Annick Goutal Mandragore Pourpre ~ new fragrance

Posted by Robin on 10 July 2009 93 Comments

Annick Goutal Mandragore Pourpre perfume

Annick Goutal will launch Mandragore Pourpre in August. The new unisex fragrance is a flanker to 2005's Mandragore, and like Mandragore, was inspired by the mandrake plant and developed by perfumer Isabelle Doyen.

As previously reported, the new variation is stronger and darker than the original and is intended for winter wear; it's also "....spicier, more aromatic, with notes like pepper and anise”. The fragrance notes include bergamot, mint, star anise, amber, rosemary, geranium, black pepper, patchouli, myrtle, incense and heliotrope.

Annick Goutal Mandragore Pourpre will be available in 100 ml, concentration unknown. As with most unisex fragrances from Annick Goutal, the same fragrance will be available in two bottles: the square bottle for men or the gadroon bottle for women. (via wwd)

Huh? Even Goutal has jumped on the flanker bandwagon now? Though I suppose Les Nuits de Hadrien and Gardenia Passion could also be called flankers.

I do think this one must be to some extent due to customer demand….many people loved the original Mandragore but found it too light.

You took the words right out of my mouth, Robin. It sounded so incredible on paper, but on my skin it turned to Orange Fanta in 5 minutes. A darker, stronger concentration would be welcomed!! I still think it is a fascinating scent in theory, so am pleased they’ve developed it’s potential.

They did an EdP but I didn’t love it and it was hard to find anyway…hope this is a much spicier & darker scent as described.

I kind of always forget there was/is a Mandragore edp — is that still in actual production?

I also should add that I like the idea of a flanker that doesn’t sound like a flanker; I prefer “Pourpre” to “Mandragore Noire” or something similarly played out.

There is an EdP listed on Beauty Encounter for it.

Well, but it does, J. They just went w/Mandragore Purple instead of Mandragore Black. 😀

Yikes. Can someone pass me my meds? I think I was reading this post all morning long thinking that the name of the scent was just plain ol’ “Pourpre”… not “Mandragore Pourpre.” Very weird how my brain and eyes just omitted that bit. Boy, do I feel dumb.

Also, I wonder if the bottle color is exactly the same as the original Mandragore or slightly different. Also, I didn’t know the shape of the women’s was called a “gadroon”… you learn something new in this perfume world every day, don’t you?

          • boojum says:
            10 July 2009 at 5:27 pm

Could be just the picture, but I’d say the original purple was a bit more reddish.

Well darn it! How am I supposed to control my perfume spending with Amouages popping up and now this! I adore Mandragore so I’m certainly going to have to try this!!! Spicier…more aromatic? sheeesh… there goes the perfume budget all to heck (again).

I was going to say I would have been in on a split (depending on what it was like) but smokeytoes bet me to it! Unless you can do a 3 way split? Is it like a faux pas to muscle in on someones split? If so, just ignore me LOL.

I think it’s always best to let your split desires be known. If there’s no room for you in the original one, at least you might prompt enough others to step up and do another one. 🙂 And maybe you’re the one last spot they need to fill.

          • Daisy says:
            11 July 2009 at 10:16 am

Definitley good to mention the desire to split….Boo is exactly right! Always listen to Boo! I think we’re all looking for samples first…since most of us have that unsniffed-purchase-disaster back in the perfume cabinet somewhere lurking…

I sure did covet that original men’s bottle, and I really liked the original fragrance, but it was too wimpy on me, too (and I *like* ’em subtle). This new one sounds exciting. Maybe those who did spring for the earlier, more gorgeous bottle can put the old juice in a decant bottle and dump the new stuff into it! I would do that. 🙂

          hey everyone,
I don’t know if this is kosher but this is Tom from Bergdorf Goodman with Annick Goutal. It is definitely possible to decant from one bottle to the other as each bottle in the AG collection unscrews. [Ed: 2 sentences removed]. I, too, look forward to the new Mandragore. I love the original and one of my favorite combos is layering Nuits des Hadrien on top of Mandragore-just right for my chemistry.

Seriously, it comes with a funnel? Dangit, that might have pushed me over the top – I might have to finally push the buy button on my shopping cart at fragrancenet. I do have some lovely things in it though.

            Hi Tom

            12 July 2009 at 7:17 pm

C – can’t comment about all, but the mini I bought (off the bay) was in the nice men’s bottle, packaged in a drawstring bag w/a funnel for refilling purposes. Loved it!

I have 2 AG’s in the 100ml ladies bottles….no funnels came in the boxes but the tops do screw off….very convenient for decanting or making samples! Pipettes are cheap though.

Well, it is not listed in the notes of Mandragore anyway. The incense note added to this new version makes it even more appealing to me.

Hmmm, I wonder how the original Mandragore and Encens Flamboyant smells layered?

I’m scared to read anymore – I think that today’s posts alone have added 10 things to my “must try” list. And that’s on top of the orders from Yves Rocher, Beauty.com, and TPC that are on their merry little ways and the bottle of Badgley Mischka that I just snagged at TJ Maxx today. This is shaping up to me a more expensive quarter than even the 2nd quarter was.

Oh, and the bottle of CKOne Summer that I snagged from Marshall’s last week. Sigh.. . obsession is a scary thing.

Decided to wear the original today…it really is wonderful. Hope this new one will be as good!

Wow, sounds exotic, to me Mandragore (especially the men’s version) is already quite dark … Really sounds like something for the deepest winter days, to be smelled preferably on a lover’s skin, warming up from being outside in the cold

Just an FYI, the men’s & the women’s Mandragore are the same juice in different bottles…AG does that with a number of their scents. But this does sound like a wonderful winter scent!
