The German company Mäurer & Wirtz launched the Tabac Original fragrance in soap form in 1938. In 1955, Tabac Original, developed by perfumer Arturo Jordi-Pey, made its debut as a cologne. For years, every time I went to Europe, I would see faded advertisements for Tabac Original at tobacconists or pharmacies, and often, the white bottles of cologne would be “baking” in sunshine in the shops’ front windows. I assumed Tabac Original was “the European Old Spice” and went about my business – I didn’t need to sniff it. (My opinions of “cheap” — inexpensive — scents and Old Spice have since changed.) Tabac Original has dull packaging and is treated sloppily by shopkeepers, but the fragrance deserves some respect…
Prada has launched three more fragrances in their Exclusive series, which can be found at Prada boutiques and selected department stores. Reportedly the recent releases, No. 8 Opoponax, No. 9 Benjoin and No. 10 Myrrhe, will be the last in the series.

There are thousands of perfumes on the market. They're as manifold and distinct as wines but far more important to get right. Which, after all, is more likely to spoil your meal: a bad cabernet in your own glass, or a bad perfume or cologne on anyone in the room? Besides, the mystery of wine is mitigated by an enormous wing of writing: histories, guidebooks, magazines, Web sites. Not so with scent; there's almost nothing to steer the novice. At least, there hasn't been until now.
