Jo Malone English Pear & Freesia ~ new fragrance

Posted by Robin on 9 June 2010 33 Comments

Jo Malone English Pear & Freesia

Jo Malone will launch English Pear & Freesia, a new fragrance inspired by the John Keats poem Ode to Autumn, in September.

English Pear & Freesia was developed by perfumer Christine Nagel, who will reportedly be creating many of the Jo Malone fragrances going forward (and who also developed the upcoming Jo Malone Cologne Intense collection). The notes include pear, freesia, patchouli, amber and white musk.

Jo Malone English Pear & Freesia will be available in 30 and 100 ml Cologne Spray and in matching bath, body & home fragrance products. (via wwd)

The JM people at Nordstrom’s act like I am speaking a different language when I ask after the Cologne Intense series. (Where are they selling this?) I admire Christine Nagel but am not a freesia fan. Like it better in a vase…

It hasn’t launched yet, and also will be in limited distribution…I don’t know what stores will be getting it, but not all JM counters will have it.

After asking around at many stores (and getting that same crazy look), I called the Jo Malone flagship store @ South Coast Plaza and was able to reserve a bottle of each of the Cologne Intense fragrances. I really like all of them (but, perhaps, the Iris and White Musk the best)!

Thanks, glad to know at least one place they can be found!

Please explain to me why a 30ml bottle is $55 and a 100ml bottle is $100? The pricing seems a little off. Dont get me wrong, I own a few of the JM scents (blue agave & cacao, nectarine blossom, tuberose) but I think I’m tired of the pricing. Although, their sales persons are the most generous people you will ever meet when it comes to samples. I leave with a full box of 10 different scents every time. Without even asking for them!

Not entirely sure I understand the question…what seems off? (Smaller sizes most always cost more per ml, if that’s what you mean, or are you just saying the line costs too much in general?)

I guess I had a gripe with the smaller sizes costing more per ml. I was just being an annoying consumer and not thinking about actual costs of goods sold. I’m better now 🙂

Gotcha. Well, it’s common. I think L’Artisan used to sell their little 15 ml bottles for something like $35 or $45? Which on the one hand was outrageous, but on the other, hey, I wish they’d bring them back! When you want small amounts of many different scents, sometimes the total cost and not the cost per ml is the more important factor.

Certain costs will be basically static whether you are buying the big or small bottle: bottle manufacture, shipping, advertising, etc.

I always get a 100ml bottle on JM colognes. 30ml bottle sounds far too expensive for me but then I’m generous enough to grab the more expensive 100ml! Mind you, you can always auction the leftovers off ebay, at least you can recoup some of your money! I sometimes do it.

Keats’s “To Autumn” is one of my favorite poems of all time and obviously I’ll now have to figure out a way to sniff this fragrance…. But I’m not sure I really see pear & freesia representing the poem – kind of an odd jump for me. Will save judgment for when I smell it (if I smell it – hopefully I will get to!!)

P, I thought it was an odd combination to represent autumn, and particularly that poem, as well. However, it does sound nice, in that inoffensive Jo Malone way, so I might attempt to snag a sample.

That was my first thought as well: What does pear and freesia have to do with autumn? The patchouli and amber might warm it up a bit, but seem incongruent choices to pair with pear and freesia.

I knew I wouldn’t be the only one. It makes a little sense, since pears are fall fruit (like apples).. but despite that, the combo sounds more like spring than fall. Well, except the amber/patch. Think I’ll stick with the DA&GL instead.

Autumn and John Keats. What’s not to love? I will for sure sniff this one out.

I would be hard pressed to think of 2 notes I’d less like to see in the title, and the white musk doesn’t help. I’ll try it but not very hopeful in this case.

Pear is one of my favorite notes and autumn my favorite time of year. I imagine the freesia will round out the fragrance quite nicely. Does Jo Malone offer a sample program through their site? There isn’t a JM counter anywhere near me. 🙁

I don’t think so, although they do give free samples with online orders. You might try calling a counter in September and seeing if they’ll mail you one, you never know.

Ummm.. could be?? Maybe?? I’m not so sure about pear though, everything i try with pear ends up smelling like laundry detergent… I do like Christine Nagel (loved the scents she did for Mugler, esp. A*Men Coffee!) So.. Maybe!!!

Laundry detergent or shampoo, exactly. I like Nagel’s work too though.

OK, kids. I’m pretty damn sure Keats didn’t know beans about freesia. Why not pears and wine and autumn leaves? Ah, now I feel better…

And just when I was feeling really good about Jo Malone, too (a previously unloved bottle of their Orange Blossom cologne has been getting a big workout from me for the past two weeks).

I’m looking forward to trying this since I love a pear note in anything (though the note is always fleeting).

I thought the JM Vanilla Anise was really nicely done and wouldn’t mind a decant of that; I actually like many in the JM line.

What I should really do is start putting my feelers out for a good price on a bottle of AG Petite Cherie EdP for my pear fix.

To me, it sounds rather lovely, although pear and freesia don’t make me think autumn. And pear doesn’t tend to work very well for me. I’ll try it though!

I’m intrigued by this, although I haven’t been overly impessed by anything Jo Malone for a while. Lots of her scents are quite pleasant, but not ones that inspire FB purchasing. Perhaps the overall effect is autumnal, even if some of the notes aren’t? We’ll have to see…

It will layer beautifully with my jasmine and Honeysuckle, it sounds like. It should give it a sexy drydown. 🙂

One, I know at my local Saks, The Jo Malone line is one of the runaway best sellers there, so hopefully we will get the “Cologne Intense” Collection (which i am DYING To Smell!) But this sounds as lovely as all the rest of the JM Fragrances, which i am a Unabashed Addict for! I LOVE Pear AND Freesia, INCREDIBLY SO, as notes in Fragrances so this has no trepidatious feelings welling inside me whatsoever, in fact am awaiting to inhale it’s glorious scent as soon as it lands at Saks! 🙂

I’m struggling to imagine pear & freesia together, and even more so as an “Autumn” scent. I think it’s one that needs to be sniffed.

I have smelled this and it is very nice but smells nothing like pear or freesia: it is very soft, sweet and nice, but not stunning or terribly original. Having said that, I am still enjoying the smell so much, it is so lovely, but tame. They do have this one in my Neiman Marcus in Dallas and will give out samples.

I just sampled this, hoping for a light-ish, office-appropriate, spring time floral.

It is just dreck, sadly. Sickly sweet, shrill and LOUD for 10 minutes, then exhausts itself and collapses in a pile of totally generic musk. Not for me, obviously! Back to Hiris as the office standby 🙂
