John Varvatos will launch Artisan Black, a new limited edition flanker to last year's John Varvatos Artisan, this April. The new scent is said to be "a longer lasting — more woodsy and musky — version of Artisan".
Artisan Black was developed by perfumer Rodrigo Flores-Roux, who also created the original Artisan. The notes include tangerine, Meyer lemon, blood orange, calypsone (a watery melon note), Murraya flower (orange jessamine), neroli, orange blossom, jasmine, Nigerian ginger, purple ginger, cardamom, coriander, Kephalis, Belambre, Boisiris (woody iris note), Serenolide (white musk), vetiver, patchouli, Mexican cueramo, soft leather and Florentine orris absolute.
John Varvatos Artisan Black will be available in 125 ml Eau de Toilette (via wwd)

Artisan is a really nice fragrance and this “woodsy & musky” version sounds intriguing. I’m always interested in more wood. The original has moderate lasting power on me, maybe a couple of hours at most, so a little more intensity and longevity would be nice. I don’t recall “a watery melon note” in Artisan—hopefully that will be a (very) minor player in this one as well.
also meant to say that the original bottle is pretty cool with the natural rattan weave covering the bottle—-I hope this one isn’t just coated with black paint that flakes off–that would really cheapen what was a very interesting bottle.
I love the original, and will certainly try this one but I liked the light & sparkling aspect to begin with…
Yay finally a fragrance with a orange jessamine note!! These tiny white flowers grows on a shrub indigenous to the area I came from, where it’s commonly planted along fences, and exudes a sweet orange blossom like fragrance, albeit less indolic — totally a perfume in it self!
It’s also in the original, so you might want to try that.
Ive liked almost all the the Varvatos line. The only thing that kept me away from artisan was the lasting power, so im excited about this release.

Both the CEO and I loved Artisan and its another one we share between us. This sounds good as long as the ginger doesn’t beat one over the head. A more intense version of the original’s got to be great. I can’t wait to try it. 🙂
It’s a great unisex, & don’t know why they market it as a masculine.
I think I’m currently visiting stage 5…loved the original, but this doesn’t appeal to me at all (both the bottle and the juice, thanks to the watery melon).
I haven’t tried it yet, but guessing I’ll like the original better too. It’s so summery and sparkling — making it stronger will probably change that.
I liked the original fine until something in it (the underlying musk, I’m guessing — the usual suspect) started bothering me. It verges on that typical “men’s fragrance musk base” that I seem to be able to smell a mile away. Again, it’s nice, but I find myself grabbing much more for the zillion other neroli/orange type things I like better.
To me, “more woodsy and musky” sends up red alert signals just because my mind links it with the wood/musk of Eau de Fraternity Boy.

I know just what you mean. I have a hard time with that typical “men’s fragrance” base that Artisan has and I also got with Fleur de Male, unfortunately. As much as I enjoy a lot of male-skewed scents, I have to let them dry down all the way before I take the plunge.
Not sure about this one – “watery melon” can be a bit of a deal-breaker. “Watery” anything, actually.
I know just what you mean — I call that “man smell”, and sometimes “generic man smell”.
I also loved the original, this will be on my “to try” list. 🙂
