Diesel Only the Brave ~ fragrance review

Posted by Kevin on 29 April 2009 123 Comments

Diesel Only The Brave, fragrance bottleDiesel Only the Brave advert

After my Yves Saint Laurent L'Homme review posted last week, many men wrote me at my Now Smell This email address "confessing" their love for L'Homme; these men were unwilling to "admit" their admiration for L'Homme in my review's comments section because I called the fragrance "standard-issue men's perfume." I think women are more willing to proclaim: "Call this perfume crap if you like...but I LOVE it!" All you sensitive perfumistos out there: I have a confession to make — I, too, like my fair share of "standard-issue" men's fragrances.

Perfume addicts are inclined to enjoy categories of scents: ambers, vanilla fragrances, rose perfumes, mossy aldehydes.... Me? I like citrus perfumes, leather scents, smoky/incense fragrances, and vetiver and tea colognes of all types. If I come across a fragrance full of lemon, orange, petitgrain, a hint of vetiver and wood — chances are good I'll enjoy it, even if there are 100 other fragrances that smell pretty much the same. Today's scent, Diesel Only the Brave, is not innovative or "strange", not by a long shot (it reminds me of Zirh Ikon for one), but I'm partial to its components, and I like it.

Only the Brave contains lemon, leather, cedar and amber. The fragrance opens with an ozone-lemon accord which is followed by a talc-y (super-light) leather note. As the ozone-lemon-leather notes recede, sweet incense and cedar notes emerge. During Only the Brave's dry-down, lemon returns to the fore — this time not "juicy," but "candied" lemon — and there's a moment or two when I swear I detect a hint of clove-cinnamon. An hour into wearing Only the Brave, the notes become a bit gauzy, and I'm left with a fresh, cedar-amber-musk accord. If  the perfumers (Aliénor Massenet, Olivier Polge, Pierre Wargnye) had held back on the 'fresh' (ozone) notes I would have liked Only the Brave even more. The fragrance (sheer and suitable for summer wear) has great lasting power and sillage, and even after a shower I was left with a wonderful vanilla-cedar aroma on my skin (smelling a bit like benzoin-cedar incense cones).

Only the Brave is named after Diesel founder Renzo Rosso's Only the Brave charitable foundation, and the bottle is modeled on Rosso's fist — I'll leave it to others with more time and energy than myself to figure out that connection/symbolism (if there is any).  Diesel Only the Brave is available in 30, 50 and 75 ml Eau de Toilette.

I'm wondering if all the guys who wrote me privately last week regarding Yves Saint Laurent L'Homme will publicly comment today: "Kevin, I can't BELIEVE you like this fragrance! It's so...."  Here's a challenge for Only the Brave commenters out there: reveal your love for one perfume that most fragrance folks consider dull (at best) or vile (at worst).

D & K: I definitely still love Kouros, but I can only very rarely bring myself to wear it. I just love sniffing a vial for the thrill of it and occasionally, alone at home, on a chilly night, I will spritz a bit on myself.

Those who call it vile — or “unwearable,” as Chandler Burr does — have my sympathy

Ha, I’m wearing Kouros RIGHT NOW! It’s one of those that I wear when I’m up to no good 😉
Oddly, I never understood why people thought it smelled so vile, but I usually don’t spray a lot…until today when I loaded up and suddenly thought…oh my god…that’s what everyone is talking about. I still can’t stop smelling myself, though, and enjoying the delightful naughtiness of it.

Jared: one spray too many and all hell breaks loose with Kouros. So if your friends smell Kouros on you they think: “Oh no, he’s going to do something baaaaaad!” ? If you haven’t already: try Guerlain Jicky or Mouchoir de Monsieur…if you like Kouros you may enjoy them too.

Ahem, I did admit to loving L’Homme in the comments’ section, didn’t I? *cough cough* Wait, does that make me a woman? 🙂
Only the Brave sounds really nice and worth testing. Thanks for the review, K.

I’m new to perfume (and love this site, it’s been a big part of my education). I haven’t smelled Only the Brave, but that bottle cracks me up! It’s like those old Avon collectibles, except violent.

As far as embarrassing perfume fondness — how do serious fragrance people feel about L’air du Temps?

boysugar: I know that one well…an office mate wore it for years…and the word “moderation” was not in her vocabulary. If there ever was a perfume that didn’t need refreshing that was it, but she’d re-spray at least three times a day. After she left the job…the office smelled like her for six months till the carpet was shampooed!

[Taking a deep breath for courage] Pleasures. After the first hour it is quite ho-hum, but before then it makes me happy, which come to think of it is rather the whole point of perfume. Even so, I probably wouldn’t wear it if were on every second woman — or maybe it is but I can’t tell…

Butting in to say that Pleasures is a great scent…I think it’s seriously underrated. It also isn’t “interesting” or “weird”, but it’s just very well done. It’s like Michael by Michael Kors in that it’s frequently the answer I get when somebody else smells good and I ask what they’re wearing.

I didn’t think your comment was dumb at all, FWIW. I kind of like the bottle, especially since they went to the trouble to make it asymmetrical. I like that it apparently stand either on it’s side, or on the bottom? Am I looking at it properly? It also reminds me a bit of Yellow Submarine (the film).

Chanel Chance Eau Fraiche. Yes, I know, it’s green; yes, I know, it’s got skinny teenage girls leaping about on the ads; yes, I know, it’s sometimes a little sharp- I love it. It’s part sentimental and part smell, and even now it’s the only floral I wear with regularity AND get loads of compliments on every time. I pulled it out a few weeks ago for spring and sprayed away- it always makes me smile.

I was just looking at the ad and pondering why this ad campaign has been so appealing to me. I think it’s the lack of directly using sex to sell the fragrance, and also because I really enjoy Common and some of the other artists who appeared in the commercials.

Or maybe it’s because Common looks like a man confident in his own smell in that picture. Who knows. The scent doesn’t sound half bad though.

I admit to loving “Silver Mountain Water” by Creed – even though I’ve heard nothing but bad things from “those that know perfume”. It starts with a bracing metal note that I find both unusual and really sensual in a way. Then a non-descript bouquet of flowers, that reminds me of what those glass + metal flower arrangements could smell like (you sometimes see at old hotels or in antique stores). So even though it gets no love I think it’s great!

Another SMW fan here…at least, I think so. I’ve only smelled it twice, once from a sample, and once a bottle off the bay. The sample was nice; the bottle, definitely not. I’m assuming it was a (very poorly done) fake, and what I liked was the real thing. Still, I can no longer verifiably say I like it. :O

I’d be curious to try this Diesel, Kevin. Nice review, and I love a good lemon accord. However, I’m still hankering after some of that deliciously lemony Chanel Allure Homme Édition Blanche — it’s a pity that they never put out a bottle smaller than 100ml (I believe).

I totally want that goofy bottle. I hadn’t associated it with violence as much as a “yes!!” salute, which would more indicate bravery than punching someone. I dunno, but I dig it.

My embarrassing perfume is Organza. Just the regular ole’ one, not the fancy limited one. ! also have a giant bottle of Ange ou Demon, which is a Turin one-star, and I don’t think it is that bad, just not especially exciting. I have also been known to enjoy a day of Flowerbomb now and again.

I agree with cjordan, strangely enough aqua di gio does seem to attract the compliments (had a bottle once years ago). But my brother in law purchased a pocket size 30ml from the local pharmacy that he has been wearing to death at our work and for some reason it smells a bit ‘eggy’ to me. Could be just my immature nose, but I get that same ‘eggy’ feeling from estee lauder beyond paradise as well (he also wears that from time to time. Or maybe it’s just him? LOL )
But my embarrasing confession is once owning and actually LIKING a Paris Hilton fragrance (for men). How embarrasing.

I do not envy your position as a perfume reviewer, Kevin. It is a hard endeavor trying to review a perfume from a technical, unbiased point of view when we all have our own scent style preferences. How else can we say we like or dislike something?

I still have yet to sniff Only The Brave. But it seems that the Macy’s I was at believes in keeping much of the testers unaccesible so that you’re forced to talk to an SA rolling out her spiel and corner you into buying a scent.

I’ll admit that I do like L’Homme, but sadly my nose sniffed this waxy component on its way to the drydown that turned it into a ‘meh’ type of scent for me.

I HATE THE BOTTLE OF OTB!, like many have voiced on the BN site. Quite possible that Diesel has become the Hip Hop nightclubbers dress of choice and changing their marketing focus. Fuel For Life and OTB’s marketing campaigns are like night and day.

I gotta tell you a heartbreaking story…this is devastating. It gives new meaning to the term “standard-issue.” I am psychologically scarred after one day purchasing a bottle of Mr. Clean Lavender-Vanilla Scent and then making a sensory connection with my bottle of Dsquared He. Of course the Mr. Clean didn’t have woody notes and it was less green, but I swear that the same synthetic essences were used, no doubt about it!

In order to cope, I’m telling myself “WOW, my floors smell of Dsquared He.” But I can’t help feel that when I wear D2H, I smell like floor cleaner. I didn’t think this day would happen–I thought I had a more discerning taste in perfumes, only to realize that there’s no difference between the smells in perfumes and in floor cleaners. I am seriously killing myself over this!

I think D2H should be named “Only The Brave” because you’ll end up smelling like floor cleaner. (It HURTS…man, it hurts!)

Confession No. 1: I kind of love that bottle! I like how it can be positioned at various angles, taking on a different connotation at each position (black power salute, fist banging on a desk, etc.).

Confession No. 2: My really embarrassing fragrance obsession isn’t even a perfume at all… it’s Caress Cream Oil body wash in “Moroccan” scent. I’m sure Andy Tauer would choke on his fondue if he ever smelled it, but I love the stuff!

YOU’RE NOT ALONE, LILYDALE! I love Caress Moroccan too! Gosh I really wish they could bottle it because I wouldn’t mind spraying some on!

I’m trying to figure out what’s in so that I could replicate it in some way. I’m smelling something like carnation, a white floral, cinnamon and/or anise or whatever that spice is on the label, vanilla, and maybe some clean musk.

Andy Tauer is a very nice and gentle man. He’d probably appreciate Moroccan’s character, seriously!

I figured it was my secret shame, but I’m so glad to have company! I agree on the cinnamon/vanilla/floral, but there’s definitely more going on as well, and I would totally spritz myself with it if I could. And yes, Andy Tauer is the sweetest man ever, but the Caress definitely has a bit more sugar than his L’Air!

Ah, yes. Guerlain’s Mahora. Sure, it’s a Guerlain, but it’s available for $21 at the discounters and it is universally reviled. (And yet, they re-issued it, at top dollar, as Mayotte, so someone must be buying it.) I believe Luca Turin described it as…yes, here it is…”LVMH’s second lapse of judgment after buying Guerlain. To call this a frangipani is an insult to the entire Plumeria genus. Smells like a $200 plug-in air freshener.” And this isn’t one of those reviews where everyone else thinks he’s crazy. He’s pretty much summing up the general viewpoint.

But it smells like creamy, salty white flowers to me. In fact, at one point in it’s development it smells like hot buttered popcorn, if you were eating hot buttered popcorn while standing in a field of tuberoses. I don’t wear it a lot. But I haven’t thrown it away either.

Oh, darling, not MOVIE popcorn. That smells like old feet.

The popcorn I make here, in my own house, on the stove. The freshest, breadiest, saltiest carb imaginable. An entirely different animal!

And if you don’t buy that you could at least give me a two-for-one since I managed to confess to second scent that you hate in describing the first one. 🙂

oh, not popcorn….I used to love the stuff….then I was “popcorn mom” at my daughter’s elementary school for 4 years….every week 600 boxes….it makes me ill now. One less carb-rich food I need to worry about…

I never ate much popcorn until I bought myself a Whirly-Pop on a whim. Best popcorn EVER! I add a little dab of coconut oil to the oil/butter and it is to die for. Everywhere i take a vat it gets completely devoured. I also use a multi-colored organic popcorn that is divine. Microwave popcorn has destroyed popcorn. Too much grease and stench, plus one place I worked, our microwaves kept catching on fire.

Totally agree, Tama. Microwave popcorn=BAD. I make mine the old-fashioned way, in a pot, with oil, on the stove. It was my Dad’s late night snack when I was little. I used to hear the kernels hitting the metal lid of the pot and smell the fresh corn smell as I was falling asleep. Which probably explains a lot.

I love Gucci pour Homme II…even though my wife hates the stuff on me. There is something about the top notes that just drives me absolutely crazy…and if the entire fragrance had this then it would be absolutely perfect…not sure if it the violet leaf that I enjoy so much.

I’m about to date myself, but the bottle makes me feel…is it nostalgic? I can’t help but think of being a small child watching my young-and-confident aunt and uncle – wearing dashikis! – leave the house for a night out. A night that I knew, being a ridiculous starry-eyed kid, had to be full of excitement and adventure straight out of some blaxploitation flick. Power to the people!

I love Jean Paul Gaultier Le Male myself… even though the stuff is so darn popular. Many a cologne aficionado feels that it’s dull and overplayed, but I wear it often, and smell pretty darn good in the “man in a can”.

As for Only the Brave, it reminded me of Prada for women (the original 2004 one) mixed with a dash of Angel. Given the popularity of Angel around here… it’s not for me, and “only the brave” could pull it off. (Though I do wear A*Men.)

I sampled this fragrance today and loved it! Most cedars end up smelling like a dirty litter box on my skin, but this one is quite nice. It also smells nice layered over the Aquolina Pink Sugar I’m wearing today. Pink Sugar is my guilty pleasure… I’m 22, so I figure I can get away with smelling like burnt candy for another few years at least 🙂

Hi, Kevin. I must admit a certain affection for Kenzo Homme and L’Eau d’Issey Homme — paradigmatic examples of the dreaded 90’s aquatics. Perhaps my lingering affection has to do with how evocative they are of a certain period in my life (not even a particularly pleasant period). Somehow they evoke memory so effectively, that I occasionally yearn to smell them, just for that effect. (I had bottles of both, but got rid of them years ago…. so far I have managed to resist the urge to replace them).

This citrus+ cedar loaded perfume really appelas to me: I love both notes. (It it reminiscent of cedarwood tea by CB-IHP?)

For what concerns my guilty pleasure: Intense Tiaré, by Montale. Very sweet, obvious and reminiscente of suntan oil, but it makes me feel so happy. When I wear it I always fearsomeone will comment: anyone’s wearing coppertone? But as soon as I’ll drain my sample I’m going FB nevertheless!!

pimpinett, I reckon angel is like the Madonna of the perfume world – groundbreaking at the time, now some people hate it, others still love it but most appreciate what it’s achieved. Well it hasn’t tried adopting any Malawian babies or anything but you hopefully get my comparison!

It’s a good comparison, definitely. No adoption scandals, true, but I think the current version is slightly blander and less interesting than the one I remember from the 90’s, so there’s a similiarity there as well. 🙂

My guilty pleasure is Tea Rose by Perfumer’s Workshop … which I spray on with abandon until I smell like a Pungent Pillar O’Petals. But I only do this when I am the only one at home, and the dogs are asleep.

I’ve loved the widely reviled Aromatics Elixir by Clinique since I was 13! Still love it! Still wear it!

I also admit to being persuaded by Turin’s praise of Tommy Girl. Persuaded enough to buy it and wear it.

I also enjoy Revlon Skinlights scent. I get the impression most people don’t even know about this scent, or write it off since it’s a drugstore fragrance. It’s a nice light green tea scent with a zesty ginger topnote and lavender in the background.

Taking a real deep breath for courage here…. I love White Shoulders. Just the EDP, not the cologne or edt. It turns to a spicy carnation scent on me. Just about everyone I know hates it, though. So, I always get a perverse little kick whenever they say, “mmm. you smell great, what are you wearing?” and I get to reply “White Shoulders”

I also really, really love Clinique “Wrappings”.

My guilty pleasure is Lancome Hypnose, which seems to be widely dismissed by the perfumista crowd. I love it, even though I know it’s not a particularly “interesting” fragrance.

In the fall and winter, I’ll often layer Hypnose over Olivier Durbano Black Tourmaline. I can’t wear OD BT solo because it just makes me smell like a bonfire, but I love using it as a base for much sweeter perfumes that need a little grounding. (It also works well with “L” by Lolita Lempicka.)

Been reading for a while. This is my first post here.

Anyway, my nominee is Sean John Unforgivable. I’m both the one who loved it, and also the one who considers it completely vile.

I loved it when it first arrived. Enough to the point where i picked it up, and really enjoyed it for a while. But then I made a fatal mistake. I wore it the semester I took Ceramics. Something in the fragrance is a little too close to the “moldy dirt” smell of old clay slip, and it is now and forever ruined for me. The scent makes me feel physically ill. My most recent ex wore it, or something exactly like it, and it totally grossed me out those days.

Also, occasional guilty pleasure: Abercrombie Fierce. lol (tragic, i know)
