Calvin Klein will release CK One Summer, a limited edition fragrance, in March. The notes include grapefruit, mandarin, orange, watermelon, water mint, orange blossom, ginger, marigold, sun-bleached wood, vanilla, violet and guaiac wood. New books smell great. There’s something mysteriously seductive about that lovely scent of pencils and printed paper, lingering in the air of quiet bookstores. Books about perfume are not the most pleasant ones; for that matter, I’d much rather bury my nose in a leafy foreign dictionary, or in some classic novel with a heavy, cardboard cover. There is, however, one notable exception: a scratch-n-sniff book entitled Sur les routes de l’encens (“on the trail of incense”), written by Annick Le Guérer and produced in collaboration with Dominique Ropion and IFF. The book is a fragrant journey through time, revolving around a series of ancient expeditions: it takes us back to the banks of the river Nile, the Arab and Persian worlds, classical times in Rome, Marco Polo’s travels to China, and the East Indies spice trade in the 17th century…
Comme des Garçons released Comme des Garçons 2 Man in 2004. It was developed by perfumer Mark Buxton. If you find it at all helpful, the tag line is “a worker, a man who loves his work” (that’s two strikes for me), and the notes are incense, white smoke, saffron flowers, nutmeg, kumquat, mint, vetiver, mahogany and leather.
Comme des Garçons 2 Man, like the other Mark Buxton fragrances discussed over the past week (Comme des Garçons Eau de Parfum, Comme des Garçons White, Comme des Garçons 2) explores themes of spices, woods and incense. The top notes have a buzz of citrus, similar to the opening of “regular” 2 but perhaps not quite so metallic or high-pitched. There is the tiniest whiff of the inky stuff, then we get the familiar spices…
