I’m sure many of you have had this experience: you read about a new fragrance. It sounds perfect. You start to build a smell-picture in your mind. You wait, and then you wait some more. It finally launches, but is only sold someplace inconvenient (there are few phrases in perfumespeak more dispiriting to me than “exclusive to Saks”). Finally, you get your hands on it. You spray, and — oh! It is not at all what you expected.
Un Jardin après la Mousson is the latest from Hermès and the third fragrance in their Jardin series, and it isn’t the first of perfumer Jean-Claude Ellena’s creations to surprise me in this way, although more often than not, I manage to adjust. I liked Osmanthe Yunnan as soon as I smelled it, but it somehow wasn’t what I thought it would be, and I could not help but feel a sliver of disappointment…

Demeter has launched another in their series of candy-inspired collections: the Tootsie Collection. There are three fragrances named for popular sweets from Tootsie Roll Industries, established in 1896 and named for owner Leo Hirshfield's 5 year old daughter. The scents: Tootsie Roll, Tropical Dots and Junior Mints.
Tootsie Roll is “A luscious and delectable combination of fudge, caramel, chocolate and vanilla that brings back childhood memories of simple and easy pleasures”…

A few years ago the jeweler Joel Arthur Rosenfeld, who creates truly fantastical arrangements of gems, released a line of luxury fragrances bearing his initials. These seven scents, all pure perfumes, can be examined and purchased at JAR’s only boutique outside Paris: an alcove just off the main fragrance area of Bergdorf Goodman’s beauty department.
The JAR boutique’s walls are painted a deep plum shade, with an emblematic bolt of lightning streaking across the ceiling. The space is dimly lit with small, shaded lamps, and once you have entered its sanctuary, you sit facing a specially trained JAR fragrance representative across a table. The shadowy light, the hushed ambiance, and the glimmering objects on the table may make you feel as though you are about to have your fortune told, or to participate in some secret religious ritual…
