D.S. & Durga ~ new perfume line

Posted by Robin on 9 January 2009 28 Comments

DS & Durga fragrances

D.S. & Durga is a new Brooklyn-based indie perfume line that debuted last year:

D.S. & Durga began humbly in December of 2007 when they decided to make holiday gifts for their friends. D.S., a musician, & Durga, an architect, first experimented with tinctures of flowers, herbs, & seeds to make aftershaves & toners. When they realized that none of their friends shaved, they decided to begin blending oils, resins, & plant extracts. The results were small batch handmade colognes & perfumes. Their friends loved the results, so they decided to make it official. Within months they were selling to boutiques in New York & California…

Santa Maria Novella ~ shopping for perfume in London

Posted by Guest Shopper on 9 January 2009 — 0 Comments — Comments are closed

Santa Maria Novella boutique in LondonSanta Maria Novella believes in discretion. Tucked away in a (plush) back street that’s off-off the Fulham Road, the sight of me and my notepad has the sales assistants squirming.

“We don’t advertise,” says the chief assistant, slightly scandalised.

A steady stream of customers suggested that they probably don’t have to. The wealthy residents of Kensington know all about Santa Maria Novella. It’s essentially their local Bath & Body Works.

Santa Maria Novella — the mother shop — is the famous Officina Profumo-Farmaceutica in Florence, Italy, one of the world’s oldest pharmacies and the creator of colognes and unguents whose recipes have been handed down for hundreds of years…

Crazylibellule and The Poppies June 26th, Ile d’Yeu ~ new fragrance

Posted by Robin on 9 January 2009 2 Comments

Crazylibellule and The Poppies has introduced a new series, Tous les matins du monde. The first fragrance is June 26th, Ile d'Yeu:

26 June, île d’Yeu: The house at the edge of the Firs. To the background of Bach's English Suites the ocean calls, gently pulled by a thread of light. Nothing disturbs the silence, except the olfactive recklessness of fruit and leaves combined. Surprised, bewildered and moved to be in contact with the skin…

Chanel Egoiste & Platinum Egoiste ~ fragrance review

Chanel Egoiste & Egoiste Platinum colognes for men

Chanel’s Bois Noir fragrance was created (circa 1986-87) because Chanel’s chairman of the board Alain Wertheimer “wanted something new to wear.”* Wertheimer’s marketing approach to Bois Noir was novel: Bois Noir was not sold in department stores (it was only available in Chanel boutiques); there were no promotions (such as “gift-with-purchase” offers; Wertheimer hated those); and he didn’t really care if Bois Noir was a money-maker for his company. Wertheimer spoke frankly in a 1987 interview and said there were few unusual fragrances like Bois Noir because — “People want success too quickly. From a fragrance point of view, people like what their memory tells them is good. Memory tells you it’s good if it relates to something else you like. When a fragrance is completely different, they’re lost.”*

By April of 1990, things had changed — Bois Noir’s name for one. Amidst a flashy (and expensive) print and film ad campaign — the largest ever for a Chanel men’s fragrance — Bois Noir (no doubt with some tweaking of its formula) became Égoïste and was widely launched: in department stores no less! In its advertisements, which included the now-famous Jean-Paul Goude TV commercial, Chanel didn’t use images of men…
