Perfume in the news

Posted by Robin on 27 August 2007 6 Comments

One day Pucci mentioned that she loved the smell of a place in Turkey where the coast fell into the sea and the trees almost had their roots in the seawater, a mix of wood, sea breeze and fresh air, so Demachy specified patchouli and vetiver for the woody signature and certain synthetic molecules for the scent of the ocean. He kept its chypre heritage but twisted it in a modern way, finally adding galbanum to the top of the scent’s structure to make it less “tender.”

— Columnist Chandler Burr traces the history of Pucci's Vivara fragrance in Back in Print in yesterday's New York Times.

Fashion designers are ramping up their effort to capture the teen market with a slate of new perfumes. Marc Jacobs, whose new Daisy perfume has ruby-red-grapefruit notes, launched a social-networking site where fans can create a Daisy profile in a virtual flower field. Young Sexy Lovely perfume from Yves Saint Laurent comes in a pink-hued bottle with a heart-shaped indentation. While most teens can't afford $1,200 designer handbags and evening dresses, the thinking goes, they can afford a fancy eau de toilette, which typically costs less than $60.

— Why School Stinks This Year, in last week's Wall Street Journal, looks at new efforts to market fragrances to teens, and why some schools would rather teens just take a good shower.

How did I miss the Gucci article? Shoot. Will go back and look. Was it in the fashion supplement? Also, did you see the photo of Ines de la Fressange? She looks amazing. I envy anyone with bone structure.
Aha — a chypre with the addition of galbanum as a topnote to make it less “tender”! No wonder I thought I'd die. I bet it's good, though.
Also, I do want MJ Daisy, even though a) I haven't seen/smelled it; b) I'm 20 (30?) years over the demographic. Just thinking about wearing something called Daisy makes me smile.

Yes, in the T Style magazine. Where is the picture of IdlF? Missed that — only reading online.

Didn't love MJ Daisy myself, but haven't yet put on skin. Bottle is cute though!

What a great story! Not that many perfumers have a life story like Pucci's, I'd imagine (Mussolini, torture, Capri pants…).

I found the Pucci article, not sure how I missed that one.

There's just a single pic of Ines, a throwaway shot. I think she's modeling something. She must be in her 50s. Wow.

Also, I think in there somewhere is La Deneuve selling something. Louis Vuitton luggage? She's beautiful, but she's had a lot done. Doesn't look quite herself.

Unless the juice is certifiably awful I'll probably buy Daisy if the bottle is that cute in person, I searched for a pic.

I'll have to see if I can get a real paper copy.

Didn't find Daisy awful at all, just not wonderful.

Someone needs to do a nice biographical dictionary of fashion designers, no? Or perhaps there already is one and I don't know about it.
