What space smells like

Posted by Robin on 21 February 2008 23 Comments

Each time, when I repressed the airlock, opened the hatch and welcomed two tired workers inside, a peculiar odor tickled my olfactory senses. At first I couldn't quite place it. It must have come from the air ducts that re-pressed the compartment. Then I noticed that this smell was on their suit, helmet, gloves, and tools. It was more pronounced on fabrics than on metal or plastic surfaces. It is hard to describe this smell; it is definitely not the olfactory equivalent to describing the palette sensations of some new food as "tastes like chicken." The best description I can come up with is metallic; a rather pleasant sweet metallic sensation.

Perfumes are densely packed on shelves below and behind the counter at the front of the store, where they share space with gum and candy and razor refills, and on the counter itself, where they surround the store’s main cash register…

Spice wars: Frapin Caravelle Epicee & Biehl eo01

Posted by Robin on 20 February 2008 19 Comments

We’ve had a mild winter here for the most part, but the last week or so has been bitter-nasty cold. I’m keeping myself warm by road-testing two recently launched niche spice fragrances:

Frapin Caravelle Epicee perfume

First up, Caravelle Epicée by the French Cognac house Frapin. Caravelle Epicée starts with a veritable explosion of spice notes, and while I find it glorious, I can see someone less enthusiastic about spice being a bit overwhelmed…
