Comme des Garcons + Monocle Scent Two: Laurel ~ new fragrance

Posted by Robin on 19 November 2009 34 Comments

cdg-monocle-2

Next month, Comme des Garçons will launch their second fragrance in collaboration with Monocle magazine, Scent Two: Laurel. Scent One: Hinoki, launched in 2008.

Inspired by a trip to the Bekaa Valley, it's a fresh, clean scent that has warm laurel notes. Developed by the same team that launched our Hinoki scent, it will remind regular visitors to Lebanon of the country's hand-made laurel soaps and fragrant gardens in Byblos.

Scent One: Hinoki was developed by perfumer Antoine Maisondieu; I'll update if/when I can verify that Scent Two was as well.

Comme des Garçons + Monocle Scent Two: Laurel is available for pre-order at Monocle's web store, and is £65 for 50 ml Eau de Toilette. (via monocle)

Update: the notes include laurel, pepper, cedar, patchouli, incense and amber, and it was in fact developed by Maisondieu. (via luckyscent)

Another update: see a review of Monocle Scent Two: Laurel.

Sigh. This is not helping my resolve to slow down on sampling…

Betting it won’t get to the US until 2010, if that helps.

“CdG” and “sampling slowdown” are not two concepts that fit wll together.

I always want to smell anything new from CdG!
But I mind finding strong cooking herbs in my perfumes: I use loads of them for cooking, and I do love their smell to linger on my fingers, but I am somehow disturbed to find them in my actual perfumes.
I prefer to eat them 😀

Laurel is great for so many recipes – and beautiful to look at!

That doesn’t bother me…but have never tried laurel soap & now I’d like to.

I finally got around to trying Hinoki. Really quite nice, but I’m trying to figure out how to talk my boyfriend into wearing it. That and Sel de Vetiver, so that I can enjoy more perfumes without having to wear them all at once.

Would sticking them in unmarked decant vials and batting your eyes shamelessly at him do the trick?

I love most everything I’ve tried ffrom CDG, but haven’t even tried Daphne yet, so am imposing the “no sampling” rule with Laurel until I’ve tried Daphne first. I love my attempts at self-restraint, even if they’ll most likely crumble if a sample of Laurel’s available when I pick up one of Daphne. lol

Daphne is very unusual — and very different for CdG.

I like a variety of fragrances and i found Daphne to be a total scrubber on me and i usually hardly eve feel that strongly about a fragrance. Smelled like an awful insect repellent on me 🙁

I don’t know why in my memory Hinoki (which I still haven’t sampled) seemed much more expensive than that. Not sure I’ll rush to try this, but I’m always a fan of CdG.

One of the few (if not the only) laurel I’ve tried — which is a major favorite of mine — is Profumum Victrix: pepper, laurel & coriander.

I too remember it costing more than that. #1 is $145 at Luckyscent, so it is rather pricey. I liked it, but after getting lost in the CdG incense maze, Avignon is still my favorite.

We’ll have to wait to see the US price of this.

Hey Joe, I just got a sample of victrix that I’ve been testing over the past couple of days and I really like it. Kind of reminded me of the Profumum Aqua di sale – to me the drydowns were very similar. Have you tried Sale?

I bought my Hinoki directly from Monocle and it cost £65; coincidentally I’m using it today and I really like it.
I’ll try to pre-order Scent Two.

I had to write to Monocle asking about shipping charges; I bought Hinoki a year ago and they charged me £10 to send to Brazil but now the shipping price is £18.

I spoke to Monocle and this will be available in the US Monocle Store (Los Angeles) and the store in London, the first week of December.

Looking forward to it – I might just buy it unsniffed, I liked Scent One: Hinoki immensely (coincidence: wore a couple spritzes this morning). Scent Two sounds much more accessible, though.

Hinoki has been on my “to buy” list for quite sometime. I just dabbed on a bit from my sample. Nice and woody. 🙂

It’s been on my list too. I don’t want to pay that much for it though…I want to spend about $50 🙂

I think I might like Standard better w/a head cold. Maybe I’ll try dabbing it…or wait awhile and try again…or try it on someone else. I’ve had this experience a lot lately where a frag is *almost* love, but there’s one odd note in there that takes it from love to unwearable. :/

I’ll sample this when I have the chance but I’m not running to it as I’m not a huge fan of laurel leaves.

I guess i do not feel the need to try any of the CDG’s, they all smell rather odd, sometimes somewhat appealing, but never completely stunning. Never a must have for me. So THANK GOD, its one less line i have to worry about sampling 🙂

Just catching up on today’s reading and am so excited to see both this and the post on Standard. I wear Hinoki all the time, so much so that my mom decided she had to have a bottle, too. Interestingly, it is the only scent either of us has been complimented on by men we don’t know. (And not in a creepy way! 🙂 )

That is interesting…esp. since it isn’t conventionally feminine.
