The Monday Mail ~ help Natalie find a new perfume

Posted by Robin on 8 September 2008 104 Comments

PostboxThis week's Monday Mail is about Natalie, who was “a budding perfumista” in her teens (Hermès Calèche, Jean Patou Cocktail). As an adult, Natalie finds that she has drifted to “pretty-pretty, crowd-pleasing florals” (Christian Dior Diorissimo, L'Artisan La Chasse aux Papillons Extrême, Jo Malone Orange Blossom) that aren't a good match with her pesonality. She has started out exploring new fragrances but would like our help deciding what she should sample next. She doesn't mind splurging within reasonable limits (no JAR or Clive Christian), but she'd also be happy with a budget fragrance.

Here is what we know about Natalie:

She's a single mother in her late 30s.

She's happiest in either huge cities or “the back of beyond”.

She's describes herself as moody, daring, complicated, or less charitably, difficult. She's also “eccentric, creative, and introverted, and my professions have included everything from glassblowing to managing professional boxers”…

Viktor & Rolf Flowerbomb Hair Mist ~ hair perfumes, part 1

Viktor & Rolf Flowerbomb Hair Mist

Members of perfume chat boards occasionally debate the pros and cons of wearing perfume in their hair. Some fragrance lovers feel it’s a discreet and long-lasting way to enjoy perfume; others worry that the alcohol in the perfume will dry out their hair or damage their hair-color. I’ve always thrown caution to the winds, figuring that a spritz of Eau de Toilette is less damaging than many environmental factors (or most mainstream hair products, for that matter), but I’m also willing to try some of the new perfumes created specifically for hair.

Viktor & Rolf’s new Flowerbomb Bomblicious Perfumed Hair Mist joins the Flowerbomb line-up of Eau de Parfum, “extreme” Eau de Parfum, Eau de Toilette, body cream, body lotion, and shower gel. Its bottle is a slightly smaller version of Flowerbomb’s “grenade,” complete with sealing-wax “pin,” cast in frosted glass…

Random snippets ~ perfume in the news

You must be both stubborn and open-minded when you arrive at the shop. An air of feckless uncertainty will only invite aggression or condescension. The default setting for any sales assistant is to sell the latest thing. If you want to bypass the most recent releases and get into things that came out prior to last Tuesday, come up with a challenge for them: ask for the best one.

— Luca Turin & Tania Sanchez on how to shop for perfume, in the UK Times Online.

As long as you're in Paris, visit a few exclusive perfume boutiques with a self-described "passionate perfumista." Neela Vermeire's Perfume Paths walking tours visit boutiques such as Guerlain and Hermes; she'll help you pick out a fragrance based on your preferences and personality. "You can't choose a perfume unless you're in the right environment. It's like choosing lingerie," she says.

— From Follow Your Nose to France, a brief article in the Washington Post.

These days the most popular perfume for women is Code, by Armani. Also Juicy Couture, that is a big one. The most expensive ones now are Dolce & Gabbana, and the price has gone up and up and up. Many customers don’t understand why. We have to explain that we aren’t raising the price because we want to, but because we have to.

John Lewis ~ shopping for perfume in London

Posted by Guest Shopper on 7 September 2008 — 0 Comments — Comments are closed

John Lewis in LondonThere are four big department stores on Oxford Street, all between Oxford Circus and Marble Arch. Of these, Selfridges is by far the biggest and best, but John Lewis — closest to Oxford Circus of the four — has a treat or two for perfumistas.

Along with all the standard department store fragrances, John Lewis has a little cache of niche surprises — at present Acqua di Parma, Annick Goutal, Banana Republic, Creed, Il Profumo, Juliette has a Gun, Maître Parfumeur et Gantier, Rance and The Different Company…
