Aura Cacia Relaxing Lavender Aromatherapy Shower Tablets ~ scented body products

Aura Cacia Relaxing Lavender Aromatherapy Shower Tablets

When I get stressed, I remember why I fell in love with home fragrances to begin with — a gorgeous floral candle, a cleansing sea salt bath soak, or a refreshing citrus or woodsy room diffuser can serve to lift my spirits and help me regain perspective when I return to my apartment after a long and dispiriting day. In fact, I barely consider these items extravagant as they cost less, and last far longer than, say, a massage or a visit to an aromatherapist. This is especially true when you come across a neat little product like Aura Cacia’s Aromatherapy shower tablets.

I stumbled across this product in the local organic supermarket the other day. Available in lavender, eucalyptus and peppermint, the idea is simple: to put a little water-soluble tablet on the shower floor which will release its essential oils when hit by the warm water, thereby giving you an aromatherapeutic shower. If, like me, you have tried to accomplish this yourself by dropping neat oils onto the shower floor while showering, you already know that the effect doesn’t last as the oils wash down the drain almost immediately. This tablet solves that problem by dissolving slowly throughout the duration of your shower…

Miomia ~ shopping for perfume in New York

Posted by Guest Shopper on 15 August 2009 — 0 Comments — Comments are closed

Miomia exterior

The Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn is known as an epicenter of street fashion and new indie music. However, its atmosphere of somewhat judgmental coolness can wear thin after a while. Fortunately, the “unisex apothecary” called Miomia is located a few blocks away from the relentlessly hip fashion parade of the downtown area, on a quieter block with its own charms. Miomia is a sunny storefront with white shelving and blond-wood floors, the kind of shop where you’re greeted by a friendly dog. While you peruse the shelves, you’ll notice a steady stream of neighbors and regular customers stopping by to re-stock their favorite products, purchase a gift, or just say hello.

Most of Miomia’s fragrance offerings are displayed on a wall to the right-hand side of the shop’s interior. If you browse the rest of the space, you’ll also see hard-to-find product lines such as Cutler haircare, McBride Beauty, lipsticks by Julie Hewett, and matte nail polishes from KO Cosmetics. Featured skincare brands include cult classics both old (Mario Badescu) and new (Embryolisse, reportedly a treasured secret of makeup artists). There’s also a well-edited group of grooming products geared towards men…

The most expensive jasmine

Posted by Robin on 15 August 2009 24 Comments

"It's the most expensive jasmine in the world," the farmer explains. "It's a sweeter scent, less aggressive and softer than exotic jasmine. It would be a different perfume if the flowers were cultivated elsewhere."

— Columnist Geneviève Roberts of The Independent talks to Joseph Mul, a farmer at Chanel's jasmine fields in Grasse, about the jasmine grown for Chanel No. 5. Read more in The sweet smell of success.

5 Perfumes: The Best of Italy

Posted by Erin on 14 August 2009 64 Comments

Fendi Roma perfume advertThe first and only time I went to Italy I was sixteen, and on a six-week trip of Europe with a large group of girls who had fundraised for the trip through Girl Guides (Scouts). Using the blitzkrieg method of Old World sightseeing favored by many generations of North American young people, we “did” Italy by spending a day-and-a-half in Venice. It was high summer and with the callousness of youth, I wrote Venice off with a few lines in my travel diary: “It’s like a museum covered in pigeon poop. The canals smell of sewage, and there is a haze hanging over the water. No oilies as of yet.” This last bit was because our uniforms apparently made us look like an enormous gaggle of young stewardesses and so we attracted camps of hopeful, slick fellows most places we went. Despite their absence in Venice, I came away with an impression of the place that might have turned me into the sort of traveler who discouraged Kevin. The recent garbage strike in my hometown of Toronto has made me realize you can catch a city on a bad day (or month) — but even in 1993, years before my perfume obsession began, I was hypersensitive to smells, good and bad. As far as I was concerned, Italy stunk.

It was puzzling, though, that my parents kept returning there. “Table wines are cheaper than Coke,” my father explained, when I asked why they kept going back. (Perhaps this brief, thrift-related response helps clarify that my parents are not of Italian descent and therefore returning to visit the mother country; Scotland is the land of our fathers.) Since my parents are not enthusiastic photographers, I tried to determine the attraction of this region listening to stories of their travels…
