Memoire Liquide Bespoke Perfumery ~ fragrance review

Posted by Jessica on 8 September 2007 13 Comments

Memoire Liquide perfume bottles

Henri Bendel in New York now houses the second existing Memoire Liquide counter, following the original location at Fred Segal in Santa Monica, California. Memoire Liquide is the creation of Robin Coe Hutshing, the founder of beauty-mecca Studio at Fred Segal, and her sister Jennifer Coe Bakewell. The company is an updated interpretation of a traditional apothecary offering “bespoke,” or custom-made, fragrances, and its written statement invokes Proust’s famous madeleine as the classic motif of “the intertwining nature of scent and memory.” Just as memories are intrinsically personal, these fragrances may be mixed and matched to fit the wearer’s own history, tastes, and imagination…

Posted by Robin on 8 September 2007 7 Comments

I'm very pleased to announce that we'll be adding two new voices to Now Smell This in the coming weeks. Both of them are bloggers you might already know:

Lucy of Indieperfumes is going to be writing about home fragrances, scented body products and do-it-yourself fragrance projects. Look for her first article, on Annick Goutal's Petite Cherie candle, tomorrow.

Next month, Erin of Emergency Backpack will start a monthly feature called "Five Perfumes". Each month, expect a topical list of five perfumes for something or another. As Erin notes, "There's nothing more fun than agreeing with or fuming over a list - except making one yourself".

Usher She & Sean John Unforgivable Woman ~ battle of the celebrity fragrances

Posted by Robin on 7 September 2007 21 Comments

Sean John Unforgivable WomanUsher She perfume

Last week I sat down to try Usher She and Sean John Unforgivable Woman. She went on one arm; Unforgivable Woman on the other. Within an hour I’d forgotten which was which and had to put them on again, but pretty soon I forgot all over again. It isn’t that they smell exactly the same, but they feel the same, that is, it is pretty clear that they’re reaching for the same audience.

So, a face-off. First, the facts. Usher She is designated for “a woman of mystery and confidence”, and was created by perfumers Honorine Blanc and Richard Herpin. The notes: red currant, pink freesia, apple blossom, frangipani, apricot nectar, jasmine, passion rose, amber wood, musk, cashmere wood, vanilla orchid and incense. Sean John Unforgivable Woman is a “sensual, creamy floral” by perfumer David Apel, with notes of bergamot, orange, neroli, cassis, grapefruit, apple, cucumber, piña colada, orange flower, jasmine, violet, muguet, freesia, cyclamen, amber, tonka beans, coco de mer, vanilla tears, cedar, sandalwood, oak moss, patchouli, vetiver and iris.

Freshly applied: Usher She is juicy and fruity and sweet, with just a touch of tartness. It has a slightly creamy feel right from the outset. Unforgivable Woman is also fruity and juicy, but it is not nearly as sweet, and it has a nice warmth to it…
