Kiehl's Essence Oils ~ new fragrances

Posted by Robin on 4 February 2009 19 Comments

Kiehl's has launched a collection of their classic essence oils in rollerball format:

A collection of rich essences from the 122 unique fragrant oils formulated in the original "Kiehl Pharmacy," packaged into an elegant amber glass cylinder with a roller ball applicator. A concentrated fragrant experience is beautifully combined with ease of portabilty. In honor of our long essence history, each essence oil displays the date of their first known introduction, each recalling a unique period in Kiehl's history.

The collection includes Vanilla 1968, Musk 1921, Coriander 1946 and Grapefruit 1976; each is sold in 7 ml for $25. (via kiehls)

Other recent launches from Kiehls: Forest Rain.

I think they may have raised prices a little bit. I just purchased a couple of oils and they were 18 not 25….. hmmm
I have the Musk and it has a touch of soft floral in the drydown. It's a lighter musk than BT's Egyptian Musk.

Seems like they chose the most boring ones they could think of. They have had some amazing scents – vetiver, black narcissus, exquisite rain. Coriander might be worth a sniff.

Looks like the regular (NOT rollerball) bottles are $16 for 1/8 oz or $27.50 for 1/4 oz.

This is exciting! I think their musk is exceptional, though I haven't tried the others I recall someone saying many good things about the coriander and wasn't able to find it in the shop in Vancouver. I will have to drop by the Kiehl shop on Robson Strasse to check if it has arrived yet.
I imagine the numbers represent the original year of launch?

I might have to try the musk, based on the comments here. I'm really enjoying my Peace Comes from Within by Creative Scentualization (or whatever it's called now) with its notes of bergamot, musk and oceanic, but it's way out of my price range!

I used to love the French Rose and Exquisite Rain lotions! I bought their Pour Homme lotion for my husband back when we were dating. That scent really lasted on him and people took notice.

I own the Coriander and while it grabbed me enough to buy it when I was vacationing in Puerto Rico I rarely wear it.
It has a nutty, almost edible quality to it, that seems a little too strange for me to wear comfortably. Maybe I should layer it??
I agree with the comments above: Kiehl's needs to release some of the other more exciting oils.

I am guessing these are their best sellers though!

The musk is “too much” for me, but I know it has a gajillion fans. The coriander lotion is nice but too pale for me — wish it had a stronger coriander scent. And yes — launch year.

Now called Sarah Horowitz, and I think she just released some cheaper purse sprays, if that helps!

I snapped up French Rose and Rain essences when I heard they were being d/c. SO glad!

And I never tried any of those 3! I did like one they called Heather, or Wild Heather? But think they discontinued it.

I'm guessing they didn't sell all that well? Because they really cut back on the selection a couple years ago.

My first thought was “that's dang pricey!” — approaching or over $3.50/ml, either with or without rollerball. But they're oils — can anyone comment on whether the concentration is really strong? If so, this might qualify as a cheap thrill; some of them sound good, and I'm forever curious about the musk.

Hmmm…the original musk oil was darned strong, but don't know if it still is — they must have reformulated it by now. The others I tried weren't unusually strong.

I thought the original Musk oil was strong, but very long-lasting. Both hubby and I wear it, low sillage and the staying power is very good.

The musk and coriander have been favorites of mine for about 15 years now! I also love the cucumber – I'm surprised it wasn't part of this release as it's very popular. I think the oils are pretty strong. A dab is definitely enough, especially in the case of the musk – I can only tolerate it in tiny doses. But in tiny doses, I adore it! It blends well with other fragrances, too.

Well, I don't know about any others, but I was always under the impression that Rain was pretty popular. There was serious grieving. Maybe it has something “bad” in it, or something that got too expensive.

Maybe they're just seeing how they'll do & then they'll add more scents…rollerballs do seem to have become very popular.
