Lazy weekend poll ~ Easter basket

Posted by Robin on 23 April 2011 292 Comments

Peeps

Fill your (fantasy) Easter basket:

1. You can pick one perfume, new or old: what is it?

2. And you can have one other scented product (a candle, a body lotion, anything): what is it?

3. Your favorite candy?

4. And any random present you'd like the Easter bunny to bring you.

I feel confident (and maybe 50 Roses can confirm, as the resident chemist) that the white candy shell on Cadbury’s Mini Eggs includes powdered crack cocaine. It’s really remarkable that there’s regulation on fragrances and yet this notorious product remains innocently on store shelves!
    !_!
(That sorta looks like a bunny, right? Happy Easter, all!)

I think I am one of the few people in the world who is entirely immune to Cadbury eggs…at least, the ones w/ the white & yolk inside.

Yes, the cream eggs are a whole other matter. Those are eaten purely for nostagia in my case. However, the milk chocolate mini eggs are genuinely addictive! I have found that I can only buy one little pack at a time, or once I start eating them, there’s no stopping me! (Just the right combination of sugar, fat, and salt, according to Dr. David Kessel, who writes about engineering foods to encourage overeating!)

Marjorie Rose is correct: As delicious as M&Ms can sometimes be, the Cadbury mini candy-shell-covered milk chocolate eggs are PURE CRACK. I don’t know what it is, but they are so delicious. I love milk chocolate anyway, but there’s something special about those.

            Agreed!

Those mini eggs are almost as addictive as buying PERFUME!!!

Yes, Joe, pure chocolate crack indeed! I won’t even let myself have ONE – no bag, nothing. If that bag gets open, it’s all gone. I think they must put some narcotic in that wonderful candy shell….

      • Daisy says:
        23 April 2011 at 5:47 pm

Thank Goodness I’ve never had one…..and now I never will.
Last thing I need is another chocolate product preying on my already negligible resistance.

I join you in that, Robin. They were never part of my Easter basket haul. I think my favorites were the little solid chocolate eggs wrapped in pretty colored foil. I used to keep them
In the freezer. I also liked the Ann Page ( A&P) jelly beans because they were spicy and not fruity.

    Ooh, fun post!

I think I want a bottle of To Dream. And either a biiiig pot o’ Carnal Flower Beurre Exquise, or one of those candles Kevin reviewed the other day – the Cezanne’s studio one.

I like a good dark chocolate with crunchy bits in it (pretzel, panko, almonds, what have you), but at Easter, I must have Peeps… minimum 2, maximum 4.

However, since I DROPPED MY LAPTOP the other day and broke the screen, I’d like Peter Cottontail to bring me either another reconditioned Dell, or replace the screen on my old one.

Ooh. Sorry about the laptop! I live in fear of doing the same thing. I use mine for everything–computer, dvd player, cd player, radio–which means I walk around with it in my apartment, placing it on whatever surface is nearby. Too bad laptops are too big to fit in an Easter egg. . .maybe one will spring up between the tulips in your garden?

    2) L’Occitane Eau des Baux massage oil
    3) Tie between chocolate covered marshmallow bunnies and spicy jelly bean
    4) I want the Easter Bunny to bring me new sneakers/workout clothes to go with the exercise dvd’s I’ve finally committed to doing at home. An new ass (or just less of one?) would be nice too, but that is what the sneakers are for.

    Fun!

For one bottle of perfume I’d pick a bottle of Jubilation 25…or Dia…or Sycomore….or an older formulation Diorella. And for another scented product I’d go with one of those prohibitively expensive yet delectable-sounding Malle candles. Probably Russian Nights but they all sound great.

I’m not sure that I have a favourite candy but I like those Lindt Lindor eggs for Easter.

Random gift would be a macro lens for my camera, probably. Or a new iPad. In white.

Hope that everyone is having a lovely time and happy Easter to those who celebrate it!

    2) Some Roger & Gallet scented soaps
    3) Anything with dark chocolate, especially if it says “Godiva” on the box

Robin, here in Poland you can find one if you search for it carefully. I saw a chocolate, white chocolate and cinnamon, not so long ago. I’m sure that a mix of choco and cinnamon is also available. They’re not very expensive, we don’t have any famous candle-makers here.

Turrón lovers of the world unite! The jijona variety I like is creamy and almost tastes like halva made of cashews, but the snow-white fruit-studded version depicted in your link is equally addictive. I long to learn how to make it myself, but it looks pretty labor-intensive…..

        Robin –

The throw is impressive – but what’s more impressive is its scent; it smells PERSACKLY like a bouquet of spring flowers – so much so that I thought the bouquet of silk flowers next to it was what I was smelling (I wasn’t yet paying attention – go figure). It’s gorgeous, totally non-candle smelling. Had I disposable simoleans I would buy one for every room in the house!

I’m not a candle person but did have a chance to sniff the Malle candles at Barneys. They have them on display with glass domes covering each of the candles. You lift the glass dome and sniff inside the glass – all the beautiful fragrance is captured in the dome and it’s wonderful! It reminded me of giant brandy snifters and how the rounded glass captures the scent so well that you taste it before even taking a sip! I wish I had sniffed them all, but was on fragrance overload from a day of perfume shopping.

The candles themselves are perfect white wax poured into classic ‘Malle Orange’ glass votives. The ones on display were rather large – perhaps 6″ and, based on the amount of fragrance captured under glass, I’m sure would scent a room lit or unlit!

    3. Your favorite candy? Jordan Almonds and peanut butter M&M’s and Reeces Peanut Butter Cup

    4. And any random present you’d like the Easter bunny to bring you. I would be so happy if the bunny brought me the stone that fell off my earring the other day. Lost forever, I’m afraid, and I’ve been wearing this perfect pair of “drops” for almost three years now.

Hi Robin! Happy Easter weekend to you. Fun poll.

    1. Since it’s easter, I’d pick my favorite springy hyacinth scent: Annick Goutal Grand Amour.

    2. For fun, unsniffed, how about the Frederic Malle “Fleur Mecanique” red box diffuser in the 1er Mai (LoTV) scent? Sounds good to me right now, and seasonal!

    3. Not chocolate (the horror!), but rather a really nice Spanish turrón/nougat — a semi-soft kind made with ground almonds & honey, embedded with preserved fruit (see http://bit.ly/hRbwfw).

    4. Since we’re fantasizing, how about I channel Eartha Kitt and say “fill my basket with a duplex”…

I’m always paralyzed by this type of question: “You can pick one perfume…” I’ll think, “maybe finally PG Bois Blond or no, wait, how about Byredo Gypsy Water (based on the irrational feeling that since this perfume is “free,” I’d better choose something more expensive… ) or no, what about something new?” Enough waffling – here goes:
    1) Bois Blond because it’s a favorite and I’ve been living off tiny decants for years
    2) Atelier Grand Neroli soap
    3) Hmmm. I love dark chocolate, but really I’d prefer a small piece of key lime pie (which I am making for tomorrow) or strawberry-rhubarb pie (which I will make for my upcoming birthday!).
    4) An iPad. Or an iPhone.

Waaaay back in the day, when my allowance was 50c a week, my Dad would pay me the unheard of sum of $2.00 to make a batch. Mom wouldn’t do it (the poor woman had six kids!) as it had to be stirred until soft ball stage, about 20 minutes. The original recipe doesn’t call for peanut butter, but Dad always liked a couple of tablespoons added. Holler if you’d like the recipe!

    1. Vintage Diorissimo – I’ve only sniffed once from a new bottle. I really liked it, but I’d like to experience the greatness that everyone remembers so fondly.
    2. Bloom bath salts (I can’t remember the name of the fragrance I loved so much, but I remember energizing citrus and Rosemary). This was an old line of Margot Elena’s that was discontinued when she started Lollia and Tokyo Milk. I was given a bottle as a gift while I was in the hospital several years ago with a very serious health scare. I still have the empty bottle to inhale every once in awhile when I need a reminder to live every day as if it could be my last.
    3. Vosges Wink of the Rabbit Caramels. Actually anything by Vosges. Or any caramels. With sea salt.

What a fun poll, Robin! So what are your choices?

    1. Hmm, since we’re wishing here, I suppose I should make it worth it. By Kilian Back to Black or Hermes Osmanthe Yunnan – I have a decant so it would be nice to spray a bit more lavishly! But I would make do with some Jo Malone Assam & Grapefruit.

    2. I’m not big on body products or candles – my poor husband is sensitive to smells due to migraines, so if I were scenting the house, he’d think I was trying to kill him! But maybe he wouldn’t mind that Fireside candle they had at B&BW around Christmas – Slatkin maybe? It was very nice.

    3. Since it’s Easter, I’ll go with malted milk eggs, Reeses peanut butter eggs and buttered popcorn Jelly Bellies.

    4. Paid off credit cards would be nice!

Late reply, but I’d take some vintage Joy, a Cire Trudon or Frederic Malle candle (can’t decide!!), some weird chocolate bar, preferably one of the Dolfins that I have not tried yet, and then a perfect bathing suit (been trying them on, would give anything to just have the perfect one and not have to try any more on, what a chore!).

Happy Easter weekend, Robin–it coincides so neatly with Passover this year, and I’m still trying to make up for the over-indulgences of all the yummy, rich food at our Seder. I started to say thank you for this so wonderfully fun poll, except that all these fantastic wishes have just made my own wish list and try-list multiply several times! I have to try those FM and Cire Trudon candles, and the OJ line–bought a perfume in London about 10 years ago, but haven’t seen them here, even though I live in NY and frequent all the “B” stores. And I’m craving sweets now, having read to the bottom of this list–I’ve never tried those Cadbury minis, but they sound irresistible!

    1. Tubereuse Criminelle–doesn’t last long, but just blends so deliciously with my skin, it almost becomes part of me;
    2. FM Musc Ravageur Oil (to go with or w/out the fragrance, which I love);
    3. Dark chocolate with caramel and sea salt–I love the Knipperschmidt ones with different salts, but I’d love to taste the Chokaria ones that Monkeytoe mentioned above; alternatively, dark chocolate-covered grapefruit rinds–I had it once several years ago, and can still taste it, more piquant than orange–and I love the scent of grapefruit;
    4. Fantasy time: a single man as endearingly loveable, good-natured, snuggly, and tractable, as our mini Australian Labradoodle (and who is also self-supporting), OR: Next year’s elections bring legislators to Washington who care more about their constituents’ well-being than about their own egos or being re-elected. Alternative fantasy wish: ALL fragrance reformulations would disappear, and ALL perfumes would instantly revert to original, vintage formulations!

Hi all and Happy Easter if you celebrate!

    1. I’d choose Ruffles by Oscar de la Renta, it reminds me of my dearly departed Grandmother.

    2. My scented product would be a Manuel Canova candle, Empire Celeste is my favorite, it has wallflower, rose, violets, it’s an amazing candle!

    3. I’m more of a savory person, I adore salty/garlicky/vinegary stuff (fried pickles are da bomb!)… but I really love CocoaBela Chocolates, my faves are the sea salt dark chocolate coated caramels, balsamic with raspberry truffles, their mango cremes are fabby too!

    4. My gift would be to keep my job, we’re looking at layoffs this new fiscal year. It’s quite scary.

    1)Clive Christian C
2)Dont have a candle in mind, so will go with Iris Silver Mist (still not yet sampled)
3)Right now I don’t want to think of chocolate and candies until Passover is over so, vetiver pour elle would be a great alternative!
4)People learn to be as good as they can, so that all pain and suffering will be removed form the world, and if it isn’t on this weeks agenda, I wish for all of you, all that u wish for yourselves!(as long as it is good)

Smokytoes, I have to find the Cocoabella chocs that you describe, especially the sea salt/caramel ones, my fave! I love savory, too, and often add sea salt to flavorful sweets like dark chocolate and mustard to almost anything.

Thank you, Hongkongmom, for your generous wish for all of us–and your global wish as well. I hope you have a sweet Pesach (with or without chocolate and candies)!

I don’t think wishing for the ability to fly is frivolous: it is mythic and universal, and as deeply imbedded in our subconscious as almost anything. To escape, to transcend, to be free–thank you for reminding me of it–a great wish.

    Oooh. Fantasy fun.

    1. Iris Poudre. I found another sample yesterday (I’d drained my first) and fell in love with its joyful prettiness all over again. It’s especially nice in warm weather, I think.
    2. OJ Frangipani bath oil, to go with my EDP.
    3. A really good eclair, I think!
    4. Thesis.

Yes! I don’t get comments about it being hyper-girly – it’s womanly, but classic and not too sweet, and has a lovely soft radiance. I really do think it blooms well in the sunshine.

    1. Ormande Jayne Woman. Tried to order some the other day but got caught up in ‘international credit card validation’ purgatory.

    2. FM L’Eau D’Hiver perfume oil.

    3. Sees candy! I only find this at Christmas time. Their key lime truffles are a favorite!

    4. The most perfect sofa. I finally found it but it was too expensive. After a bit of saving and lots of hemming and hawing (OMG it was expensive!), I finally went back to purchase: Only, it was gone and the manufacturer has discontinued that style.

Thank you, Rappleyea–and I am also salivating at so many of these descriptions of fave candies/treats. I love penuche, and like your Dad (I love that he paid you a lot to make it for him, too–so sweet!), think it’s much better with peanut butter, which is one of my five favorite foods–I’ve been noshing on it for almost half a century! My Dad used to have a sandwich every Saturday composed of rye toast and scrambled eggs with lettuce, tomato, and bacon–and peanut butter! So, I come by it honestly, I guess.

Also, I am a little embarrassed, but I don’t know who/what “SSS” is. I’m intrigued by the white floral you mentioned when it’s ready–nothing could be too jasminey for me, especially a big, heady, indolic jasmine!

Happy Easter–the weather here in NY is finally cooperating!

I can’t believe there are so many penuche lovers on here! Great!! Your dad’s sandwich sounds interesting – wonderful memories.

Go to sonomascentstudio.com to see a complete listing and description of her scents. She sells on-line through her site and also through indiescents.com. She may be in one or two brick and mortar stores in Ca., but I’m not sure.

Thanks, Odonata9! I’ve seen some reviews, but never tried any, or seen them at my “B”s–Barneys, Bendels, or Bergdorfs, where I do most of my initial perfume-trying–(but no longer buying, thanks to learning about decants from this blog!). Do you recommend any for a lover of jasmine/gardenia/tuberose/honeysuckle (or amber)?

Yeah, you pretty much have to order from her site. I’ve only tried a few, but most of her stuff seems to be woods, resins, incense, etc. Hopefully some others will chime in. There was just a review here of her newest one. I love Tabac Aurea, a tobacco-y amber – you may like that one!

SmokeyToes, I know exactly what you mean–I feel the same way about Jacques Torres hot chocolate (practically spoonable, and the “wicked” and coffee ones are addictive) and MarieBelle aztec/maya dark chocolate–one 70% unsweetened but with milk of some sort, and the other 75% cocoa but sweetened with a flavorful cane sugar–and Jer’s incredibly yummy peanut butter bars in both milk and dark. Is Cocoabella local to the SF area?

I posted above, but will repeat because you’ll never find it:

Late reply, but I’d take some vintage Joy, a Cire Trudon or Frederic Malle candle (can’t decide!!), some weird chocolate bar, preferably one of the Dolfins that I have not tried yet, and then a perfect bathing suit (been trying them on, would give anything to just have the perfect one and not have to try any more on, what a chore!).

    2. Even though I don’t wear Chanel No. 5, I remember the old body lotion smelling amazing.

    3. Your favorite candy? ZOTZ: hard candy on the outside, “fizzy” sour candy that oozes out once you get to it.

    4. $5,000K gift certificate for any vintage perfume purchases I’d like to make on eBay? 😉

Not sure about the No 5 lotion, but the body creme is fabulous. A very good and long-lasting version of No 5, leaning in the direction of the EDP rather than the EDT. The glass jar it comes in is film-star gorgeous too.

Robin, for what it’s worth, I don’t think you’ll be sorry if you buy the Cire Trudon candle that you finally decided on. You can enjoy it for a good while as you are deciding which FM candle to choose for as a future treat – the FMs all sound so enticing that I’ve never been able to pick one for myself even though I’m convinced they must be exceptionally excellent. I’m sure one of the reasons I ordered the Atelier Cezanne candle is that there is only ONE – although Kevin and Denyse get credit, too.
