Lazy Thursday poll ~ open thread, mid-July 2010

Posted by Robin on 15 July 2010 360 Comments

The usual open thread: talk about anything you like — the perfume you’re wearing today, the perfume you're hoping to try soon, the last perfume you changed your mind about, whatever.

Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

SOTD – Coup de Foudre from a sample. Am wearing a “crisp white shirt” for the office so it seemed appropriate. Not likely to purchase, though. The slightly sour berry notes just don’t suit me. On the other hand, DelRae is offering a free jar of cream with every matching bottle edp purchased thru the 18th – now that’s tempting. Just trying to decide, especially for the cream – Amoureuse or Bois de Paradis?

Wow – wish I’d known about that. I just ordered BdP Body Creme from BH, having tried samples of the fragrance and the creme first. I absolutely love it and highly recommend it, however, I’ve heard the Amoureuse creme is also really great! No help at all, am I?

That was the othe option – ordering from BH with the current discount promo. Cheaper if you only want the cream – and am currently broke…

Coup de Foudre was sour on me too, but I just chalked it up to not being a big rose person. DelRae claims it’s a super-realistic fresh-picked rose, but I didn’t get that at all — glad I have company, anyway!

Not trying to increase your lemmings, Daisy, but I do have a tiny pot of BdP body cream. It’s a rich, non-greasy formula and smells exactly like the edp…..

LOL —I’m not sure it’s possible to INCREASE my lemmings…I think that’s at full capacity as it is! The only thing that can tamp them down is the fact that I’m pretty much all spent out….the bank account has a hollow echo…..

I adore Amoureuse! There’s something slightly off with Bois for my nose…but on the other hand, sometimes creams and lotions smell a little different than the perfume.

I have inner conflicts over BdP from time to time. It’s gorgeous, but feels like I’m wearing a candle or potpourri scent instead of a perfume….

I just received this yesterday…it is lighter than I expected, a nice mix of woods. The drydown was almost completely vetiver, but overall, it is decent. CdG is a hit and miss line for me. It is over 90 degrees here, so I am looking forward to trying it again in cooler weather.

SOTD is L’Heuer Bleue. It’s funny because this particular fragrance was one that I didn’t initially take to. I kept sampling it and passing it by. When I did finally break down and buy a bottle I still wasn’t sure if I truly liked it. I liked the idea of it, though, so kept with it. It’s become almost a staple now, and the one I’ve been wearing the most lately. It seems very frozen though, something that never truly blossoms but at the same time I think that’s what I like about it as well. It’s like a moment trapped in time.

It’s extremely hot & humid here in the capital region, weather I certainly couldn’t imagine wearing anything too heavy in and yet while walking to the Metro this morning I was hit by the wafting of Poison. So I’m curious, what non-warm weather suited scents do you still wear when it’s ridiculously hot outside?

I was going to say – That’s a pretty sultry scent to be wearing today down there! I bought L’HB edp on a whim at Saks 12+ yrs ago because I trusted my then Guerlain SA, still the best I’ve ever worked with. It was far from my favorite at the time. I don’t wear it often because it’s such a BIG fragrance, but I do savor it when I wear it and the CEO loves it.
You’d be surprised the non-warm weather scents you can get away with on a hot day. My criteria is that it has to be “dry” – last summer, I wore Taur’s Incense Rose and it was just fine. Probably anything with a healthy dose of sandalwood may fit the bill because sandalwood has a “cooling” effect in the heat.

Walking to the Metro in the heat! Ah, memories! Especially the ozone action days…
Down here in Florida, the nation’s steamroom, I was surprised to find Havana Vanille worked really well on a sticky day. It’s named “Havana” so I guess that’s no surprise…anyway, it was interesting enough in the AC but when the hot stick air hit me…boom! The tobacco notes just exploded! So that’s a hot weather buddy for me.
      Stay cool in DC!

OOh! I just won a vintage bottle of L’Heuer Bleue on eBay, and I’m really excited about it.
I love to wear non-summer scents in summer, especially arabian attars. Just a tiny bit, and they explode into a warm, velvet cloud that just hums on the skin…
Rose, oudh, sandalwood, the usual suspects : )

L’Heure Bleue is a recent discovery for me. Those classic Guerlains are killing me. Seriously! Few fragrances compare on skin.
My favorite Guerlain in these hot days is Chamade… and I just made my first eBay fragrant purchase… A 1/4 full 30 ml bottle of Vol de Nuit extrait…without box…I am crossing my fingers!
Anyway, in these hot days, wether I take the metro or my bike, I am favoring my best fragrant friends: Carnal Flower, Beyond Love, une fleur de cassie, and surprisingly I am really enjoying some Chanels: Beige and Bois des lies, the latter is a complete rediscovery…thanks to the heat, I think.
I fear my nose is getting really very bourgeois, must shake things up a bit!

We had all this horrible hot dry weather for like 2 weeks and I was regularly dousing myself in edc’s. Then suddenly it rained and got all cool one day. I really needed something different and reached for the L”Heure Bleue edp, which I wore and reapplied all day long on Saturday. It was heavenly!

Great question, Klytaemnestra! I’m about to try BK Back to Black and the Ouds. There is an appealing dryness/lightness to these Kilians that may enable them to work in any season, even though I think of the notes more as fall/winter ones. I’ve been wearing them at home in the AC, but that walk to the metro IS the real test.

Yesterday i had a sudden craving for L’Instant. I don’t wear it often, sometimes it’s plain sweet and flat on me . But yesterday It was deep and interesting and really bloomed on my skin, and it was very hot and humid evening. So, i don’t think we have to follow some hard rules concerning what perfume suits what weather. If you feel like it wear it! 🙂

I wore LHB to an Irish festival last weekend, where it competed with the scents of sunscreen and beer. Picture a small group of insane grown women among a medium-sized group of teenagers, 95% girls, who all registered for the outdoor dance competition because we’re determined to promote at least one stubborn dance even though this festival is always either blazing hot or pouring with rain. (This year we hit both with a midafternoon thunderstorm.) Classic backstage outfit: dance dress unzipped to waist to reveal tank top, curly wigs and tiaras on the girls, curly real hair going wild in the heat on me, white cotton socks, Crocs over soft shoes. I might have looked ridiculous but I smelled great.

SOTD is Nuit de Tubereuse which I find oddly addictive. It’s like Indian food which I really like, but it isn’t my all-time favorite type of food, BUT I often crave it and must have it. NdT wasn’t love at first smell, but it got under my skin (so to speak) and now haunts me to the point that I might just have to buy a bottle. Unless there’s a split out there needing a participant 😉

Anyone else find themselves craving scents that aren’t on their holy grail list?

I’m suddenly loving tuberose, which is a complete turnaround. I never thought of myself as a flower person in general, or a tuberose lover in particular. OK, I did wear the original Chloe decades ago, but that was clearly an aberration. I dislike Fracas and am immune to Tuberose Criminelle and Carnal Flower. But suddenly I’m sleeping with AG Songes, keep BK Beyond Love in my purse, find myself considering a natural, HdP Vamp a NY, and I’m also falling for Nuit de Tubereuse. I can’t believe I’m saying this!

Hello everyone, I love an open thread!

We are having a few days of cold, rainy weather so I’ve been wearing some heavier scents. I re-visited Amouage Epic a few days ago. Still no real love but I realised that it reminded me of Attrape Coeur. Anyone else find this?

SOTD, for the second day in a row, is SL Bois de Violette. SL is one of those brands whose scents I often like but never enough to want a bottle. With BdV I think I’ve met a Lutens that I can imagine owning.

Hello Everyone – today is an at the office day and because I have decided that as long as I don’t wear a sillage monster, anything goes re: perfume ..so am wearing just a dab of FM L’Eau d’Hiver. Can’t stop smelling my own wrists…mmm love, love it!

I do have a question for anyone who cares to respond. I have been going through various perfume lines, trying them ALL whether I think I will like them or not. So how do you evaluate a sample? Do you all have a strict method? or does it just hit you right away – like or not to like? I have been struggling with this a little. Because I am finding the longer I wear something…like 2 or 3 days in row…it can grow on me…ones I thought were scrubbers are making me re-think them and getting new samples of the same, just to be sure! Am I crazy? Have I gone over the perfumed edge? Please help.

Before the number of launches got so overwhelming, I tried to test everything 3-4 times before I gave up. Now, no way…I dismiss things that smell generic or boring right away. If it seems interesting, I keep going. I do find it helps to skip days (or even weeks) and then go back to something with a fresh mind.

Thank you all for the great advice! I like the idea of spreading it out instead of 2 or 3 days in a row. And taking into consideration the seasons is great also. I kind of put mine in a rotation -more of a pending pile than purgatory. I used to keep lots of notes on fragrances (not so much anymore), and I would mark if I liked it or not – very causal type of way. And I would always naturally remember if I really like something outright, as it goes on a to swap/buy list. Unless it is a total scrubber, which is rare for me, or one I know is not my taste, which go in a ziplock purgatory, the others I am indifferent/lukewarm about go in this glass dish. I will revisit fragrances every few months or so and then test them in different weather, etc, to make sure that my impression wasn’t biased by something other than just outright dislike. There are a few fragrances I’ve come back around to after having lukewarm first impressions, that I’ve come to love, notabley Mitsouko and Noir Epices. But now I have a pretty rigorous standard to buy something, so even if I think something is good, rarely do I want to buy it unless it really knocks me socks off. A lot of time I will try to get fragrances that are good, but not HG status, through swaps as we all have something someone else wants!

Why the ziplock bags, do samples evaporate or dry out a bit over time if left in the open air?

I’ve been storing mine in these small Turkish coffee cups I’ve got, but I do notice the samples smell…

I have two zippies: one for the ones I want to swap away, and one for seasonal sample favs that I’ll regularly rotate into my purse.
Putting the ones I am lukewarm about or want to revisit in a ziplock is just easier. That way when I am searching for one of them to retest or swap away, I can find it easily. The ones I like or want to keep for “reference” are all stored away in organza baggies by house in a nice train case. “Solo” fragrance samples without housemates are all stacked up in those small jewelry boxes in the train case. I also keep an inventory of the ones I want to keep for reference or b/c I like them. The ones I don’t want to keep – why waste the time on ineventory?

I’ve only ever had ONE regular sample vial evaporate on me, but I have had a number of those dorky snap on 2.5 ml spray samples evaporate away. I am certainly glad that I didn’t have anything particularly valuable in those little spray decanters! In any case, I don’t t hink storing in ziplock would prevent evaporation, as at the molecular level they are not really airtight.

Oh, I forgot to mention, there must be some nominal evaporation as my train case has a lovely mixed perfumey smell – and there are a few samples I have that you can actually smell through the plastic top. But most of them are nice and sound.

That’s a great system! I don’t have more than about 20 samples now, but I think I’ll have to keep an inventory too because it’s hard to remember what exactly I’ve got.

      • bergere says:
        15 July 2010 at 9:04 pm

My method is quite like yours, Anns, but you’ve expressed it really well! There are usually a fair amount of scrubbers that get tossed in the “reference only” pile, and an even smaller number of “love at first sniff”s. The rest are perhaps the most interesting: I’ll try one or two every day for a few days, to see what they resemble, try to identify how the notes react with each other, try to classify them in my mind. Then I write a “personal review” and move onto something else–unless someone here mentions one of them, then I’ll happily revisit it!

I wear a sample for three days in a row, then jot some notes down in this word doc I’ve got going for perfume… I’ve had different kinds of experiences: a few times I’ve sworn I loved something at first sniff, but then I got a bit less excited about it on the second and third try, other times I hated a scent so much I dreaded wearing it on the second day, then as time went on I found myself not minding it (though it’s never gone from total hate to total love.)

I’m not one to follow the crowd, but I do keep on trying with scents that have legions of rabid followers. Maybe I’m just pig-headed: I don’t want to give up until I figure out what’s so darned great about the scent. STILL trying to figure that out about Mitsouko! The non-legendary scents that don’t immediately work on me get dismissed pronto — life’s too short to keep flogging a dead horse.

My rec, if you haven’t done so already, to deal with the Mitsouko conundrum is to get your hands on some edp or extrait. I had a lot of trouble with it when I was testing the edt. As soon as I tried the edp, I was a goner. The extrait is even softer and more diffuse.

Oh, me too – once I got hold of some Mitsy edp and found that I didn’t care much for it, I stopped trying so hard. There are other Guerlains that I hated HATED in edt but enjoy very much in the stronger concentrations, but sadly, Mitsouko has not played nice with me.

I found that I started getting Mitsouko once I got to grips with ‘easier’ chypres – namely 31 RC and Jubilation and, to a slightly lesser degree, AdP Profumo. Then a vintage Mitsouko sample landed on my lap and I thought “hey, I think things are starting to click into place” so I went out and tried the (modern) extrait. It’s still not a must have for me but I do find myself reaching for my sample from time to time.

It’s good to have other big chypres to compare it. Vintage always helps, but then sometimes comes the disappointment too b/c its hard to get if you fall in love. See, for me Jubilation is MAJOR and I find it hard to wear. Chypres are tough for sure, but I think that is partially what brings all the pleasure and love once they come around.

Jub25 is a major love for me but I’ve no trouble wearing it, thankfully. And I totally agree that while chypres can be temperamental, when they do work, they are absolutely spectacular. A good portion of my absolute favourites are chypres – 31 RC, Jubilation, Bandit…

AdP Profumo is my HG chypre. It seems so perfectly balanced, and it’s SO beautiful! I need to give Mitsouko some more wears. I appreciate it but don’t know whether or not it will be love. 🙂

Profumo is great, isn’t it? I find it very plush so it works particularly well in the winter and I just love the plum in it. I think Mitsouko is a little more austere by comparison (less so in extrait, perhaps).

          • Haunani says:

Plush is a good descriptor! And I love the plum, too!

I do like many chypres (31RC, Bandit, Colony, even Sous le Vent at times) but for some reason Mitsouko just doesn’t smell right to me. I also realized that it conjures up bad associations — someone I knew long ago wore Mitsouko — and I think that problem is unsurmountable!

Seems like I get on very well with floral chypres, but the fruity ones just make me feel as if I’ve eaten something that disagreed with me.

I don’t have to love everything.

N., I know what you mean about not giving up on understanding some of the classics. I have some moments of wondering if some things are just a case of the Emperor’s New Perfume, or if it’s something I actually will come around eventually to appreciate. I have to say, though, that I’ve noticed one of two things will happen if I try over and over to “get” a fragrance: either my tastes will have changed enough that I suddenly love it or at least appreciate the structure of it, OR I am never going to like it. It’s more often than not the latter that happens. I figure if I still don’t love, say, Jicky after three years of trying, it’s never going to happen.

My 13 year old loves Mitsouko..which pretty much dumbfounded me…just because typically at that age, it’s bath and body works or some britney spears nightmare they go after. So I asked her what it was that she liked so much about it., and she says to me…”well…at first to me it smells like I’m hiking through a forest..smelling the trees, and moss, leaves…then it’s like you stopped for a picnic in the middle of the trees…and have a wonderful glass of sweet tea piled full with lemon slices, and a nice bowl of over-ripe sweet peach cobbler.” I couldn’t argue that her logic was flawed… for 13 she does seem to have the ability to pick out various notes that some people may miss… just last night she declared within 3 seconds of sniffing she liked the chocolate note in Missoni.

My daughter was the same way —and at 16 was (I’m certain) the only girl in the high school in Guerlain, Chanel and Amouage, while the others were dousing themselves in B&BW Putrid Amber….I this in your future. Just wait until she informs you that she requires a bottle of Bel Respiro or OJ Ta’if or Hermessence Ambre Narguile…..arg!

I’m quite similar to AnnS. I tend to test most things a couple of times but not necessarily on consecutive days. Some things work better depending on the season so if I’m unsure then I’ll put a sample aside and return to it at a later date. On rare occasions you encounter either a complete scrubber or something that inspires instant love, but at least those are quite easy.

I like to sniff lots but I buy few bottles as I’d rather have a smaller collection. I’m not really into decants/splits because if I really love something then I want a bottle and if I don’t absolutely adore it then the existing sample is usually sufficient.

      This is a great sub-topic!

I don’t usually love anything immediately—it’s either “interesting” (as Robin noted” or not. Interesting stuff gets worn until I decide whether or not I like/love it, not-interesting goes in my swap pile.

Very rarely, I love/hate something right from the gate:

First, I must confess…I am a business analyst by profession…so my system may seem like overkill to some. What seemed blasphemous to some, I actually enjoyed the 1-5 rating system that is used by LT and TS in Perfumes – The Guide.. so I changed over to using that for myself. I keep a spreadsheet of all my fragrances (and one for a ‘wish list to try”) also. I keep the name, house, official notes, and my rating and comments on it, if it was in PTG, then I also make a note of their rating and comments. Recently, I have also been keeping notes from blog reviews for each as well.
Then I have white paper bags labeled with the numbers 5, 4, 3, etc. and I put all my samples and small decants in each bag based on the corresponding rating I gave it. I like the white paper bag for a couple of reasons…#1, I can write on the back of the bag the name of each sample as I drop them in, it will help with the sunlight not getting to them and causing them to turn so easily, and I know immediately what my impressions of the scent was based on which bag it’s in. I also keep one for true masculines that I would never wear, and a purgatory bag for ones I can’t decide on. I must admit….sometimes after resniffing a sample…it gets promoted or demoted to another bag.

I like your system! I’ve always kind of grouped mine by house, but the past year I was really considering whether I should regroup them by season or by type – so I’d have all the chypres together, etc. But sorting them all by their ranking is really an interesting method.

The scents I’ve brought along for my NJ beach vacation: Carthusia Via Cammerelle (a new discovery, it’s great but short-lived), Philosykos, Escale Pondichery (decided I LOVE this), Melograno, Jardin a l Mousson, KenzoAir. Also, Guerlain Eau Imperiale, which I decided is too blah for me, but good in the heat.

Anticipating receipt in a couple weeks of some CdG Wonderwood, unsniffed (among several other decants incl. Stephen Jones!), and planning to split a small, discounted Iris Nobile with a friend — yet another great iris.

    1) finally bought Cuir de Russie. Love.

    2) Both Nuit de Tubereuse and Amaranthine both turn sugary sweet on me. And here I thought this whole skin chemistry thing wasn’t really true. It is. NdT = sugar melon. Where’s the tuberose? Tenacious as hell, too.

    3) Tilda Swinton Like This- bought it and was thrilled to find a skanky musk note a la L’Air de Rien in it. Yay!

    4) Sampled things from The Different Company for the first time this weekend. Fun stuff! Sublime Balkiss made me laugh out loud in delight, loved Oriental Lounge, learned what bergamot was thanks to Divine Bergamot, and enjoyed the rooty true iris opening of Bois d’Iris. Good line! I’m a fan!

I ended up going with the big ol’ bottle of the EdT, which I am ok with. I know there’s that extrait out there, and perhaps someday I will get over to Bergdorf in NYC to try it out. Thing is, I don’t think either are going to broadcast their presence, just by nature of the scent, so I’m cool with an EdT. Ideally I’d like to have some extrait to layer with the EdT!

I’ve had problems with defective sprayers too, as have others. Try unscrewing it, taking the tube off, and then putting the tube back on. You might not want to “prime the pump” next time — it’s nice to test it for the recipients, but it’s probably more prone to leaking in transit.

I think she meant not to prime the pump as in not to pump the sprayer once you’ve got it put together – you might have done that to test to see if it’s spraying, but it could cause some leakage. Does that make sense?

Yes, thank you, it makes a lot of sense. And yes, of course I did it to be sure that everything is right for my split partner. I will make sure and pour it into a different decant now so that it won’t leak.

I’m going to also warn not to do any test spritzes. They most definitely do leak if you do. The only time I ever had anyone complain that something leaked was when I tested it first. I’ve also only ever gotten one decant from anyone that didn’t work, but I tried often enough that it finally submitted. I think if you did, by chance, send someone a bottle that didn’t end up spraying, you could always send them another bottle that you did try first (if it’s empty you obviously don’t have to worry about leakage). Perfumistas are a pretty forgiving bunch. As long as we get our perfume fix one way or another, we’re happy. 🙂

I’ve been sniffing swiftly along my way down the list of “100 scents every perfumista should try –” some I’ve worn for several days, others I’ve just quickly sampled by dabbing some on the back of my hand… I sometimes wear two or three perfumes a day now, as I dab lightly and most are Edt’s anyways…

The ones I’ve worn for several days in a row were Coco Mademoiselle, which was nice but maybe a bit too sweet, DKNY’s Be Delicious, a nice green apples scent that works well on humid days but isn’t anything special, and EL Pleasures, which wouldn’t have been bad but I got this soap note at some points in the drydown that I couldn’t stand. There was also Pure White Linen, which turned sour on me and gave me my first major perfume headache 😉 And LL’s Eau du Desir, which was too sweet for me without the interest of the original LL. I also got a little bottle of Yves Rocher Pur Desir de Lilas on someone’s recommendation here, but all I could smell was pure alcohol, then a brief powder-lilac, then it faded. I guess all the more to appreciate En Passant if I ever get my hands on it…

There were others I quickly tried with a dab on my hand, mostly because I was dying of curiosity about them, and because I got really bored after a couple days of wearing florals and needed something else.

They were: No. 5, which I tried long ago and dismissed as a powdery old-lady scent. I didn’t love it this time, but I didn’t find it nearly as bad as I remembered. Opium: nice, but somehow boring? I think quite a few women wore this around me while I was growing up, and I blank out wiht it like I do with CKs: I’ve just smelled them so often that I can no longer really appreciate them… Shalimar made me gag and smelled really foul on me (I’ll see if this opinion gets better after I wear it over several days.)

Did I really LOVE anything I tried?

Poison, Rodrigues for her and Philosykos were all INCREDIBLE, and fully deserving of all caps. The later probably impressed me the most, it has this top note that smells like you’re laying in the park smelling the leaves, grass and the dirt, and then it changes into this sweet (but not fruity or floral) goodness that my nose can’t really describe in much detail. Glorious stuff.

Just received a Luckyscent sample suite in which I ordered enough samples to tide me over. I’m super broke right now so I’m holding off on any bottles.

ELd’O Like That– nice but a strangely gourmand/savory. Reminds me of curried potato pastries one gets at Thai restaurants. On the first try I loved it but it’s quite quite strange and I might not be so infatuated now.

Andy Tauer Un Rose Chypre– Well done but so reminiscent of Habanita that I thought it was mislabeled.

Boudicca Wode– Beautiful. I might be putting a bottle of this on my Buy List, whenever I can get to it.

VC&A Muguet Blanc– I love it! And it’s doing really well in Houston’s humid heat. I would definitely be saving for a bottle if it wasn’t so expensive.

CdG Red Series: Harissa– Not nearly as red pepper-y as I was hoping for. Feels like Timbuktu after too much plastic surgery.

And that’s been my scented week. 😛

I think your URC must have been mislabeled – it is so far away from Habanita that I can’t even imagine a smell-alike situation, unless something blocked the aromas and you are only getting leather in the base. URC is all heavy spices, rich rose and leathery stuff. H is all powdery smoke and leather…. Hmm.

My Habanita doesn’t sound like yours. There is powder but it’s got a rich, almost syrupy rose and a light layer of vetiver underneath. The only reason I think it IS Tauer is because there’s a bit of his spice mixture right up top, the one that’s also in Vetiver Dance.

Also, Ann, I was locked out of my hotmail account awhile back and I’d totally forgotten that I was supposed to email you back about the Nahema. I’m so sorry. If you’re still interested, give me a shout:

I’m going to agree that URC and Habanita seem light years away from each other. But I also have to say that when I first tried URC and just dabbed some on, it smelled VERY different from when I finally got a decant and sprayed it on. So who knows. I actually have gotten stuff that was mislabeled before. It does happen.

Hot weather continues unabated so I’m wearing what are to me hot-weather scents. This morning: Montale Attar, a ludicrously beautiful rose-sandalwood. Post-shower, Demeter Vetiver, bright and grassy and perfect for the heat.

I never was a summer person. I can’t wait for fall so I can start wearing all those dark warm autumnal things I love the most.

I’m *sort of* with all of you. I love deep, warm scents, rich chypres (can’t understand what’s wrong with wearing Bandit in 90 degree weather), incense… And I love winter clothes. Give me my boots, a long black dress, and my leopard coat and I’m happy. But I love summer! I suppose I could be like Stevie Nicks and just stay in air conditioning all day (with a fireplace blazing), but I’m not up for being that wasteful.

SOTD is JM White Jasmine & Mint — this is such a humidity-friendly scent and I just really enjoy it. In fact, I’m actually draining my bottle, which is quite a rarity.

I’ve also been enjoying my sample of Micallef Note Vanillee (thanks, Daisy!). This so lovely and I’m sure I’ll wear it more in the fall. I find it very similar to Laurence Dumont Tendre Madeleine, which I also like very much.

SOTD: Institut Très Bien Cologne à la Française. This one lasts a long time on me for a cologne. 4 hours and counting! Beautifully soft citrus, magnolia, iris scent. Love it, and perfect in this hot weather!

Perfumes I’m hoping to try: TDC’s De Bachmakov, and some old ones on my list – Hermes Vanille Galante and Osmanthe Yunnan. I’m curious about the rest of the the TDC line as well. Haven’t tried any yet.

Perfume I’m curious about: Thierry Mugler’s Womanity. Bought a small bottle of it and have worn it a couple of times. Curious what others think of this fragrance. Have you tried it? What do you think? It’s strange, but I think I like it.

Funny story: Decanted some of my fragrances into sample vials to send to a friend. First time I’d done it. Thought it would be a disaster, but it was easier and quicker than I thought. All proud of myself. Labeled everything and wrote up a note listing all of the scents, etc. Well, I placed the package of samples in the box with some packing peanuts. While I was writing the note, I pulled out the samples to make sure I’d listed all of them in my note. Placed the note on top, sealed up and addressed the box, and dropped the box at the post office. Went grocery shopping. Got home. Saw the package of vials sitting on my desk. I’d forgotten to put them back in the box!!!! ACK!!!!! Was able to get the post office guy to retrieve the box for me. He laughed. Of course, I didn’t tell him that it was PERFUME that I had forgotten to pack up. 😉

I sampled Womanity a week or two ago, just on paper. I couldn’t stop sniffing it – it was something salty, almost like popcorn. But then combined with the sweetness, I think it was too much. But hey, they have 10 ml bottles, so why not?

Speaking of, get your free Womanity sample here: http://esampling.womanity.com/us/
I still haven’t gotten mine, but I do hope they still have some!

I’m so glad I’m not the only one that does things like that. I sent two packages of perfume out of the US a while back (I mean, no, I didn’t! Shhh!!) and got there to find out I had packaged everything wrong. So they were extremely accommodating at the post office, and gave me another box to use without having to actually unpack anything… So far, so good… Except dumbass here addressed both packages to the same person, and now had no idea which package was which. It all worked out, but I was clearly annoying other people in line, and the postal employees were significantly less patient by the time I left there.

I usually don’t get excited about iris, though I liked bois d’iris (both the VC&A and TDC).
A couple of days ago I tested Chanel La Pausa, and LOVED the way the iris had been rendered buttery (smooth and silky, really luxurious). It would have been a full bottle purchase, but it really didn’t last enough to justify the splurge – and usually I don’t mind low lasting power.
Do you know a fragrance with a similar understated creamy iris?
Are Mythique or Iris Silver Mist similar in feel?
    Thanks!

ISM — no, extremely vegetal. Mythique — iris used in a similar way, but not a substitute for La Pausa at all (and not so focused on iris anyway).

bit late, but have you tried Prelude to love (By Kilian)? My favorite iris is Iris taizo (now oriental, parfumerie general), has huge staying power on me, but I’ve heard other opinions, and anyways, the iris note is rather subdued

Hi Bee, Thanks, I think I have a sample of prelude to love somewhere…
I never really tested it (I smelled the vial and feared it would be too sweet, but that’s not a fair assessment!)
I’ll try it out. And Iris Taizo, when I come by a PG counter.
I really loevd the butteriness of la pausa, it was the first time I got that effect in an Iris perfume!

ops, I wouldn’t define them buttery, but they are different takes on iris! (no vegetable-carrot ) , mabe because they don’t start off typically, Prelude to love is kind of citrussy at the beginning, taizo is more spicy, and both become more typical iris after some hours, both are interesting!

Howdy!! SOTD: I am layering AT L’ADDM (b/c I needed something very dry in this insane humidity we are having) with No 5 eau Premier. I know it sounds nuts, but L”ADDM give No 5 (even the regular No 5) some warm, dry gravity that I really craved today. And, I also discovered the other day that PdN’s Rose Pivoine layers really well with Joy edp.

Here is my question for anyone that can answer: All you Nahema lovers out there: I have the pre-reform edp. It is gorgeous. Any comments from those of you with the extrait on how it is the same or different? I’ve read that is is rosier and less oriental. Any comments?

Ann, I haven’t compared them in a while, but I will agree the extrait is more richly rosy/floral. There is a plasticky, tropical note in the heart of the edp that gets in the way of the rose for me. Should have been my first Guerlain purchase 15 yrs ago, but I walked the bottle back to Saks less than 20 min after the test spritz on my wrist started to develop out of that wonderful initial first blast of pure roses.
Hopefully you’ll get more responses on this.

Operafan – thanks for the comments on Nahema. I’ve been dancing around getting some extrait for a few years now. Perhaps that will be my perfume quest for the fall! I don’t get plasticky from the edp, but it does get rather “thick” at one point as the heart notes develop. I figure she needs some space at that point before she settles down.

Wearing my Bois 1920 Classic 1920. One of my very few unsniffed purchases. I’ve gone back and forth on this one, but I would say, it really was not a successful purchase. I love a couple of other Bois 1920 scents – but this one just doesn’t suit me (maybe the vetiver? I often can’t wear that), though it certainly suits the weather – light, non-sweet, green and vetivery. Think I’ll have to find something to do with the rest of my bottle. Ah well, there are many other perfumes to wear instead, right?

I have/wear both and I think the EdP is a bit more intense, has more longevity. The Edt has a little more sparkle/ brightness? At least that’s the way it seems to me. Both are a fabulous rendition of lily. I don’t get any indoles though —which is good because I don’t like anything very indolic.

SOTD is Calyx which I thought would be perfect for 90 degree humidity. I thought wrong. For some reason I’m not getting any green, just a straight blast of guava. I smell like a garbage can of three day old fruit peels. Has this ever happened to anyone else? The bottle is fairly new (a few weeks or so), so I don’t think that’s the problem.
Even worse, I’ve been sneezing all day with terrible pressure under my eyebrows. I really hope I haven’t developed an allergy to perfume.

Lucy – Calyx is tricky. I have a small bottle, and I only wear it occasionally. I find it to be a very cranky fragrance. Sometimes it is just glorius fresh green, juicy goodness, and other times a guava nightmare – like someone has trapped me in a drying room for sugary guava strips. I never know how it will act until after I put it on. so I only attempt to wear it once in while. I have read that it turns quickly too, which may be a problem here.

I went old school(ish) today with some CK One lotion and cologne I picked up at TJ Maxx. Haven’t worn it since around 1995. Dropped my kid off at the rec center today and some guy was walking out with his son – and proclaimed loudly to his son, “Something smells utterly delicious! I think it’s that lady in front of us!” 🙂 Guys love that stuff for some reason. I’ve yet to figure it out, since it’s supposed to be unisex. I will say I also got a CK One Summer version that I gave to my 10 year old son, because it made me smell like a dude.

Me too! But I hate to break it to everyone who has not sniffed this since the 1990s: MASSIVE MASSIVE reformulation. I recently tested this in a department store for old time’s sake and it bore absolutely no resemblance….I mean ZERO…to the original thing, which I wore as a teen. I did not recognize it in the slightest, but my nose remembers. Yes, my nose remembers. I think all the “summer” iterations were used as a distraction so they could tamper with the real thing….and over time, no one noticed!

Oh, I wear laughably inappropriate fragrances in the summer heat – objectively I know I should crave light, citrusy things, but I keep turning to my big orientals and musky whoppers. Maybe it’s a masochistic “what doesn’t kill me makes me stronger” impulse that makes me crave Opium, Obsession, or Coco when objectively I know I should be suffocated by them, but I really do think they bloom nicely and turn so much sultrier and earthier on my skin in the heat (when applied sensibly, of course). Up yours, oppressive July humidity, I’ll wear what I want! 🙂

Having said that, I’m a little sick of wearing a room-clearer every time I go out the door lately, so my SOTD is CK Be. So nice. No obnoxious citrus or air-freshener accords, just damp, subdued mossiness that seems tailor-made for humid weather (it’s a sauna out there today). It’s also the fragrance that Got Me Into Fragrance, if you know what I mean, so I like to keep it around to fondly recall when it was the only thing on my shelf and I had no idea what else was out there. (My wallet misses those days.)

I know. I read that, too. I have decants of AC – LOVE THE STUFF! But I get mostly jasmine and ylang from it. No violet!

BTW, I’m always wondering if we need to all occasionally reset our noses by smelling the real things. I may say “jasmine” and someone else may say “violet”. What’s our frame of reference? Do I really know what a violet smells like? If someone tells me a fragrance has violet in it, then I’ll presume that I’m smelling violet. I smelled AC, though, and huh? Violet? Is that what it is? Doesn’t read that way to me at all. Perhaps I need to find some violets and sniff, then perhaps I’ll smell it in the AC. Though, as you say, the website does not list it! I wondered the same thing! Why is everyone saying “violet” and it’s not listed in the notes at all! Tuberose is also one of the notes. To me, it’s a white floral chypre. Amazing stuff…

I got a wonderful blast of violets in the opening when I tried it for the first time. Candied and a bit raspy, gorgeous. Unfortunately that was the only time it smelled that way. I don’t know if I imagined it completely or if it’s possible to develop anosmia after one wearing but whenever I’ve worn AC since it’s just been an ambery, vanillic scent, no violets. Nice enough but not particularly exciting.

I do get the violet – it’s sort of fruity, and in my mind it sort of sliiiiiides along with the rose. Maybe the rose (if you’re getting that) is casting a big shadow?

This is perfect timing for an open thread. I have a question about how to work with French fragrance companies when one’s French is less than stellar. I’ve sent emails both to Caron (curious about Parfum Sacre parfum extrait) as well as Molinard with regard to some iffy site issues when I tried to order a product and haven’t gotten any responses. Is it more a matter of peppering them with email? I’m so frustrated and have no ideas where to go next given the difficulty of tracking down the desired items, which I don’t believe are available here in the States…

Oh, and SOTD is Lea Extreme with a spritz of the Kiehls Musk over top. It is mad hot out there so I told myself I’d try this combo since I’m indoors today avoiding the heat. It’s really a great pairing since it amps up the LE musk so nicely. 🙂

Try calling them. Use skype or something so it doesnt cost you. Im pretty sure every company in the world has english speaking customer service agents, considering most call centers for american companies are outsourced to somewhere overseas.

I second this. French old fashioned companies are very bad with email. Skype them, and speak in english. The person that answers the phone will most likely speak english just fine, and be able to transfer you to someone who can help. Calling is always the most direct way to get information in France. They only just switched off of Minitel to the internet!

For Caron, you might try calling the New York boutique. Even if they don’t have the particular item you’re looking for, they should be able to help you track it down.

    SOTD: Stella

Today is a salty, musky, rose day according to my husband. What I like about Stella is that when I can’t decide what to wear, she’s always there, and never dissapoints.
Also, since my husband only maintains a catalogue of about 10 fragrance names, when I ask him what I should wear, there’s a 1/10 chance it will be Stella ; )

My SOTD is D&G Light Blue, from a sample. I was undecided, but today it’s very light, fresh and a bit musky, which is great as it’s been very hot here, mid 90s. I read that a comparable frag was Lanvin Arpege Eclat, so I will have to try that.
Also looking forward to trying Balenciaga Paris. Anything else I should try if I make it to Nordstrom this summer?

Please explain what you thought about how it smelled. I got to sample it in May at Nordies, but was also sampling some others. Sadly they had no testers to give out. My impression of it is muddled with my impression of Prada Eau d’Ambree which I liked very much. I got kind of a lovely “cold cream” type thing from BP, but am not sure how well I remember it.

I fell for Paris as well…and got sucked into a full price full bottle from my SA at Needless Mark-up…I mean Neiman Marcus… 🙂
However, today, my SOTD(s) are Bois de Iles on the left and No 18 on the right… and I’m thinking the No18 is a very close cousin to Prada’s Infusion d’Iris.
Last night…after several tries…feel in LOVE with PdN’s Odalisque..and have declared it FBW. If the heat (93-95 degrees) keeps up here…I’m thinking tomorrows scent will be The Unicorn Spell by Les Nez.

I have read on other blogs that we should get our hands on Odalisque while we can for it’s under threat of reformulation because of regulations…by the IFRA… or “Idiots Founded on Ruining Aromas” 🙁 I just fear of buying multiples for not being sure how long they will hold up before turning, if they actually turn at all. Why don’t we get “born on” dates for fragrances like you do for beer? Who knows how long a bottle has sat around in inventory somewhere….

Yesterday, I received my Rose Oud by Kilian. I fell in love with it after trying it last week. The rose is almost liqueur-like and has a raspberry edge. The oud is discreet, but you can definitely smell it. Rose Oud lasts an insane long time and has superb sillage. I sprayed a little bit on my Shirt 12 hours ago and it is still strong. In my opinion it is much better than Pure Oud, which didn’t last and had no sillage.

I also fell in love with Habanita de Molinard. It’s really strong and first I thought it is an “eau de parfum intense”, but I found out it is just an “eau de toilette”. Habanita smells like a mix of Shalimar and Back to Black by Kilian.

If you liked the Rose Oud, you should try Aoud Rose Petals… I found the two similar but kept going back to the Montale Aoud Rose for some reason… I have been loving some Oud lately (Czech & Speak Dark Rose and Midnight Oud by Juliette Has a Gun, too) but the heat and humidity lately has me reaching for lighter options.

I have tried Aoud Roses Petals and it’s too sharp for my taste. The oud is medicinal and the rose ist very oldffashioned. In Rose Oud, the rose is stronger and has this great liqueur quality. The oud is more soft and cuddly, but also distinctive. I know, rose + oud is a commo combination, but Calice Becker has done a great job 🙂

You’re right, it lasts F-O-R-E-V-E-R! The first time I heard Kilian is going to do a rose and oud scent, I was really disappointed. You know, rose and oud is the most common combination that you can find when you search for oud fragrances. But Kilian’s Rose Oud is outstanding! I still can’t believe that I blew 300€ for 50ml of fragrance…

I don’t know what it was the first few times of me trying them separate that made me favor the Montale…but today together one on each hand… it’s the Rose Oud that is the winner… and Daisy you are also spot on.. it’s the one that has lasted hours and hours… the Montale is barely a whiff if at all… I guess I should say a big “Thank You!” although…it’s the RO that breaks the bank! 😉

sadly, the Kilian Rose Oud is gorgeous and way too spendy. But at least they have those travel size and refills now that ,while still pretty darn spendy, are at least a bit more attainable.

I’m glad you like Rose Oud! But you’re right, it is VERY spendy. I paid 300€ for 50ml, I still can’t believe it! I always thought my limit is 200€, but if you fell in love with a fragrance, you’re willing to break your own limits.

Have I already mentioned how beautiful the box is, with it’s gold plaque and key? I own several other Kilian fragrances, but non of the other boxes is as gorgeous as the Rose Oud presentation. Even the flacon has a gold plaque and a golden atomizer.

I can see your point. Habanita IS strong and potent. Not everyone can handle such an intense fragrance.

Molinard has two lighter versions of Habanita: Miss Habanita (Grape, Peach, Vanilla) and Un Air d’Habanita (Jasmine, Rose, Vanilla). Maybe you can handle one of these two fragrances better than the original.

SOTD is Balenciaga Paris. I hated it at first (it smelled like rubber gloves) but then fell in love after several wearings. The drydown is especially nice. However, it hasn’t been a great frag for a hot/humid day. It smells metallic and stale today. I found this to be a great scent for spring, however.

I have a huge lot of samples from TPC that I’m currently working through (my favourites so far: Anne Pliska and Apres L’Ondee – wish that last wasn’t so hard to find!) but today I’m testing something decidedly more mainstream – DKNY Be Delicious Fresh Blossom, which I got as a free sample with my last Sephora order. It’s really awful – in fact, I need to go scrub it off because it’s literally bringing tears to my eyes.

Find a little girl to give it to… I gave mine to my 5 yr old who, despite her usually exquisite taste, likes it quite well. The fact that it’s “her own” might help. 😀

I tried a couple of them very briefly and wasn’t blown away. The first one I was drawn to was the iris one but it seemed quite synthetic, I recall lots of laundry musk. The vanilla one smelled of something very green, I couldn’t quite place my finger on it but I’m tempted to say neroli or, perhaps, bergamot. The opening didn’t match the name and I didn’t bother waiting for the base. I might try the other two when I’m passing through Harvey Nics next but I won’t go out of my way to do it.

SOTD is Musc Nomade by Goutal. Lovely, lovely not too clean, not too obtrusive, just absolutely spot on.
Received my sample/discovery set from Tauer perfumes yesterday. Have tried Le Maroc pour Elle and Lonestar Memories. I am smitten. I foresee a lot of purchases from this house in the future. They are strong but mellow, not harsh at all, and totally unlike anything I have smelled so far.

Guilty Pleasure of late: YSL’s Elle. Guilty only in that it is not really on the perfumista’s radar, huh? I dab from a mini I bought online for about $10. Sweeter and girlier than I usually wear, but I was looking to shift myself out of my usual groove of cool classics and greens.

So a question: are you in a perfume groove, and what would jolt you out if it?

I really like YSL’s Elle, it starts out all berries and maybe peony on me and then it’s just CEDAR, which so nice and comforting, esp. when it’s cold out.
I think the best way to get out of a rut is to do exactly what you are doing, try perfumes diff than what you normally would wear and try not to make any preconceptions. I’m really loving D&G Light Blue this week, which I thought was sooo unsophisticated, but I’m really loving it in this summer weather. Another must-have for me is SSS Champagne de Bois, the notes are: aldehydes, jasmine, clove, sandalwood, labdanum absolute, amber and vetiver. I thought, “That doesn’t sound like me at all!” But when I tried it it’s just spicy and musky and exactly what I’ve been looking for!

Today I’m wearing my new perfume: Elizabeth Arden Green Tea Lavender. It’s been a gift of my brother for my birthday.
I think I will enjoy it this summer, as I enjoyed the fruity Green Tea Summer some years ago.
Lavender is quite noticeable but it still has the print of the other Elizabeth Arden Green Tea scents. It’s not so different. I like it.

I love love love the Black Afgano, now that it’s finally here. Even if it’s the wrong weather for it I can’t stop myself from wearing it. So that’s probably what I’ll put on. (And then maybe do a wash load of delicates– I swear, I really do wash my bras. I realize I just made myself sound like a dirty hippie.)

I just tried Black Afgano this weekend. It’s all over my bra now, too. (kidding) I enjoyed it, but my first thought was it reminded me of Patchouli 24. At least in the opening. As it dried down it was woodier, and quite persistent- I kind of love it when showers don’t even kill a fragrance. Get your money’s worth!

Wow, it’s been a crazy couple of weeks – personally and perfume-ly speaking. First, I’ve been so busy with work & a sick cat that I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed. My cat is doing better now, and assuming she doesn’t deteriorate, we have a follow up with the vet on the 31st.

In perfume-land, I’m hosting a couple of splits and getting a bottle of Tauer’s new one LoTV. If you’ve sniffed it, do tell!

But finally, something is going on with my body chemistry lately that is turning everything I wear into barnyard-leather-skank within 30 minutes of application – even fragrances that one doesn’t normally think of as skank…like fresh aquatics! I’m beginning to wonder if it has something to do with the chemicals at my new pool (i recently moved) or something in the CeraVe I’ve been slathering myself with lately? Anyway, as they say in Facebook-land “Dislike!”

I thought Tauer’s new LoTV was pretty amazing. I am not a fan of the flower’s use in fragrance, but this was pretty much spring greenery crushed in the palm of my hand. And there was this oily leather kind of note underneath it all that was very interesting. This scent was one of those true-to-life kind of things, where I really believed I was smelling green things I had just plucked from the earth. Cool.

M – funny you should bring up swimming and chems and skin chemistry. B/c I was thinking of asking you what you did to keep your skin so fragrance friendly, as I have so much trouble with that when I swim. I am really torn as I love swimming and I love my perfumes, but my fragrances NEVER smell right after I swim – even through the next day (unless I get a good sweat in from garden work, etc.). I would imagine that the chlorine in the new pool is your culprit, esp. if you had been using the prior pool for many years – you would have got used to how your skin behaved. I see you are having the same problem I do! Ack. I hope you find resolution.

I’ve noticed that many fragrances don’t do well with heavily chlorinated skin. (so of course I’m drawing a complete blank right now) In fact if my chlorine level gets too high—most everything seems to turn after a few minutes.

Are there any Big C lovers out there who have an alternate suggestion that might be easier for me to purchase? I’d like to buy something this weekend to bring with me on vacation the following week. SOTD: Stephanie De Saint Aignan’s “Un The Au Sahara”. I’m LOVING this sample and foresee a full bottle in my future. The top notes remind me of Weil’s “Antilope” – animalic in a great way- then it transitions into more of a tea scent, while the dry down is a soft, powdery floral. Other hot weather favorites I’ve been enjoying lately are “Paestum Rose”, “Rossy de Palma” (both are a fresh, transparent rose on me, not at all heavy), “Eau de Rochas”, and “Fleurissimo”. I’m looking forward to trying the new Armani. Any opinions on that one yet?

SOTD morning – Roger & Gallet Bois d’Orange – nice light citrus with a bit of woody warmth, just as the name suggests. it is finally warm out.

SOTD afternoon – my new bottle of Eau Premiere arrived! I have been doing fairly well on evilbay lately and got this for about 1/2 price. Bonus: my lust object gave me a hug and told me I smelled good.

Today I bought a very interesting-looking bottle of Bal a Versailles Eau de Cologne. It looks seriously old, and the person selling it said she found it in a closet at an estate sale. Fingers crossed that it is not completely disgusting, but even if it is, I have been getting enough deals to even it out.

Just got back from town where I sampled a few Serge Lutens- Borneo 1834, 5 O’clock Au Gingembre and Fille en Aiguilles on my wrists and arms and Rousse and Chergui on paper strips. Think I like the 5 O’clock best.Perfect for a crisp, sunny winters day! The Borneo was too fleeting, I can’t smell a thing 3 hours after spritzing it! I also like the piney notes of the Fille en Aiguilles.I will reserve judgement on the others as I find the trouble with perfumes on strips is I can always smell the paper/card and it ruins the perfume for me. Ah well…

5:00 and Chergui are about the only Lutens frags I’ve liked enough to consider buying… and even then, I think they’re splits rather than FBs. Sadly, all the interesting weirdness everyone loves about this line fails to show up on my skin at all, and most go too sweet and bland very quickly.

A week ago i walked along the street and suddenly saw several old fragrances in the window of some lingery shop. It turned out that previously the owner had a perfumery there, and now he sells its “leftovers” on really REALLY bargain prices. So i bought prereformulated Paris and Grey Flannel aftershave (that’s not sold in my country for some 15 years!, so i can be sure it’s prereformulated) for something like 13 dollars each. They smell great! 🙂 Just wanted to share..

I hope so too! This is not good perfume-storage weather.

I’m wearing VCA Bois d’Iris today. I love, love, love this scent. It’s been a stressful week for me, I’m thinking I need a scent purchase pick me up. Trying to decide what shall it be. I want something simple, pretty, easy, summery. Nothing that will break the already broken piggy bank. Any suggestions?

If you have a Whole Foods or other natural-ish market near you, try to find the Pacifica line – they have both sprays and solids in some great scents (love the Malibu Lemon Blossom for warm weather). Price is definitely right, too, about $20 for the sprays.

I’m anxiously awaiting BdIris. Hope I love it too. For a cheapish thrill I’ve been enjoying L’Occitane Bergamot Tea lately.

The new Verbena at L’Occitane is nice and Kiehl’s musk isn’t too expensive.

Okey…. So I want to share my happiness with everyone here! I finally received my bottle of Sweet Oriental Dream a week ago. I have been wearing it every day ever since. I love, LOVE, LOOOOOOVE it so much. I bought it unsniffed of course:) But I am a huge loukoum lover, and this beats everythin I ever tried so far! It’s powdery (which I like) but not as powdery as Keiko’s Loukhoum. I am just so happy right now I found my HG:))

    Hi! 😀
Sorry Robin for being so late… but I want to tell you that I have bought a big bottle of “Aire Loco” by Loewe and I love it.! It has been hard to find it in my country. Regards
