The Monday Mail ~ help Becca find a new perfume

Posted by Robin on 26 January 2009 68 Comments

Cartas

Becca, who comments here regularly as alotofscents, is looking for the perfect romantic floral for her signature scent. She'd like to find a “fresh cut” floral with a touch of white flowers and a slight green note. She doesn't want anything cloying, and she'd like to still be smelling the flowers after a few hours. Here is what we know about Becca:

Becca is single and in her late 40s.

She's a wildlife officer and an animal nerd, and is active in community theater.

She's a tomboy and a girly girl: she's an excellent shot, but loves being soft and pretty.

She's petite, and generally wear jeans and boots with romantic, whimsical, or cute t-shirts…

Clairol Herbal Essences Shampoos and Conditioners: Long Term Relationship and Hello Hydration

Posted by Jessica on 24 January 2009 50 Comments

Clairol Herbal EssencesRemember those television commercials for Clairol Herbal Essences, the ones showing women having highly vocal “Totally Organic Experiences” while washing their hair? Me too. That is, I remember the beginnings of those commercials; I usually changed the channel or left the room before much of their thirty seconds could elapse. Fortunately, Clairol has been promoting its Herbal Essences line in a new direction lately, with more emphasis on the products’ effects and on their fragrances.

The new theme for Herbal Essences is the escape to a “fantasy paradise” of scent. I tried two formulas with different fragrances: Long Term Relationship (red bottle not shown, created to protect longer hair against damage) and Hello Hydration (turquoise bottle as shown, for dry hair). According to Clairol, “Herbal Essences developed each unique scent like a fine fragrance—with top, middle, and base notes.” Can that kind of composition exist in a shampoo or conditioner, the way it would in an oil- or alcohol-based perfume? Somehow, I doubt it (but I’m not a chemist, so who knows). In any case, I tried these two product pairs to see what would happen…

Lazy Friday poll ~ the best for borrowing

Posted by Robin on 23 January 2009 189 Comments

Kenzo Pour HommeMany of us don't worry about gender designations in fragrance — we wear what we like. I think this is especially true for those of us who wear fragrance primarily because we want to smell something good (or interesting, or thought-provoking) as we go through our day, or, as Tania Sanchez so nicely phrased it in Perfumes: The Guide, because it's “a substitute for having an orchestra follow you about playing the theme song of your choice”.

Every so often I have to stop and remind myself that that is not why the vast majority of consumers wear fragrance. Most consumers wear fragrance to smell good to others, or to attract the opposite sex. If that is your aim, many of my own personal favorites (Monocle + Comme des Garçons Scent One: Hinoki comes to mind because I happen to be wearing it right now, and it isn't exactly what I'd choose as a weapon of seduction) might seem perverse, to say the least…
