

    1. Absolue pour le Soir by MFK
    2. Because my beloved missing decant for travel fell out of my pair of jeans that I left at the chiropractor’s. And my massage therapist said it was her favorite. But I want to keep it for myself. I don’t tell others around here what it is. I just call it “Cavalia.”
    3. I want more samples of Tom Ford’s line. Black Orchid, and Oud Wood.
    4. Jo Malone’s limited and irritatingly hard to find Sweet Milk, from the Tea Collection. So nice, lightly coconuty, funky and layers well.

YES, the Sweet Milk! Isn’t it great? I like it by itself, too. They came out with it again, but the SM was not available, so enjoy what you have! It does have a coconuty feel but that isn’t listed in the notes. So glad there’s another fan out there! Imagine the bath oil that would make!!

Today is Carnal Flower and it is FANTASTIC in the heat and high humidity. I think floral scents smell best in the heat, already 80 degrees @ noon. YMMV

    3. I would like to test Une Fleur de Cassie by Frederic Malle. (but don’t have a sample 🙁 )

Oh and at first I was put off by the sour/bitter aspect of this fragrance, which I attributed to the mate, but the mate absolute smells smoky herbal tea. I also sniffed oakmoss absolute which is listed as an ingredient on the box… This acclimation to specific notes has allowed me to enjoy L’Heure Fougueuse much more.

1& 2. SSS Champagne du Bois. I have a package of samples at my bedside from SSS. As I was browsing through the scents, I saw CdB. The first time I tried it, I was “meh”. But since it receives so much love here, I tried it again and now I adore it. I even ordered a bottle today! I think when I tried it before I had tried some other things and did not get a proper “sniff”.

    3. Xerjoff Damarose-Marina’s review made me drool.

    4. I just got married to such a wonderful man!!! One of the first tests in our courtship was a perfume discussion-he was intrigued. When he finally saw my entire perfume (and orchid) collection he was not frightened away. The first perfumes I bought him are Voyage and Bulgari Black. He likes both.

      2. I chose Iris because it was a sample that kept rolling into my field of view, demanding to be sampled. It’s nice, I suppose, but I won’t be buying a full bottle.
      3. Next thing I would like to test: Hermes Jardin sur le Nil or Dior Escale a Portofino.
      4. Wonderful thing: This is going to sound NOT wonderful, but ultimately, it is. I had a hysterectomy earlier this month because of a mass that was detected near my ovary. It turned out to be a very rare cancer of the fallopian tube. Please do not worry. It is a stage 1A, and the small tumor was very localized. The wonderful thing is this: I am going to be well, even though I may have to have chemo. I’m not happy about possibly losing all my hair; I’m very vain about my hair. But, I WILL BE WELL! Plus, my employer gave me a gift card for Amazon–I may buy a Kindle.

    1. SOTD – Byredo Bal D’Afrique

    2. I was wearing my new glasses and was feeling something unisex and fresh with a touch of sexy. Something that would cut through a warm day in NYC. I have to admit – sometimes the vetiver comes off as salty/sweaty – but i still love it

    3. I really really REALLY need to get my hands on some Ormonde Jayne samples of her florals – Tiare, Sampaquita and Frangipani. Already loving my testers of Ta’if and Woman. Champaca on the other hand smells exactly like Lancome “Miracle” to me….the nose is a funny thing.

    4. I am hoping to close on my first apartment in the next month. I am thrilled, overwhelmed and slightly terrfied of finally becoming a homeowner. Harlem here I come.

Carnal Flower because the weather is so warm here in Austria. Love the coconut note in the sunshine.

    1. Testing Odin Nomad on right arm. Then put Tonkamade on left arm. Both are fading and it’s a nice spring day, not too warm, so I thought Panache would do me nicely (and it is).

    2. Odin because I’ve been wearing Cadjmere for months, but this once might be better in warmer weather. Don’t know why I chose Tonkamade, bought the bottle and have not worn too much. Panache, because I’m a little chilly and I find this warming, but not too much so since it’s sunny out. I thought a LOV, heliotrope or lilac scent would be too “chilly.”

    3. No idea. I’m always looking for the scent that will change my life 🙂 But I kinda wonder if there is any such thing…

    2. Frankly, I picked it because I have this Ziploc full of perfume samples and I’m going through them one by one to figure out which ones I like. The Hermes was the one I happened to grab this morning. I’m usually just as random, though.

    3. What’s the next fragrance you’d like to test?
I love the Diptyque scents, so I’m looking to try 34 Boulevard Saint Germain.

    3. There are so many I would like to try, but I would really like to explore Versace Versense.

    4. Looking forward to Dinner & Dancing which starts tonight. The ladies in my family get together for dinner every Thursday night, and we watch So You Think You Can Dance together. My sister used to be a professional dancer, and we really enjoy our time together watching the different styles. 🙂

Versense is nice – and easy to find, so shouldn’t be hard to get a sample.

    3. I’m going to be sampling several of the L’Artisans, sent to me by one of the lovely peeps from here. Thank you! <3

    4. I *finally* bought myself a Kindle yesterday!! So I don't even have it yet, but I can't wait. I'm a voracious reader, and I do love holding the real thing, but I'm being overrun (even with frequenting the used book store and trading in!).

    Have a great weekend everyone!

The CEO’s family are all avid book readers, and when I moved in – books were all over the place – paper and hardbacks in closets, garage, the attic. In fact, my stepdaughter zipped through the entire final volume of Harry Potter book in one day. I have trouble remembering what I just read from page to page – unless it’s Opera News, of course!
The husband got his for Christmas and loves it. He has RA so the lighter weight has been especially helpful.

          • OperaFan says:
            29 May 2011 at 2:55 pm

More sheer, more fresh – which may seem like an oxymoron for Samsara, LoL! It’s got mint and herbs in there, I think. It’s a lovely version for summer. I used to work with Anni Buzantian’s husband, and when I wore some to work soon after receiving a sample – he commented on it (not knowing what it was) and called it “very discreet.” Think it was created around the time of EL Pleasures and the original Tommy and was perhaps intended to compete with those. Sadly it didn’t make it and got discontinued.
            I’ll send you some!

Hello Everyone & Happy Memorial Day Weekend to those of us the US!

    1. In the morning I put on AG Mandragore b/c I needed something refreshing and zesty – my allergies were killing me and it’s super humid up here. This afternoon (after much medicine and caffiene perked me up) I put on L’AP Drole de Rose. Love those roses!
    2. It’s humid and suddenly very hot.
    3. Next to test… I have no idea. I’m kind of in a blank space right now.
    4. Something wonderful: After 8 long years of my hard work and 6 months I’d never expected to be so hard, we FINALLY closed on our tax free commercial loan for $3.4 mill for our NEW library building and will break ground in 2 weeks. Yeah for me! Yeah for all of us waiting 15 years for a new library building! As of next year, I’ll finally have an air conditioned office, geothermal no less, in a gorgeous and terribly functional new building!! Yipee!!

Hi Moore. I saw your question above, so it’s just as easy to reply here. This is off the top of my head, without looking up the other supporting notes for each. To my nose Mandragore is very citrus/bergamot and tea with a dash of pepper and light violets to ground it. It doesn’t have much of a base, so most development comes from the great opening (a type of tea cologne) and the movement into the middle notes – the violet and some woods I suppose. Mandragore Pourpre has a bit of that citrus/bergamot at the opening, but it is more subdued. It has a prominent anise note at the top, which I love, and it more aromatherpy like than regular Mandragore, which (again), I wear as I would a cologne. Mandragore Pourpre is one of my total “chill out” fragrances. It has more soft woods, less violet, and something softer in the base that is actually apparent – maybe tonka? – but some nice gentle woods. I just picked up MP last fall and so far I’ve only worn it for the fall/winter. I think they are both great. Good luck testing them!

ANNS, Mandragore Pourpre is anything like Burberry Touch Man, Arpège Pour Homme, Lolita Au Masculin or 212 Sexy Man (for me these ones follow the same vibe)?

Thanks Rapp. I normally wouldn’t bring up something like that on the blog, but it’s been a project that’s ruled my life (and my family’s life) now for these 8 years. Aside from having a baby during that time, it’s been building building building forever and ever. They don’t teach you about land development plans and phase one studies in library school! I am so happy that it’s nearly over. I can’t wait to see our vision come to fruition!

    1) I’m wearing Eau D’Orange Verte. Someway it’s top notes remember me L’Instant Pour Homme (bergamot?) and I like too much it’s subtle base notes. I wish it could be stronger and long lasting.
    2) I picked it on the net. I wear my fragrances according to my mood; sometimes I make mistakes and think: “why didn’t I use that another?” I only wear a frag according to my clothes when I need to be better dressed (such as parties). Also, sometimes I wear according to the ambience.
    3) I want to much to smell Ambrè Fetiche and Mandragore Pourpre from Annick Goutal.
    4) Great mivie Ive watched recently: Requiem for a Dream (ok, I know it’s so old, but…) and Caribean Pirates 4- Jack sparrow is such a funny stuff; 🙂

    1. Today I am wearing JM Tea Fragrances.. Fresh Mint Leaf layered with the Assam and Grapefruit.. very refreshing…

    2. I needed a pick me up from the sticky, humid climate outside my window.. and that was just the ticket….

    3. I’m still dying to smell untitled by Maison Martin Margiela… it just sounds so great to me =)

    4. I love sneaking off to see independent films in NYC.. So, tomorrow I’m very excited to see the new Terrence Malick movie, The Tree of Life starring Brad Pitt… The Thin Red Line is one of my favorite movies and Brad Pitt is one of my favorite actors.. I can’t wait!!!

    1. I am wearing Lola by Marc Jacobs.
    2. Because a customer sprayed it near me last night and as it kind of wafted towards me I remembered why I liked it so much back in the beginning. Also, it’s rather cool this morning, so the weather seems right.
    3. I really want to try the new Lancome, and I also still have my list of Turkish Delight-esque fragrances from NST peeps burning a hole in my pocket (need to wait until I get into the city, where they may actually have them).
    4. I’m really cranky – my work is selling Chanel 19 100mL EDP testers for $30(!!!!!!), and there is only one left in the whole company, it is over 1500km away 🙁 Same goes for the Coco 100mL EDP for $50.50. So unfair.

    1) I put on sensuous this morning because,
    2a) its winter here,
2b) I felt like something easy, (after wearing Daphne, Like This, and Chamade recently – all a bit challenging for me) and
    3) I haven’t worn it for a while so its a nice change.

Got home this evening and felt like something fresh, sweet and fun, so I put some of my Philosykos sample on right wrist and AG’s rose Splendide on left.

Question: does anyone know which of these has the best lasting power 1) L.A. Fig 2) L.A.Fig extreme or 3)Philosykos?

I definitely think that the LA Extreme fig lasts the longest, at least in my experience. I went through a major fig perfume stage and just loved this one the most, although many prefer Philosykos. But for what it’s worth, I splurged and bought the shower gel and body lotion as well in the L’Artisan, and I imagine that the whole package was intensified because of that.

I don’t have children, but I can offer a perspective from the other side. My mother had a really hard time letting me grow up. I think in my case it was particularly because I am the youngest and the only girl (I have three older brothers). When I went off to college, I really didn’t know how to be an adult and be responsible for myself, make decisions for myself, schedule my time, handle money, or do any other “grown-up” things because I had never been allowed to learn how, so I had to learn it all really fast. You more you are able to let go now, and let her become independent, the better it will be for her later.

thanks for your insight- I appreciate the sentiment, and I really do want to be the sort of mom who can let go enough to let her make mistakes and find her way without wagging my finger at her and butting in with my opinion unless she is asking for it! (Can you tell I did not have that kind of mom?)

Two rose perfumes would be awesome – one showcasing the pure and austere dawn rose, and the other – a dark. Cased in twin swan-shaped crystal flacons. Oooooh – I want!

I once read in a fashion magizene, “If you feel blue, wear red.” i.e., when you’re depressed, that’s when you should indulge in stuff that will cheer your up. Maybe next blah day, reach for that really special bottle or sample you’re saving for a special occasion.

    1. What fragrance are you wearing today?
    Creed Chevrefeuille

    2. How did you pick it (does it match your clothes? your mood? was it just the first one you saw?)
I had a sample I’ve never tried, so I gave it a whirl. However, it doesn’t suit me. I smell a sour middle note that I just can’t love.

    3. What’s the next fragrance you’d like to test?
I’m waiting for a sample order at the moment. It includes Ginger Pear and White Gardenia Petals by Illuminum.

    4. Share something wonderful with us! It can be anything —
I’m going to Italy this summer, so I’ve been looking into perfume shopping opportunities in Rome. All advice and suggestions would be gratefully appreciated.

QUESTiON: Has anyone here tried Floris Wedding Bouquet and/or Creed White Flowers? I’m in a white flower sort of mood at the moment I guess. Your thoughts about these fragrances would also be gratefully appreciated.

Haven’t tried the Floris, but the Creed was pretty screechy on me. I’m a big jasmine lover, not so much the tuberose scents – my favorite white flower scent being Mahora. Lots of folks on here are fans of the OJ white flower scents. Also, Laurie of SSS is working on a white flower scent that promises to be very nice. Should be ready very soon.

Thank you for the information! Too bad about the Creed. Fleurissimo is one of my reliable go-to fragrances. I have to admit that I didn’t love Mahora the one time I tried it, but I guess it is due for a second airing if I can find the sample (among many). Looking forward to the SSS!!!!

Good luck with your pup. Thundershirts have been recommended by many experts and I’ve heard good things. Haven’t used one for my dog – we live in San Diego and I can count on one hand the number of times we’ve had thunder in the 10 years I’ve lived here. If we lived elsewhere, I might have to get one – Gilbert totally freaked out during the one storm that lasted more than 1 or 2 booms.

Congrats on all the milestones for your daughter! You know, I’ve repeat tested No 18 for about 3 years now. I want to love it – I love many Chanels and roses too. But every time I test it, I get the same thing – a cold herbal, very rooty, very twiggy – almost like some natural medicine or something. It’s a total bummer. It’s good she has an idea for something else special to want.

Thursday, I went into NYC to visit some college friends and go to a museum. I wore Geranium Pour Monsieur because it makes me feel clean and fresh.
Today, it’s Vanilli Insensee, because I just wanted to.

The next scent I would like to figure out is L’huere Bleu. I have decided I must have it, but in which concentration. I have Mitsouko in EDP but it can be a little over powering. Any thoughts anyone?

As for something beautiful, I recently saw “Memories of Forgotten Dreams,” a documentary film by Werner Herzog about a beautiful cave in southern France, with the most elaborate, beautiful cave paintings ever found. In a short segment, a perfumer who described himself as the former head of France’s perfume counsel, was shown smelling into the moutainside and explained he was trying to detect hidden caves through his sense of smell.

I’m late to the party, for the reason in no. 4 below:

    1) I’m wearing Oha, which is one of my new favorite perfumes. My search for the perfect rose scent finally led me to this one, which has enough other stuff going on to keep the rose from getting too thin or sour, but still features the rose prominently in center stage.

    2) I picked it because I just love it and wanted to wear something today that I know I love and that makes me feel good.

    3) I would like to test Amaze by POTL, but am having trouble finding samples. It sounds right up my alley, particularly as everyone says it is quite unlike Luctor et Emergo (which I did not like!), but of course I will not buy unsniffed.

    4) I just bought a new car! OK, it is a used car, but it is new to me. It was rather sudden; five days ago I had no idea I would be buying a car this week. Our old car (1991 Buick Park Avenue, 265,000 miles) let me know on Monday that it wants to retire now. I will still probably have it looked at to see what it would take to get it in running order, but it has definitely seen better days. I had been holding out hope that it would make it to 300,000 miles, but I realize not many cars make it that far.

      Oha is really beautiful.

And congrats on the new (to you) car! Honestly, that’s the smart way to do it. I bought a new car once… ONCE. It was a Saturn 4 door, in 1995, when I was great with First Child. We had to sell it when I was suddenly great with Third Child – surprise! – and we found that three car seats would not fit across the back seat. Replaced it with a used minivan. Other than that, we’ve always had used ones and driven them until the repair costs were greater than replacement costs.

I’ve only ever had one new car in my life. My “new” car is actually the first one I have owned in a model year starting with a 2. New or used, I believe in driving a car until it is just too irritating to put up with any more, which is what has happened with my old Buick. It is not so much the repair costs as it is the frequency of repairs. I don’t feel that I can trust it to get me where I am going without breaking down or causing me to have a wreck.

Sort of envious of those wishing for summer, because we’re already into the unpleasant hot, humid side of summer here in the DC area. I plan to stay indoors and in denial, so I’m testing SL Boxeuses today. First impressions recall the violet facet of Bois de Violette and a summary of the osmathus-leather Daim Blond, with a sharper, almost medicinal edge. Interesting! Will report back on the dry down.

Has anyone else tried Boxeuses? I’d love to hear your impressions!

It’s Memorial Weekend here in the states, so I’m enjoying a long hot weekend in Central Florida.

    1) SOTD is Bond No 9 Bryant Park and I am wearing an oufit with pink and black.
    2) I have noticed that I match my scent to the color of my clothing. This is something that has recently evolved. Clearly the color of clothing I choose to wear each day subconciously matches my mood and the corresponding scent matches my clothing and my mood. Interesting how complex and intimate this relationship with scent becomes.
    3) The next scents I want to sample are SSS To Dream and Champagne de Bois and Lieu de Rieves. Really want to explore and venture into this line.
    4) Great news, I’ve been diligent about meditating every morning and evening; and I feel great! Also I went to the Farmers Market this morning and got some wonderful fresh veggies and fruit!

    Have a great day everyone!

The SSS line is really wonderful–well-crafted, long-lasting, and reasonably priced. Champagne de Bois is one of my very favorite perfumes from any line, but I find it a little overwhelming in hot summer weather. If by some chance you find you don’t care for it right now, save it and try it again in the fall when it is cooler.

Seconding the SSS line in general and CdB in particular. This scent has achieved HG status for me; it’s one I couldn’t be without. I’m one who wears it all summer, granted our summers aren’t *quite* as hot as where 50_Roses lives, but we’ll be in the 90’s and humid today.

Incense Pure and Cameo are also favorites of mine.

I just got back from downtown SF and have a couple of pieces of news. First is that the “discontinued” Virgilio (50ml and 100ml) and L’Eau Trois (100ml only) are back at the Diptyque boutique. They said they didn’t order them, they just show up from time to time in their shipments from the home office. Also, Frederic Malle will be at Barney’s Saturday June 18. Just stop by to reserve a place or call Cristina in the fragrance department.
