5 Perfumes for: Creatures of the Night

Posted by Erin on 10 October 2007 25 Comments

Alexander McQueen Kingdom perfumeI am a night walker. Much to the dismay of family and friends, I have always loved tramping alone through the dark. Autumn has been my favorite season since I began school at four and few things have ever invigorated me like a solitary stroll on a gusty October night. Perfect fall days have a straightforward, blue-skied radiance about them that seems to call for something crisp and handsome — Leonard Pour Homme, CB I Hate Perfume Violet Empire, MDCI Invasion Barbare, and L'Artisan Timbuktu spring to mind. But what to wear after hours, when the wind sweeps up plastic bags and dandelion filaments to haunt the air, when echoes ring in the quiet and the singed smell of dried leaves weaves about you?

1. Ormonde Jayne Ormonde: In Angela Carter's “The Company of Wolves”, the Big Baddie is a handsome werewolf and Little Miss Hood cleverly seduces him, offering up her red cloak, her innocence and her humanity to save her skin. I bet this Red would favor the spices, green sheen and dark, velvety woods of Ormonde…

Liberty ~ shopping for perfume in London

Posted by Guest Shopper on 10 October 2007 — 0 Comments — Comments are closed

Libery London exteriorLiberty has to be the prettiest store in London. The first time you turn off Regent Street and see that mad Tudor frontage, it’s almost impossible not to laugh out loud. In the midst of all the stately Georgian architecture in this part of central London, Liberty looks like a joke played on the city by the Disney Corporation.

In some ways it is, except the joker wasn’t Walt but a chap called Arthur Lasenby Liberty, who had the store built in 1924. So, not Tudor at all! It was created using the timbers of two ships, the HMS Impregnable and the HMS Hindustan, and the length of the Great Marlborough Street frontage is apparently the same as that of the Hindustan.

Inside, the store is even more impressive. Arthur Liberty wanted to have his customers feel as if they were walking round their own homes (this tells you something about the kind of customers he had), so the store was arranged as small rooms round three galleried lightwells. The place gleams with carved panelling; it’s a bit like walking round a stately home where you’re actually allowed to pick up the exhibits…

Jo Malone White Jasmine & Mint ~ fragrance review

Posted by Robin on 9 October 2007 18 Comments

Jo Malone White Jasmine & Mint perfume

White Jasmine & Mint is the latest fragrance from UK niche line Jo Malone, and the second to launch since Jo Malone left the company. Said to be “inspired by a sun drenched morning in an English garden”, White Jasmine & Mint features notes of wild mint, peppermint, camomile, coriander, cardamom, bergamot, mace, cassis, “Jo Malone heirloom jasmine”, ylang ylang, orange flower, rose de mai, muguet, cedar, “Jo Malone musk”, mate absolut, vetiver, prune and guaiac wood.

If the long list of notes makes White Mint & Jasmine sound complicated or heavy, think again. This is a simple, summer-y jasmine tea fragrance, very fresh and clean and crisp. The herbs and spices, including the “unexpected twist of wild mint”, make quite a showing when the fragrance is sprayed on paper. On skin, they are prominent for only a very short time; blink, and you’ll miss any chance of identifying them separately. That is good news for those who find mint in fragrance uncomfortably reminiscent of chewing gum, but bad news for those (like me) who were hoping for something with a bit more of a kick to it…
