Quiksilver for Men, Etat Libre d’Orange Bendelirious ~ new fragrances

Quiksilver cologne for menSurf apparel and lifestyle brand Quiksilver will launch its debut fragrance for men, called simply Quiksilver, this coming July (their subsidiary for women, Roxy, has already launched Roxy and Roxy Love for women).

Famed French perfumer Jean-Paul Guerlain once said, "To imagine a scent is to imagine the woman who wears it." He probably didn't mean it quite as literally as today's perfumers are taking it. With the top end of the fragrance market booming, it's no surprise that luxury brands—titans like Guerlain, Cartier and Jean Patou, as well as smaller specialized houses—are investing in the rapid-growth niche sector of bespoke perfumery.

Fifi Award Winners 2008

The Fragrance Foundation of the United States has announced the winners of the 2008 Fifi Awards, known as the “Oscars of the fragrance industry”. The award ceremony was held this evening at the Park Avenue Armory in New York City; award presenters included Bernadette Peters and Zac Posen. This year's Hall of Fame Awards went to Vera Wang and Annick Goutal Eau d'Hadrien. And the winners are:

The Perfume We Aspire To

Chanel No 5 perfume

Marilyn Monroe famously said all she wore to bed was Chanel No. 5. That always puzzled me. No. 5 is elegant and restrained, so ladylike, and it doesn't have half the pulchritude Marilyn does. Marilyn might have done better with No. 5's lusty cousin, Guerlain Vega. While No. 5 stares coolly as a man walks out on her (how dare he!), Vega begs tearfully for him not to go, then laughs at him when he tells her he loves her. But it occurs to me now: maybe No. 5 wasn't really what Marilyn was. Maybe it was what she wanted to be.

How much of your perfume choices reflects what you aspire to, and how much reflects who you really are? I know I'd like to be a vintage Dior fragrance…
