In lieu of a (celebrity fragrance) prize…

Posted by Robin on 5 December 2007 5 Comments

As you may remember, Rosewater won our pre-contest to name our upcoming contest to reward "creative fragrance writing": The Prix Eau Faux. Or, better yet, Le Prix Eau Faux. Shockingly enough, Rosewater is not interested in claiming her prize, which was described as "a 99.9% full bottle of the celebrity fragrance with the most ironic tag line of 2007". So instead, she's asked me to plug her favorite charity:

I'd like to tell you about ableplay.org, a unique web site that helps parents and professionals select toys appropriate for kids with disabilities. While providing a resource for parents and professionals, Ableplay also creates revenue for the national nonprofit Lekotek, which uses play to help children with disabilities grow physically, mentally, and spiritually. This is the "real" thing--nothing faux about it.

Thanks Rosewater!

Holiday fragrance gifts 2007, part 6

Posted by Robin on 5 December 2007 6 Comments

Still finishing up your holiday shopping? So am I, much to my dismay. Here are a few more fragrance gift ideas, and if you missed them, see Holiday fragrance gifts 2007, part 1, part 2, part 3, part 4 and part 5.

Caldrea Ginger Pomelo gift setThis Ginger Pomelo set from Caldrea was too cute to pass up, but admittedly, you'd better be darned sure the recipient wouldn't mind receiving cleaning products as a gift. It'd be a perfect housewarming present though! Includes Ginger Pomelo All-Purpose Cleanser, Countertop Cleanser, Powdered Scrub, Dish Soap Liquid, Hand Balm, Lint-Free Cleaning Cloths, and a Ginger Pomelo Bucket, $75 at Caldrea…

Jean Couturier Coriandre ~ a sort of fragrance review and lament

Jean Couturier Coriandre perfume

Jean Couturier’s Coriandre was my first true signature fragrance. I started wearing it in junior high school (middle school, to many of you) and I stuck to it for rather a long time, although at some point I started wearing Chanel Cristalle on the side, and later still I switched over to Christian Dior’s Diorissimo. Nobody else I knew wore Coriandre, which made it the perfect signature scent, and to my then-very-young self, it seemed almost extraordinarily sophisticated.

Coriandre launched in 1973, just a year before Cristalle. Susan Irvine’s Perfume Guide lists the notes as coriander, angelica, orange blossom, aldehydes, rose, geranium, jasmine, orris, lily, ylang ylang, patchouli, oakmoss, vetiver, sandalwood, civet and musk; and Irvine describes it as a fragrance “For a red-headed Raymond Chandler heroine. Or an anchorite”. I am neither of those things now, and was arguably less so back in junior high, but I simply adored Coriandre…

Shame is not sexy…

No big perfume news today (imagine that!) so for anyone desperate to waste time at work, here is the commercial for Alan Cumming's Cumming: The Fragrance ("a scent that is all about Sex, Scotch, Cigars and Scotland"). The fragrance itself is just great, and the commercial gets my vote for the funniest celebrity fragrance ad ever.
