Slave labour wages

Posted by Robin on 15 June 2010 6 Comments

Superdrug has ceased selling Katie Price's signature perfumes, as it emerged that Indian workers earning well-below minimum wage were employed to bottle the £19.99 scents.

Ack. I am sure a lot of the products we buy – fragrance or otherwise – are made in sad and substandard conditions. I often think about that, esp. at the holidays: we see this excess of Thanksgiving or Xmas or Easter, etc, products and gifts for our enjoyment to celebrate “good times.” I often wonder about the people who make these things and most likely live in poverty, etc.

Yes…wondering who else they will “catch” — she can’t be the only one.

This is exactly what I thought its unfair to just take her perfumes off I am sure their are others. Now I would like to know which others are doing this as well. They may be opening up a can of worms here.

Yes … imagine buying something expensive only to discover it literally costs a fraction of what they charged you at the store … one would feel both sad and ripped off!

I hope Hermes, L’Artisan, Dior and TDC don’t engage in such practices… I’d hate to have to stop buying their lovely creations.

Well, her perfumes aren’t all that expensive to begin with…nothing like the other brands you mentioned.

It’s an awfully tricky area isn’t it? The factory that was making the perfumes has now lost the contract, which in the short term can’t be good for the workers.

Like AnnS, I often think about these issues. It is extremely difficult to get any info on the ethics and sustainability of perfume production. I guess the companies just don’t want us to know. But there are some promising signs, like this story about Katie Price’s perfumes (Who is she by the way? Ah, no matter.)

Would I be strong enough to change brands, if it came to that? I’m not sure. Could I live without Shalimar? Ouch …
