On nights of the full moon

Posted by Robin on 27 October 2010 10 Comments

Costumed as sinister witches or swashbuckling pirates, customers from all over Los Angeles gathered at Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab, or BPAL, to indulge and sample the hundreds of scents that are available only online except on nights of the full moon.

— From Come, all ye goths, and get a whiff of the darkest of scents at the LA Times.

I would love to go to one of these! My inner Goth and inner child would love to dress up- especially at Halloween. Plus, it would be nice to have a physical experience of the frags as the website can get overwhelming- I’ve lost hours on there!

I bet it’s great fun! Agree about the website…it’s overkill for me.

They’re going to be doing future full-moon nights at the horror bookstore Dark Delicacies in Burbank — that place is worth a trip all by itself!

Has anyone tried any of this stuff? I love the way they all get glorious stories and names – but how good are the scents?

I have tried some. So far, nothing I’d buy, but they’re fun — not sure the BPAL brand would appeal to your average perfumista but I can see why many people make BPAL a hobby.

I think their marketing is genius but to me the scents have an unrelenting sameness after a while. There are a few standouts, but in general I find the line is heavy-handed and lacks quality, intricacy, and depth.

I recently bought a BPAL frag on Ebay: Krampus (a special Yuletide 2006) that I’ve been wanting forever. The scent is birch twigs, burning coal and hint of spice. Krampus is a devil like character who travels with St. Nicholas and naughty children get hit with birch switches and get coal instead of candy. I collect Krampus items and NEEDED this fragrance! Ha

*sigh* I used to be so into Halloween. I waited for it to come around every year with the breathless anticipation most kids reserve for December. This year I couldn’t even get orange string lights up. Well, there’s still a few days. Maybe I can get my a– in gear. I feel so old!!!
