Book Club: Remembering Smell by Bonnie Blodgett

Posted by Cheryl on 18 October 2010 46 Comments

Remembering Smell book coverauthor Bonnie Blodgett

In Remembering Smell, Bonnie Blodgett interlaces her own frightening story of smell loss with a primer on the olfactory system and olfactory disorders of all kinds, from phantosmia to anosmia. Her title foreshadows the many connections between smell and memory explored in the book. Part personal memoir, part investigation of the relationship between smell and brain function, the book also offers an elegy or memorial to the lost sense of smell.

To get you started, I’ll begin with a few topics and questions that came to mind as I was reading. Feel free to ask your own questions and to open up new topics…

French perfume-maker Jean-Paul Guerlain faces prosecution by anti-racist groups after telling a television interviewer that he “worked like a n*****” to produce one of his most successful scents.

— From Guerlain heir in racism storm at RFI. You can also read more at CNN. As it happens, I am on the road today so will be slow to answer comments; since this news is likely to upset many people, I do most kindly ask that everyone keep the conversation civil.

Update: for the most part people have remained civil, but the conversation is getting a little frayed around the edges and lots of varying viewpoints have already been expressed, so I'm closing the comments.

Gorilla Perfume at Lush Imogen RoseGorilla Perfume at Lush B Scent

If you’re a long-time Lush customer, you’ll recognize some familiar “faces” in the Gorilla Perfume at Lush product line: this Lush-owned company brings together a few fragrances that have been in and out of rotation at Lush, several fragrances originally offered by B Never Too Busy To Be Beautiful (the now-defunct cosmetics-and-fragrance offshoot of Lush), and a generous handful of new scent creations, all of them unconventional fragrances blended from largely natural ingredients. When I visited the traveling “fragrance gallery” staged by Gorilla Perfume and began to familiarize myself with the complete line of scents, my usual instincts drew me towards two rose-based compositions…
