Fortnum & Mason ~ shopping for perfume in London

Posted by Guest Shopper on 30 November 2007 — 0 Comments — Comments are closed

Fortnum & Mason, London, exteriorSay the words ‘Fortnum & Mason’, and I defy you not to get a mental image of food hampers packed with foie gras. Fortnums has become pretty much synonymous with the provision of superior groceries since its founding at the beginning of the 18th Century. What’s less well known is that it sells lots of other luxury goods, including high-end perfumes.

From the outside, Fortnum & Mason is so fairy-taleish, with its pale blue portico and its musical clock, it looks more like something knocked up for a film set than a real store. I’d place it just below Liberty in the spontaneous giggle league…

Paris Hilton Can Can ~ fragrance review, and a celebrity fragrance poll

Posted by Robin on 29 November 2007 62 Comments

Can Can Paris Hilton perfumeCan Can Paris Hilton perfume

Can Can Paris Hilton is the fourth entry for women from Paris Hilton, who reportedly made the Guinness World Records this year as the world’s most overrated celebrity. Despite that and all else (e.g., her recent jail stint and other controversies) her fragrances have apparently continued to sell like gangbusters, bringing in some $75 million a year.1

Can Can is supposed to be an “elegant but fun” fragrance, inspired by the Can-Can dancers of the Moulin Rouge cabaret. It was developed by perfumer Jean-Claude Delville. Like Paris’s earlier efforts, it has lots of fruits & flowers, but Can Can is meant to take cues from sexier oriental fragrances (the notes: clementine flower, cassis, nectarine, wild orchid, orange blossom, musk, amber and woods). You won’t notice from the opening, which is massively sweet fruits over vanilla cake, and invites comparison to Britney Spears Fantasy. Once it settles though, it is warmer and less fruity (and considerably less sweet), and while it never gets dark or sultry, I guess you could say that it flirts with the oriental category…

Announcing the first annual Prix Eau Faux

Posted by Robin on 29 November 2007 18 Comments

Kevin has spoken (ok, I chimed in) and the name of our upcoming fake fragrance ad copy contest (if you missed the initial contest post, see here) is Prix Eau Faux, which seemed like an appropriate blend of ludicrous, pretentious and vaguely plausible — the very qualities the contest is all about. It also sounds silly if you say it out loud.

Thank you to everyone who entered the pre-contest contest! Rosewater, we tweaked your entry but you're still the winner. To claim your prize (or more accurately, "prize"), send your details to nowsmellthis at comcast dot net.

We'll post the details of the "real" contest some time in the next couple weeks, and will probably be taking entries throughout January.
