Red Flower Ocean Purifying Body Wash and Moisturizing Lotion

Posted by Jessica on 17 August 2008 4 Comments

Red Flower Ocean body products

All the scents in Red Flower’s revamped (or “recrafted”) Flower Skin line are named for specific flowers or fruits, with the exception of Ocean. Red Flower doesn’t give the notes for this fragrance; instead, Ocean is simply described as “a vast scent that opens the lungs and cools the skin.” It seems to be dominated by an intense dose of eucalyptus, or some fragrant variety of laurel, with subtle notes of mint and something kelp-like below the cleansing, camphorous heart of the fragrance.

According to the Red Flower website, Ocean Body Wash (shown) and Moisturizing Lotion are both concocted from “organic flowers, bio-dynamic honey, and wild-crafted botanical extracts.” The Body Wash actually looks and feels like honey, and its ingredients list also includes spirulina (an algae rich in fatty acids and other nutrients). When I use the Body Wash in the shower (lots of lather!), or even just to wash my hands at the sink, I can feel Ocean’s essential oils clearing my head…

What the Nose Knows by Avery Gilbert ~ perfume books

Posted by Marcello on 16 August 2008 8 Comments

Avery Gilbert, What the Nose KnowsAvery Gilbert has a long track record in the field of smell psychology. His research papers have been published in renowned academic journals since the 1980s, and he has been a consultant to many large firms in the fragrance industry. What the Nose Knows is his first book, and deals with the psychology of odor perception. Piet Vroon and Rachel Herz have written very accessible books on this subject, but their work was primarily focused on the relation between olfaction, emotion and behavior. Gilbert's main mission is a different one: to challenge the assumption that the human nose is somehow inferior to that of other species. “Dogs have great noses,” he writes in the chapter on olfactory prodigies, “but it's time to stop the trash talk and give ourselves more credit” (p.63). His message is simple: there's nothing wrong with our nose, we're just not very good at using it.

Since the days of Charles Darwin (1809-1882) and Havelock Ellis (1859-1939), the notion that humans have a poor sense of smell has been more or less taken for granted. Scientists agreed that olfaction had lost its importance to humans from an evolutionary perspective, and that it was barely of use to modern man. In recent years, however, neurobiologists and sensory physiologists have gained better insights into the inner mechanisms of our nose…

Revlon Jean Nate ~ fragrance review

Posted by Angela on 15 August 2008 50 Comments

Revlon Jean Naté

I’ve found the antidote to a hot August night, and it’s Revlon Jean Naté. This is how it works: Go to the drugstore and find the bath supplies. Look on the bottom shelf for the bottles of Jean Naté After Bath Splash, and buy one. It’s the tall plastic bottle with the round, black cap. “Jean Naté” is written up the side in black script. There’s a good chance it will be on sale.

When you get it home, put the bottle of Jean Naté in the door of the refrigerator. That night before bed, when you’re cursing your lack of air conditioning, and the pets are splayed over the floor like an ad for the boneless cat and dog farm, and your honey is staying on the other side of the bed because it’s too darn hot, take a warm bath. It will cool you down right away…
