The latest smell research: identifying the fragrance of a rose

Posted by Robin on 19 June 2006 4 Comments

Scientists at Duke University Medical Center have unlocked another piece of the puzzle about how we identify particular odors:

In studies in mice, the researchers found that nerve cells in the brain's olfactory bulb -- the first stop for information from the nose -- do not perceive complex scent mixtures as single objects, such as the fragrance of a blooming rose. Instead, these nerve cells, or neurons, detect the host of chemical compounds that comprise a rose's perfume. Smarter sections of the brain's olfactory system then categorize and combine these compounds into a recognizable scent.

Home fragrance: Shoyeido Baika-ju (Plum Blossoms) Incense Sticks

Posted by Kevin on 18 June 2006 9 Comments

Plum tree blossomsEvery spring I visit an “old friend” at Kubota Garden in Seattle: a stately Chinese plum tree. If I sit against its large trunk, I’m completely hidden from view by its flower-covered branches that touch the ground. The scent of the thousands of white plum blossoms changes over time. The tiny round unopened buds smell fresh and leafy with a whiff of rain. At their peak, the flowers diffuse a strange and lavish perfume with hints of honey, clove, old-fashioned bubblegum, wood smoke and masa. As the flowers fade and begin to fall, their last breath smells of delicate incense.

Viktor & Rolf talk about their admiration for Rufus Wainwright in men.style.com. Wainwright has written a song for their new fragrance, Antidote.

Santa Maria Novella Eva fragrance review

Santa Maria Novella Eva fragrance

Don’t let the retro packaging fool you: Eva is one of the newer fragrance releases from Santa Maria Novella. It came out in 2002, and has notes of citrus fruits, Italian bergamot, black pepper and vetiver.

There is nothing much to Eva; it is a simple unisex rendition of a traditional citrus-based cologne water, but very nicely done. It starts with crisp, dry citrus, and quickly takes on a nicely dusty pepper note, mingled, I would guess, with some other spice notes that I can’t identify. It settles into pale dry woods underscored with earthy (but not overly so) vetiver.

That is the whole story, but it is probably just the right amount of a story for a hot summer day…
