The Perfumed Court is open for business

The Perfumed CourtIt was a sad day for perfumistas when Ebay decided to forbid the sale of decanted perfume. While a number of former Ebay sellers have since struck out on their own, The Perfumed Court, which opened for business yesterday, is easily the best effort I've seen so far. Four former Ebay sellers (Patty of Perfume Posse/Fragrant Fripperies, Dragonfly00, Lisalaw/Fleur de Lisa and Fishbone96) have combined their holdings into one easy to navigate (far easier than Ebay ever was) store.

The selection leans heavily towards the luxury/niche market…

Comme des Garcons Play fragrance

I’m not good at making “best of” lists. As soon as I put one thing on a list, I remember something else I should have included, and narrowing down is not an easy task (I’ve been working on a post called “100 Fragrances Every Perfumista Should Try” for over six months now). But Comme des Garçons would surely make a list of my favorite perfume houses, and when they release something new, I want to smell it.

Play, their latest release, looked promising. The concept for the Play line of clothing, introduced in 2003, is supposed to be “design by not designing”, a good fit with the subversive ethos of the brand, and the logo on the Play fragrance bottle, designed by Filip Pagowski, is appropriately simple but fun.

The Play fragrance itself was developed by perfumer Aurelien Guichard, another good sign. The notes — bitter orange, black pepper, lime, saffron, thyme, sage, sea notes, oak moss, patchouli and musk — didn’t sound particularly unusual (or playful), but that doesn’t mean much…

Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab has launched the Stardust series:

Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab (BPAL) has released a series of 5 fragrances inspired by “Stardust,” the extraordinary, haunting fairy tale by renowned author Neil Gaiman. Scents such as “Fairy Market” and “The Witch Queen” are based on the characters, locations, ideas and dreams found within the pages of the beloved tale. “Stardust,” the motion picture based on Mr. Gaiman's story, was directed by Matthew Vaughn and features Claire Danes, Michelle Pfeiffer, Robert DeNiro, and Charlie Cox. It is being released in the US on August 10th…
